I had high hopes for Vereen when we drafted him.

I remember before the draft, somone asked Michael Holly if he had to name
one player that Pats would draft, who would it be.

His answer....

Shane Vereen.

He must have had some inside information about the Pats feelings about
Vereen.

I know he missed most of training camp with a minor injury, but I am still
suprised he has not been given a chance to play.

What's the story with this guy ?????
Will he get a chance in 2012, or is he another of a long line of 2nd round
busts?

2nd round busts....
Cunningham, Brace, Butler, Wheatley, Chad Jackson.

The only real score we have had in the 2nd round is Gronkowski
and I also like the Vollmer & Chung pick.

The jury is still out on Dowling and Spikes.

If Vereen & Dowling end up a bust, the busts far out number production from 2nd round picks in recent years.

He's not going to get regular snaps until they trust him in blitz pickup. He fell behind on learning blitz pickup when he missed most of preseason.

I don't buy it...how is keeping the 185 pound Woodhead in there better than what Vereen can provide?

Just the last game against the Jets i recall Woodhead getting blown up by one of the jets scrubs for a sack.

even if he was the best blitz pick up running back since Walter Payton, it would still be hard for him to take snaps in front of four pretty good running backs above him on the depth chart.....especially when 3 out of 5 have to share 3rd down snaps primarily which only occur 15 times a game plus maybe one 2 minute drive.

Hopefully, as this season finishes out with not so tough games, the Pats braintrust feels it is important enough to activate the kid so the possibility exists that he might see the field ....... at least once this season!

If not, then I would start to wonder.

Solid starters are scores in my book. Spikes is starting ahead of Mayo at MLB!

scores: Grankowski, Vollmer, Chung, Spikes
busts: Butler, Wheatley, Jackson
likely busts: Cunningham, Brace
incomplete: Dowling, Vareen

50% is fine with me.

Then Vereen must be even worse. It's that simple. Also, cherry picking Woodhead's blocks is pretty unfair. He's had some good ones this year.

I find it interesting that the OP labeled Brace and Cunningham as "busts" even though they're both still on the team. Espeically Cunningham is a second year player. Some guys take years to develop into good professional players.

It's true that neither is performing well, but you're going to look pretty stupid if one of them starts figuring things out and turns into a contributor. That is at least a very real possibility for Brace, who was PUPed for an elbow injury suffered at the end of last year, not because he's fat and lazy (which is the easiest cheap shot a fan can take at a DL).

the story is that we have Woodhead, faulk as 3rd down backs and also BJGE/Ridley....theres only so many snaps to go around and it seems like the pats would rather use their trusted backs

vereen never really carved out a niche role for himself, and being injured in the pre-season made matters worse.

hopefully we have a couple blowout games where we can give him some snaps

It's not about being the best blocker on the team. It's about making sure no linebacker or safety gets a clean path to Brady, and that's completely mental.

So Spikes is no longer a bust? I'm trying to keep up.

Is that guy still on the team?

yea what happened was they had so much depth at safety, CB and OLB last draft that they just went big in the 2nd round for a 5th string RB.

just another failed 2nd round pick. nothing to see here.

Herr Vollmer was not following orders! and let his guy blow inside untouched. The evil Jet brushed by Woody and made Brady throw that lefthanded "pass" that was correctly ruled a safety. That said, BJGE or even Faulk another excellent blocker, should have been on the field that 3rd down, NOT Woody at the 2 yd line. That's on Bill O'Brien.

He's a rookie who fell behind due to injury in a season where there really wasn't much of an offseason. What do you say we at least let him get a carry in an NFL game before we consider him a bust?

too early to tell. The dude should be getting a few snaps atleast. When will he take Faulks spot? I hope Vereen can finally get it and we have him during the playoffs as a regular player.

Hell... Vereen should be our KR'er

Not just defense, receivers Torrey Smith and Randall Cobb were chosen after Verreen as was Demarco Murray. I would have preferred those guys before the draft and certainly would prefer them now.

I'd like to see him get a shot on kickoffs. He apparently has played some on teams with a tackle and assist.

Me too. Cannon fodder. It's not like we're bringing down the house with KRs like we did in the olden days with what's his name? Oh yeah, Tate, that's it.

I think the Faulk era is overdue to close. I know that BB and Brady have him on the roster for clutchness and blocking but my man has lost a step or two. Use the next 7 games where we have late large leads (make it so) to give the kid a go.

I agree 100%
