SABAN SAID GOODBYE TO PLAYERS BY E-MAIL

Less than two weeks after former Fins coach Nick Saban said that he never browses the Internet or sends e-mails, Saban apparently has taken a crash course in electronic communications.

Because he informed most of his players of his departure from the team . . . by sending them an e-mail.

"Thanks for your efforts and support," Saban wrote. "I'll help you in any way I can in the future. I thought the damage done relative to me talking to the Alabama people made it impossible for me to come back as the Dolphins coach. I would love to talk to you. Please feel free to call me."

Okay, so Saban left because of the damage that occurred because he decided to speak to the "Alabama people" after declaring that he wouldn't be the Alabama coach?

(Nick, good luck looking a recruit and/or his parents in the eye and persuading them that: (1) you'll be the coach at Alabama for their son's full career there; (2) their son will be a starter; and/or (3) their son will be better prepared to play in the NFL if he plays for Alabama.)

We obtained a copy of the e-mail, sent on January 3 at 4:30 p.m., from one of the recipients. The list of addressees included Andre Goodman, Anthony Alabi, Bennie Anderson, Channing Crowder, Cleo Lemon, Damion McIntosh, Dan Stevenson, Dan Wilkinson, Darian Barnes, Daunte Culpepper, David Bowens, Derek Hagan, Derrick Pope, Donnie Jones, Donnie Spragan, Eddie Jackson, Eric Kimble, Fred Evans, Fred Gibson, Jack Hunt, Jason Allen, Jason Rader, Jason Willis, Jeff Zgonina, Jeno James, Jim Maxwell, Joe Toledo, Joey Harrington, John Denney, Keith Adams, Keith Traylor, Kendyl Jacox, Kyle Eckel, Lee Gray, L.J. Shelton, Marcus Vick, Marty Booker, Matt Roth, Michael Lehan, Norman Lejeune, Patrick Cobbs, P.K. If this is his only means of a goodbye, then he is truly classless. He will be a huge success at Alabama. He's a great college coach and recruiter, and will have a big time football school and conference to recruit. None of what he did to the Miami Dolphins is going to turn blue chips away from Alabama unless they are a rabid Dolphin fan living in Miami.

Most likely they were the captains.

Herm Edwards disappeared from NY without saying anything. I bet this is very typical other than when coaches leave when the team is still together before dispersing for the offseason.

When BP left the Pats, did he go around and do warm and fuzzy with all the players, doubt it... I do not know if there is any graceful way to leave a team, unless it is well advertised or planned. Most guys are in a rush and the players are spread out all over the country.

There was no reason on earth for him not to say his goodbyes to his players in person after the last game of the season, instead of mainaining his ridiculous drama queen charade for another 48 hours. They had the plane ride back to Florida from Indy, unless he traveled on his own on some 'Bama alums gulfstream, and he had the day after when most players have to come in to be cleared medically for the off season and guys clean out their lockers. Probably half that team lives in So. Florida year round - half of all football players live there in the off season for crying out loud.

The latest has the Phins interviewing Chan Gailey, Georgia Tech HC (former Phins OC), Jim Mora Jr., Vikings DC Mike Tomlin. Also plan on interviewing SD OC Cam Cameron, the Bears OC and DC, Ron Turner and Ron Rivera, and the Steelers OC Ken Whisenhunt. Funny how none of them concern me as much as Saban did.

I don't think so. I was listening to Chris Landry who worked with Saban in Cleveland in the Belichick years and Chris said he talked to Saban the night before he accepted the job and that Saban really didn't know. Landry told Saban that he should stay and fulfill his commitment as opposed to walking away from it. Obviously that advice went unheeded but to say that Saban knew - I believe that to be flat out false.

The thing that angers me most as a Dolphins' fan is how he completely had everyone fooled. He based himselfe on integrety, loyality and committment. He obviously showed that he cannot live up to any of those and the man is a complete coward. I'm glad to see him go.

Admittedly I'm an unabashed SabanFan But he just realized he made a mistake. I imagine he feels bad about bailing. But we all only get one life. He's in his mid 50s, he likes being a college coach better. Better to do what you love because you want to than to do something you don't love because someone else wants you to.

True. If he was going to bother saying good-bye at all,the final game was the time to do it. That email thing looks more like an afterthought,in which case he probably would look better doing nothing rather than an email lol. Although people email everything,even wedding invitations,so who knows. I think it's sorta funny-it may set a precedent.
