Dispelling rumors of a rift, former Patriots defensive coordinator Eric Mangini yesterday said head coach Bill Belichick encouraged him to become head coach of the New York Jets.

Mangini accepted the job Monday and held his introductory press conference yesterday at the Jets' training facility in Hempstead, N.Y. He said that Belichick never tried to talk him out of accepting.

"It never got to that point," Mangini said. "Bill and I are the best of friends. We had a late conversation last night. He really wants what's best for me and my family. Bill always encourages me to take advantage of good situations."

After the Jets formally announced the hiring of Eric Mangini as their new head coach, Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick offered the following comments:

"For over a decade, I had the pleasure of working with Eric Mangini, who is an outstanding coach and an even finer individual. I will always appreciate Eric's contributions. I value our friendship and look forward to supporting Eric's commitment to youth football in the future. Eric worked his way from the most entry-level position to a position of great responsibility during several successful seasons. The opportunity Eric has now earned is truly an example of good things happening to a good, hard-working person and I wish him well."

So all the media guys creating stories about BB being pissed because mangini left should try and find the real reasons of the grudge.

Good pick-up, SVN. I thought recent reports sounded like conjecture, myself.

Wow! I had missed those quotes (and posts). Lazy journalism, yellow journalism, incompetent journalism? Maybe one of them and maybe all three. Either way, it seems those quotes are a prima facia debunking of the media's "BB is pissed cause he didn't want him to leave". Obviously, something else transpired to cause a rift. The story about Mangini's lobbying and pursuit of Patriot staff while still with the Patriots seems a more plausible explanation. And it is quite the royal stabbing in the back IF true. IF true, I hope the guy falls REALLY flat on his face next season! Would Charlie and Romeo have done that? Maybe but somehow I think these guys would have had the respect for BB to wait until they signed the dotted line before looking to do what's best for the their new team. And those guys owe much less to BB than Mangini does.

This is awesome! Great work. Thanks.

I hope we can forward this to the Herald columnist, Tony Massarotti, who writes in his column ("Bill’s recognition factor: Mangini earns praise", BH website, Jan 4, 2007, http://patriots.bostonherald.com/patriots/view.bg?articleid=175260) that:

"Only three days remain before the latest installment of the Border War (Mangini Edition), and let the record show that Belichick this time fired the first shot. Certainly, it didn’t have to be this way. Mangini left his post as defensive coordinator of the Pats nearly a year ago to become head coach of the Jets, an especially wise career move now that Mangini is a leading candidate for NFL coach of the year.

For whatever reason, Belichick regarded that as a personal affront. In the process, he made far more of Mangini’s departure than anyone else, a particularly amusing bit of irony given that Belichick typically trains his players to avoid even remotely controversial behavior."

Why can't he take the effort to investigate and give his opinion on the probable reasons why BB is miffed with Mangini? Had he done his basic work, he clearly wouldn't have written the above. "Personal affront"??? What a smear of BB.

When it is clearly apparent to even the fans that the reasons probably had to do with Mangini attempting to hire valued members of the Pats and tampering with the Branch discussions, why isn't this not even mentioned by these columnists??

I think that this will be the last I will read his column...

The funny thing is, even when someone on their own show (say...Tom Curran) says that it has nothing to do with him going to the Jets, they still repeat the same thing the very next day, or possibly in the very next segment.

Even after all this time it still frustrates me that the majority of media members are lazy and/or incompetent. I understand it, but even so...

:( :explative

You know, even if it was simply a matter of him leaving abruptly, it would be hard to blame BB for being p****d. He invested years developing this guy. How many times can you do that in the space of one career? It's a thankless business, I guess.
It will be interesting to see how it plays out for Eric. IMHO, his personal lack of discipline will be his undoing.
