How are we going to win a game? LOL. I watched every pre-season game that year and Tom Brady looked great. Granted it was pre-season. But, he moved the team with that short passing game. I didn't think we'd be any better than 6-8 wins. But, holy over-reaction to Drew getting hurt. Rule number one for journalists should be to never speak in absolutes. They'll never win. He'll never make it. No chance of that happening. Makes you look kinda foolish.

Wow, great find!

Classic.. what ever happened to Dr. Z???

This is sad. Drew Bledsoe took a big hit and is out indefinitely. Honestly, I don't know what weapons they have with which to win a game.

Zimmerman suffered a stroke on November 22, 2008, which, so far, has left him unable to walk or to communicate.[1] According to fellow SI writer Peter King's MMQB column, Zimmerman has also recently suffered two other strokes and is undergoing rehab in a New Jersey facility, at this time unable to speak and with right-sided hemiparesis.

Just enough weapons to win the game actually.

Always a fan of Dr. Z, I remember this ranking the week after Bledsoe went down. Amazing turn of events indeed.

Regards,
Chris

OK, Patriots coach Bill Belichick always has had a good read on Peyton Manning, but what happened in Foxboro was ridiculous. The game films will be passed around on the X-rated circuit. Strictly adult entertainment.

His write up the following week is classic for the Colts.

If someone would have asked me last week, "Name 10 possible ways in which the Patriots could upset the Colts," I wouldn't have included running the ball as one of them. I mean the idea would have been just too farfetched. But my No. 1 probably would have been "Play with more emotion," and I guess that was a big part of it.

Yes, as much as we like to laugh at those nay-sayers for doubting the Patriots that year, I think we can all pretty agree that we shared similar thoughts going into Week 3 of 2001.

Really for predicting an 0-2 team that just lost its pro-bowl QB was going nowhere? Nobody was picking the Pats to win the superbowl after the Jets game, including BB.

His superbowl article was a bit different.

Dr. Z for the eventual win;

"Maybe this was a magic moment that won't be repeated by this team. Perhaps it is the start of something lasting. Knowing Belichick and the level at which his team performed on Sunday, I lean toward the latter."

Best wishes for a healthy recovery.

Two weeks later:

Tom Brady? What's that you say, Tom Brady? A quarterback controversy, while Drew Bledsoe is mending? Too silly to even mention, ridiculous I say. What's the name again? Right, Tom Brady.

Week after that:

The new hero is David Patten, whose name isn't even spelled right. They're doing it with rejects, but they've beaten the Colts twice, so let's give 'em a little respect.

Next week:

Overwhelmed by his own boldness, Tom Brady threw four picks in the fourth quarter and blew a hard-earned lead. I know a method of settling him down. It's called Drew Bledsoe.

Next:

Wow, is Tom Brady ever making things tough for Bill Belichick and his staff. How do they bench one of the hottest young QBs in the league?

Next:

It's a lively little band of cutthroats that Bill Belichick has fashioned for himself up there in Foxboro, and now they'll be called upon to implement what could be one of the strategic masterpieces of his career. If, somehow, he can come up with a defense that can topple the mighty Rams, future von Clausewitzes of the gridiron will be studying it for the next millennium.

Next

In their Sunday nighter against the Rams their defense was like a sturdy pitcher, going on short rest and getting people out for five innings. Then uh oh, blam blam, blam, the crack of the bat was heard. Nevertheless, I salute the effort, and the way Bill Belichick is getting the most out of his skimpy material, which all translates into no drop at all in the rankings.

Next

It is late September in Foxboro. The Patriots are 0-2. Their quarterback is out. Their long-ball wideout is serving a suspension. All along the Mass Pike there are homemade signs reading, "Pats Tickets for Sale." Time fries. Drew Bledsoe can't get back into the lineup. Terry Glenn? Who's he? Facing the team is a trip to New York and a Jets contest that ranks as one of the truly big ones in recent Patriots' memory. Win that and, gosh, the playoffs beckon. Yes, I foresee an upset, unless, of course, the Jets are taking this one as seriously as New England is, and I don't think they are.

Next

Don't get me wrong, I really like the Patriots. Heck, I picked them to win their last two, and you always have a soft spot for teams that come through for you. I'd like to raise them higher, but they have now split with the Jets, not dominated them, and Miami beat them big, and Baltimore has done more on the record. You get the picture. No nasty e-mails, please.

No nasty email, LOLOL, the disrespect card.

Next:

I sure would have liked to have been in Bill Belichick's team meeting when he explained why Terry Glenn was going to be on the field last Sunday (four catches, 67 yards). I mean, the guy just about admitted he was faking an injury, and walked off the practice field, and humiliated the coach on numerous occasions, and, worst of all, refused to present a jolly, good natured demeanor to the members of the press. I think there's something legal brewing here. I think they're handling Glenn a certain way to shortstop his lawyers, based on the advice of the club's attorneys. It's what I've been saying all along, if you want to bring football into the 21st century, you've got to get the lawyers involved.

I D-I-D.

Next:

They're on a mission. I just know they're gonna play up to the limit of their ability this weekend. I'm not sure about the Dolphins, though. I see a high-turnover contest in windy, possibly rainy, possibly snowy Foxboro.

Next:

Rest up, fellas, you've earned your bye. Where'd that big ground game come from? Imports and youngsters up and down the O-line. A reject running back, Antowain Smith, plowing for 156 yards against the Dolphins. This is a hot team, folks, that's peaking at just the right time, and if Oakland falters, the Pats could wind up as the No. 2 seed. Who would have thunk?

Next:

I can't believe that they'll let down against the Panthers, with a shocking division title so close. If they do, then I'll lose my faith in all the values this country (and a few others) stands for.

I couldn't find an end of the season one but that was a fun trip down memory lane.

Oh, I remember that well. After losing to Cincinatti and the Jets it looked like that.

Then watching the team march up those rankings, wow. I recall a link to each of the Dr. Z rankings at the end of the year, probably on kffl at the time. Good days.

One of my favorite snapshot moments from that season was the last scheduled game in the old stadium when the fan brought the sign that said "All I want for Christmas is a home payoff game"... Expectations here have never been the same.

All I wanted for them and us at that juncture was to not be embarassed. But after the tuck call was made reversing that fumble...I knew we were going to the Superbowl. Somehow Pittsburgh didn't scare me and even Drew subbing didn't rattle me...

Then all I wanted was for them and their season and the accomplishment of merely getting there not to be dismissed as a fluke. But when they came out of the tunnel choosing to be introduced as a team...I had the immediate realization that they were actually going to win that MFing game...

Never imagined they could top that moment or validate it the way that they did in 2003 and 2004. That they have been back yet again and never out of contention for a decade even when they lost Tommy for a season is so much more than I as a fan could have ever anticipated. I guess that's why some of the entitled attitudes around here the last few years really grate on me...

Amen to the last part!

As for the rest, I find the following a bit surprising in view of other info we have, such as Drew boycotting the championship parade, or him said to be mouthing "Get me out of here!" on the sidelines during the game.

The first person I saw in the dressing room was Drew Bledsoe, who had been benched for Brady. His locker was right next to the door.

"Congratulations," I said.

"The young guys don't understand," he said, practically in tears. "They don't understand how great this is, how great a moment this is. You can only understand it if you'd been here and lost."

Very well said, your post and the prior ones recounting DR Z's comments really were an incredible walk down memory lane. I remember losing Bledsoe and thinking, man, this is going to be a long horrible season. The season was like a roller coaster ride, so many ups and downs and twists. Being a Pats fan since 1975, I had seen so many bad outcomes, that when Vinitiari kicked the FG to win SB 36, I was waiting to see if there was a flag, or more time left on the clock. It truly was a surreal moment for any old-time Pat's fans.

But when they came out of the tunnel choosing to be introduced as a team...I had the immediate realization that they were actually going to win that MFing game...

I got chills then and every time since that I've seen that intro. I can picture Faulk and Brown hopping up and down..........

man, I've sorely missed Dr. Z. I was a "Z" junkie and when he went down with a stroke I was shocked. I've always had him on my prayer list to get better and come back, though that's probably unlikely given the seriousness of his condition.

As to the trip down memory lane, it's even more amazing to those who've been wearing the laundry for awhile. I've been a fan for almost 4 decades now, and it's been quite a ride. The folks who missed those earlier decades really can't understand just how magical this past one is, and how wonderful it is to see the team be such a powerhouse for so long now.

I gotta agree with MoLewis... some of those complaining just haven't a clue as to how fortunate we all are to have this team.

great fans posting in here, 4 decade gwedd, dam.

I remember the pats were just back round noise for failure in NE, the 85 SB was the only game I ever sat threw. my interest in sports was pretty much zero to begin with.

in 1993 I started playing those football cards in an office pool. With the potential to win some pocket cash every week I found myself glued to the TV on Sundays. after learning how the game was played football became a gripping passion, haven't stopped rooting for the team since then.

I'm a beantown bandwagon homer when it comes to the other 3 sports, lmao
