Yes, but plays like that are called passes pretty much every game in the NFL. I don't know why the refs were ticky tacky with that, but I guess it's a TD either way, so it doesn't matter much.
Not the refs, the statisticians.
I rather doubt Gates or Vernon Davis had rushing or return touchdowns in their seasons. We can reasonably assume that Gronkowski now already owns the record for the most TD's in a season by a TE in league history -- 12 games into his second season.
No NFL tight end ha[d] ever scored 14 touchdowns in a season by any measure, so Gronkowski's mark stands alone in some right. Regardless of whether or not Gronkowski breaks the record later this season, the big tight end said he wasn't chasing history.
