Especially in the first half..

Gain 10 + yards before 4th down.

Is this a multiple choice? I take, "Make more first downs." Otherwise, "Score more TD's on First or Second Down" or "More Special Teams TD's" or "All of the above" come to mind. :singing:

In other words, I think the previous poster and I are politely suggesting to the person who started this thread that if you start a thread like this, you should offer your own suggestions as to why (a) you view this as an issue (perhaps, OMG, with statistics vs. other teams) and (b) how you see the causes thereof and possible remedies therefor.

No huddle spread, hurry up with Woodhead from the beginning of the game. Use the pass to set up the run. Bring BJGE to run after we get the defense on it's heels.

You could also turn it over before 3rd down. Oh, wait. We're not talking about the Colts.

Better execution and quicker adjustments out of the gate. It's all about building rhythm on offense. We tend to be a reactive team early on, waiting to see what the other guy has planned. Sort of probing for potential weakness. Ditto on defense although that seems to be changing a little of late. Being proactive and making them grapple with what we are presenting might be a better approach, less tentative, but you have to have consistent execution to pull that off. And as a unit the offense isn't there yet. All it takes is one bad route, one missed block, one stupid penalty, one dropped ball...and it's back to the drawing board.

It really comes down to consistent focus and execution and intensity on the part of all 11 players.

Stop the cliche run up the middle for 2yards on 1st down.

Sounds fine, but

What has changed between the great 2010 offense who was great out of the gate and had troubles in the 4th quarter and the great 2011 offense who can't get out of the gate, but plays very well indeed at the end?

same way most teams do, pick up yards on first down and stay away from 3rd and longs in general.

By realizing that Shane Vereen is the most talented and versatile RB on the roster!

We could try to keep our voices down when they're on the field.

And ask opposing teams' fans to do the same.

Seriously though, if we come up with enough good ideas to eliminate 3 and outs, we can compile them into a nice .PDF to send to Bill. I'm sure he will appreciate it!

Especially in the first half..

You'd prefer them in the second half?

Perhaps we could prohibit teams watching film and game planning for us, that would help.

It's really just symptomatic of the same problem, inconsistent effort and focus. the 2010 team came out intent and focused and lost it after building early leads. The 2011 team comes out tentative and not focusing or executing consistently or with intensity and then wakes up and gets serious. Sometimes a hair too late. The key as always is to find a way through coaching to get them to play with intensity and focus for 60 minutes.

I think some weeks the kids are a little full of themselves out of the gate and other weeks the vets are a little complacent expecting one thing and facing another...

If you watch GB the thing they may have going for them this season that is pretty unusual for a defending champ is that half of their team has experienced what it takes to win against the odds and the other half that wasn't there due to injury and is hungrier than normal to actually experience that kind of season for themselves.

We have a small handful of players who have experienced a championship season. We have quite a few players who have experienced adversity albeit fewer who have overcome it. And we have a bunch of youngsters who are still adjusting to being in the NF freakin L... Getting them all on the same page consistently presents a real challenge to the coaching staff and team leaders (who are derived from that same mixed bag of relative experience).

I wouldn't consider the 2010 to have had problems. Perhaps you meant the 2009 which was a completely different story. Now those guys FOUND ways to lose in the second half.

.....and to the original poster.....would you prefer they punt on third down?

The kid's got a very big head and a big temper, and is one the very best players in the league. If coaching can deal with murderers and wife-beaters, it can deal with Suh. For me, the issue is almost 100% coaching.

With regard to the league, I understand how much folks here hate the commissioner. That is their privilege. Under Rozelle, I suspect this likely would have been a non-incident. Under the current administration, player safety is much, much more important.

I suspect that Suh is looking at a 1-3 game suspension. He is a repeat offender. His/this style of "play" is not acceptable in the current nfl. He shows no remorse for his actions, other than his getting caught and affecting his team.

The league will continue to take stands to try to protect safety, sometimes going too far. A player who thinks this is OK behavior will learn otherwise (coaching should do this) or face a continued flow of flags, ejections and suspensions.

Did you forget what thread you were posting in?

Throw a 60 yard bomb to.........? nevermind
