Brady had some high praise for him in his interview this morning:

"Ti, he was on our team late in the preseason, really picked up our offense very quickly, and he's just always been on the radar for our scouting department,” Brady said. "We had an opportunity to bring him back and we did. He's proven that he's very dependable in practice. I was bummed for him last night, because I know how badly he wanted to make that play. But he'll have other opportunities. He's a good young player that really works hard. He deserves an opportunity, and he got one yesterday. I know he wishes that we would have executed better. But that's part of football."

he played 19snaps yesterday. that drop was HORRENDOUS but hes gotta be showing something in practice for him to warrant so many snaps after basically just being signed(thats more than Ocho has been getting). maybe he was surprised that Brady actually targeted him

He shows he's the only #3 WR with speed who can walk without a limp?

Chris

If he sticks around, it will say a lot about our offensive playbook and that is only a select few can get it. We might get the most talented WR here but he might not fit and will be washed out unfortunately there are not many samples to go by.

It has to be the hair. Brady loves that hair.

He looks the part ... I trust their judgement and certainly the next few weeks is a good time to get him some throws.

Him and Price are both 24 years old, one's in his 3rd year, one's in his 2nd.

If Underwood is better, can improve, and help the team now and in the future more than Price so be it.

Underwood is very impressive for producing the most sound uttered by Patriot fans watching the game on TV.

looked like he ran a great rout, to bad for the drop.

6'1 185lb, combine was 4.40 in the 40 and young at 24, if he's picking up the offence faster than ocho and price that's a good start.

he looks slim, a burner, good for the long to intermediate ball but i'm sure he'll go where ever BB tells em. Hopefully TB can start hitting these no names and give us some surprise weapons down the stretch.

eraserhead would be a nice addition to this motley crew.

would love to finally get some resemblence of a deep threat.

Taylor "how were you drafted in the 3rd round" Price

Count me in as intrigued. Fairly big target and a long strider who apparently knows how to think (the drop aside). Plus he has Gumby hair. What's not to like?

That being said, none of us should be getting attached to him just yet.

Most of the time drops are physical mistakes. Bill forgives those as long as you correct them and don't make an absolute habit of them. It's like a DB who is all around the ball but just can't catch it. He will send that guy home as he did with Asante and Arrington in the off season and tell them to work on catching damn balls. Mental mistakes (like not making the right adjustment or running a wrong or sloppy route or guessing wrong/freelancing) are the kind he is not inclined to forgive when he sees them being made repeatedly. The QB equivalent would be bad throws happen to everyone here and there for a variety of reasons, bad decisions shouldn't.

If Underwood gets the offense that is 85% of the battle here. They can work on his hands and catching the damn ball and unless he makes such a habit of dropping them that they decide he can't be conditioned not to... Same way guys like Reche and Gaffney made it here when better talent's couldn't.

Sucks that he didn't catch that pass yesterday cuz I really like this guy. He's no Taylor Price though thats for sure.

The key part of Brady's quote "really picked up our offense very quickly" looks pretty clear to me that Brady could not say that players like Price and Ocho have picked up the offense pretty quicky

His draft profile from 2009 sounds pretty solid:

Pick Analysis:
Underwood is one of the fastest guys in the draft and is a relatively inexperienced player who has a lot of upside. He has a chance to be ready after a year of seasoning on the practice squad. He was in Kenny Britt's shadow at Rutgers, but he has the raw skills to be really good.

Overview:
Underwood is an unheralded athlete who had to take a back seat to the team's emphasis for a strong running game earlier in his career. But given an opportunity as a junior, he went on to etch his name into the school record books. The cat-quick moves, long wing-span, outstanding leaping ability and sure hands allowed the talented receiver to become just the second player in school history to gain more than 1,000 yards receiving in a season, joining Tres Moses (1,056 yards in 2004).

His stellar performances on the field forced the opposition to place constant double coverage on him the second part of 2007. That allowed fellow receiver Kenny Britt to match Underwood's exploits, as he tallied 1,232 yards receiving last season. They became just the 26th tandem in NCAA history and the first in Big East Conference annals to gain more than 1,000 yards receiving in the same season.

At Notre Dame High School, Underwood earned All-County honors as a sophomore wide receiver and was again recognized as an All-County quarterback during his junior campaign. He returned to the receiving unit as a senior, catching 17 passes for more than 400 yards with five touchdowns in the team's first two games before an injury in the third contest would sideline him for the rest of 2004.

In 2003, Underwood completed 70 of 103 passes for 1,144 yards and 16 touchdowns, as he also rushed for two touchdowns and caught 10 passes for 212 yards with five scores. During his sophomore campaign, he made 35 catches for 606 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Underwood was the starting point guard on the school's basketball team as a sophomore and junior, leading the team in scoring in 2003-2004. He also competed in hurdles and triple jump for outdoor track team, where he set the state record for sophomores and juniors in the triple jump.

During his first season at Rutgers, Underwood was a jack of all-trades. He saw action at both receiving positions, in addition to lining up as a quarterback to take direct snaps in shotgun formation. He only threw the ball once, resulting in an interception, but gained 63 yards on the ground, as five of 16 carries resulted in first downs. He snatched four passes for 47 yards and fielded two punts for no gain, fumbling one in the Insight Bowl. He led the Big East Conference and ranked 19th in the nation, averaging 27.1 yards on 11 kickoff returns for 298 yards in 2004.

Underwood changed from jersey No. 10 that he wore as a freshman to jersey No. 7 for his 2005 campaign. He took over flanker duties in the team's fifth game when Shawn Tucker suffered a season-ending ankle injury. He finished fourth on the team with 23 receptions for 290 yards (12.6 avg), leading the Scarlet Knights with four touchdowns. A broken bone in his right foot in the regular-season finale would sideline him for the Insight Bowl.

Eighteen of his catches produced first downs, converting five third-down plays in the process. In addition to his four touchdowns, he had key catches that set up five other touchdown drives and three series that ended with field goals. He also returned one kickoff for 11 yards and recorded three tackles (2 solos), including one for a 2-yard loss.

As a junior, Underwood earned All-American third-team accolades and was a consensus All-Big East Conference choice. He led the team with 65 receptions, the third-best season total in school history, as his 1,100 yards rank second on the Rutgers' annual record chart. He had seven touchdown grabs, along with 55 first downs, converting 20 third-down catches. Forty-two of his grabs were for 10 yards or longer, including 18 for at least 20 yards. He had key catches to set up 13 other touchdowns for the Scarlet Knights and nine others that led to team field goals. He also registered seven touchdown-resulting blocks.

Underwood entered the 2008 season as one of the premier pass catchers in college football. A member of the AFCA "Good Works" team for his outstanding work in the community, he was also named to the Maxwell Award Watch List. He garnered All-American second-team preseason recognition, in addition to being a unanimous All-Big East preseason pick. He ranked second on the team with 40 receptions for 494 yards (12.4 avg) and five touchdowns in 13 games. He also gained 337 yards on 18 kickoff returns (18.7 avg) and assisted on two tackles, in addition to returning a blocked punt 70 yards.

While I suspect he's more likely to be cut than catch a pass next week, his combine numbers were generally better than Price's with a few exceptions :

Price:
Height: 6003
Weight: 204
40 Yrd Dash: 4.40
20 Yrd Dash: 2.52
10 Yrd Dash: 1.50
225 Lb. Bench Reps: 16
Vertical Jump: 37
Broad Jump: 09'06"
20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.34
3-Cone Drill: 6.82

Underwood
Height: 6011
Weight: 184
40 Yrd Dash: 4.31
20 Yrd Dash: 2.53
10 Yrd Dash: 1.47
225 Lb. Bench Reps: 07
Vertical Jump: 41 1/2
Broad Jump: 10'09"
20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.11
3-Cone Drill: 6.62

He's also got ST experience as a Gunner in college.

Clearly our young WR are in flux, I hope we keep Underwood and Price through next year's camp and see if one can step up.

exactly, and I think thats what you need to excel in this offense more than raw talent....thats why Deion Branch is an 800-900yd receiver on the Pats and a 400Yd receiver everywhere else...he gets the system.

im not gonna get too attached yet, because who knows if he sticks on the team...but, hes the first WR brady has really said he "really picked up our offense quickly"

I don't buy this "talent" can't produce in our system, because Randy Moss is not smart, yet he was the most successful WR in our franchise history.

That is a joke, right?

Randy Moss may be one of the smartest players to ever live...
