I've heard alot of talk lately of Wes Welker still be the league's best Wide receiver and I'm not just talking about Michael Irvin. For his size, and lack there of he can certainly do many things even in games that are not won, the guy is simply uncoverable. Players like him can be limited but not completely stopped. What do you all think on this one?

he's top 5 this year

you can't look at it any differently........the comparisons are running to smith and johnson.......all 3 are different.....run different routes......

I like welker, but I'm not sure I would take him over megatron

When you think of best receivers you always think of guys like Calvin Johnson but its hard to argue against Wes being the best slot receiver in the NFL.

Best receiver? No. Best slot receiver? By far. Most important player on this team? Probably.

Welker is the one player we can count on to not quit. I think what he does, the hits he takes and pops right back up, makes him as much, or more of a leader than Brady. He'll give 100% every play no matter the score, whether he's asked to block or catch a pass. You can't say that about everyone.

Best slot receiver, but his stats are inflated this year because the rest of the reviving core outside of the TEs is pitiful.

He's definitely top 5. He had a great game this week yet again. People write off slot receivers, but most of these wideouts don't have the balls to play the slot.

Wes is the most valuable player we have on offense. If we lose him I fully expect the team to flounder ala 2009.

Still no contract for Wes.

Do Krafty and BB consider him expendable?

I've never thought Welker was the best in the league - that tag belongs to one of the Johnson boys or Larry Fitz.

He'll kill you just as much in other ways though.

When was the last time the organization finalized long term contracts to players with existing contracts in season?

They did not do it for this franchise's most important player in history (Tom Brady). What makes you think they will do it for Wes Welker?

The Patriots have to say Goodbye to Wes Welker this Offseason...our Offense can get by without him. BB and co have to focus all their attension on Defense this offseason. We won Chamiponships with Good Defenses...we are now behind the league in that area we are playing catch-up. Our Team is too bad Defensively to spend top dollar on another Offensive player. We will miss you Wes and wish you all the best...but you have played yourself out of the Patriots reach. Thank goodness for Edelman...Wes wont be miss as much in the slot that is Edelman = Welker.

The Pats have given extensions to people like Ninkovich, Wendell, and such during the season. They have also given Light, Warren, Brady, Seymour and others extensions in between seasons with time remaining on the contracts.

That being said, many players elect not to negotiate during the season. As Wes said he didn't want to do.. He also said he wasn't worried about it.

Sorry, but Edelman isn't half the receiver that Welker is. And most people in this thread have ignored the fact that Wes has been lining up as an OUTSIDE receiver as much as a slot receiver.

Some analyst should break down Welker's slot vs. outside numbers this season. I suspect he's beem very productive outside.

Sometimes, I wish it were possible to give a thread zero stars.

Welker's said, though, that getting every possible dollar isn't the most important thing to him.

In other words, he's not going to take $12M/yr to play with a #@%!ty QB. . . . If he leaves, he's going to another contender, and that would be a bad, bad thing.

Is Welker a system receiver, or can he be effective as he is here in any offense?

Every player has various strengths and weaknesses, a good HC is going to take those into account and try to maximize their effectiveness.

In this regard Joe montana was definitely a "system QB" but should thaty take away from his achievements?

Still not sure I can put him up as number one in the whole league but top five even top 3.

But IMO the best case that can be made for him is that of the top 5 non of them can do what Welker is best at at the same level as him while at least this year he has been playing on the outside alot and connected on some deep balls. Basically he is doing more this year and the gap between him and those on the top 5 list is smaller on the outside than on the inside.
