It points out a larger problem; neither he nor any of our Linebackers are good and coverage. Not even in our zone scheme.
Mayo making a great interception points out a coverage problem?
Please explain.......
1st of career. Not that I expect a lot of picks from LB's, but he does not get deflections either and is consistently beat in coverage. He is a great run stopping linebacker, not so good in coverage.
None of that, regardless of truth, was pointed out by Mayo's interception.
Also, Patrick Willis has a total of 5 interceptions in his career, has had 2 seasons without an interception and has 2 seasons with just 1 interception. The notion that your ILB is expected to be an interception machine is fallacious.
The fact that it was his first career pick shows that he hasn't had any others. The play it self was very good, great catch. I never said he is supposed to pick a lot of balls, but I do expect him to defend a lot of balls and make tackles on third downs in front of the first down markers. He does not do that enough IMO. As far as Patrick Willis, he is the best in the game and has 80% more interceptions then Mayo. He makes plays in front of the sticks and consistantly defends passes, making them more difficult for the QB. Mayo is simply not great in coverage. I don't know why that is off base.
You took the opportunity of the interception to go on a barely tangential attack against the player. That's fine, but don't pretend that the interception somehow pointed out a coverage problem, because it didn't.
And that percentage argument is terrible, as I'm sure you realized the moment you hit "submit reply".
As I said, the interception was a very good play. The fact that it was the first of his 4 year career is evidence that coverage is part of his game that needs to be improved. No need to get nasty big guy.
Nothing I said was nasty, and the fact of the number of INTs means nothing. Again, Willis, currently considered the best ILB in the game, has only 5 career INTs.
You wanted to bash Mayo, and that's fine for you. You just chose a poor foundation for the bashing. The INT argument is garbage.

Who on earth made Patrick the be all end all of linebackers?
Gee, I don't know. Maybe the fact that he's the best linebacker in the league?
