I am wondering if anyone else heard this, or did I misinterpret.

During the Rose Bowl, Brent Musberger was praising Pete Carroll's success at USC and I believe he said something along the lines of how Robert Kraft up in New England let Carroll go a little too soon.

Is this accurate?(I was surprised at the comment, perhaps I misinterpreted it.)

Yes, Carroll has found great success, but Kraft hired Belichick and then we won 3 Super Bowl's to date.

Perhaps I am over-reacting, but I was shocked.

Please respond if you heard this also, or you can clarify for me.

imagine is robert edwards never got injured and pete carroll had a little more success and didn't get fired until a year or two later. we wouldn't ahve 3 superbowls and maybe no tom brady.

Musberger was saying a lot of stupid things during the Rose Bowl.

I remember the downfall of Brent. There was a Thanksgiving Special, at home with Brent Musberger. Like anyone really cared. Same goes for today.

The innumerable college games are great fun to watch, usually.
But ALWAYS ... the announcers shamelessly butter up the coaches.
(I think it is to insure suitable "hospitality" the next time they visit campus.)

Musburger is by no means the worst voice behind a mike.
But he arguably is the most fatuous ... and self-important.

Yes, he did say that about Carroll. I could agree with him if the Pats weren't as successful without him but how can Musberger discount the success Belicheck has had with the Pats. Carroll regressed every year with a lot of talent and Belicheck had to rebuild that team from the ground up and won 3 superbowls. I thought Musberger's comments were a little weird as well.

Bob Costas, although he doesn't seem to be showing signs of dementia yet.

18 year olds love the rah-rah approach. Let's sign the Top 20 recruits each year. Show em the trophies, weather, girls, etc. In the NFL you have to take an analytical approach as to a players worth. You can't just bring in the top guys. There is a salary cap. It rules the league. We had some pretty bad contracts during those years and I'm sure Carroll told the front office how great the player was. We need to keep them. I remember an article by Bob Ryan about Petey when he got canned. Positive; Energetic, youthful, positive out going guy. Wish my daughter would marry someone like him. However,
I just don't want him coaching my professional football team. Gets too buddy/buddy with the players. NFL players not motivated by most of the bs that works on kids.

He or one of the members of his team made an equally ridiculous statement about Junior Seau that really illustrates what they know about the NFL. It went something like this:

"He wears number 55, and as you know that's a jersey with a storied tradition at USC. Way back in the day Junior Seau wore that number, and he is, or was, I think, one of, if not the best, college linebackers of all time."

That part everyone can agree with. This next part wasn't cute or sarcastic, rather it seemed to trickle out as a way to finish the thought:

"And he was a pretty good linebacker in the NFL as well."

Just so we're clear, it wasn't one of those Phil Simms-ish "and the Patriots have a pretty good quarterback too, Greg" types of comments, it was a I-think-the-capital-of-Canada-is-Toronto kind of comment.

I don't think it too far-fetched to suggest that neither Brent Musberger nor anyone else in that booth were - or are - aware that the New England Patriots have won several Super Bowls recently without Pete Carroll.

The Pats never performed under Carrol. There were heading to mediocrity and while the Pats did have some talent let me throw two other names out for you to place side-by-side with Carrol......Tebucky Jones, Chris Canty. I don't think I need to expound on those names and their lack of productivity for their respective draft position.

All Pete's success at USC shows to me is he can recruit well and he does know his X's and O's for a college coach. While he would be far from the worse NFL coach, I don't think his scheming would place him in the upper echelon of NFL coaches and with the talent level fairly even, there is no guarantee with him. He was mediocre with the Pats and will be mediocre again if he leaves USC.

Mussburger is just a tool.

While it is obvious Pete is no BB, I'm not sure anyone could have cooked a gourmet meal with the groceries Bobby Grier was buying back then.....just some terrible drafting in the mid-late 90s......Luckily Kraft realized it was a mistake to take the power from Parcells - who had drafted the core of the Superbowl team and he gave the power to BB. (BTW - don't you love seeing Parcells in agony with TO...)

I guess there was a pretty good 7th rounder - but that was probably just lucky.....

Carroll wasn't that BAD a coach..I really think the poor drafting had a LOT to do about it as well. But I really think he gets pummeled when he shouldn't. He's NOT a good NFL coach..it's not his place home or what he is GOOD at. Maybe more like Pitino in roundball...but less slick. He's great at recruiting and getting great players which in college sports is where it counts. 3-4 years and GONE!! a new wave of talent..can't do that the same way in the NFL..you get rooks but others are there for the long run. Dumb comment by Mushbgr..but would I expect better?? Carroll is doing great at USC..it's the right place time for him to shine..I think he would do better now...but would be smart to stay where he shines..Look at Saban..he's headed BACK to college..it is different and many do NOT have all the organizational skills to do it.

I don't get worked up over what an annoucer may say. There are very few good announcing teams right now. Most are on radio in fact.

Yes PC is a much better college coach than NFL coach. That can be agreed upon. But please do not put all the blame on the Pats lack of success at HIS feet.

If that 97 team had stayed healthy they might have gone to the SB. KEY players were hurt on offense. Ben Coates, Curtis Martin. They only scored 6 friggin points against the hated Steelers. I remember that game vividly since I broke a lamp after the game ending turnover. The defense was playing some of the best football in the league that year. You can't blame Carrol for those injuries.

And yes the drafting was VERY sub-par that also had an impact.

Anyway it all worked out for the best for both parties. How many times that that happen.

The only way he returns to the NFL is if LA gets another team.

Carroll is a GREAT college football coach. As a pro coach he was only mediocre. And his rah rah approach to the game might work with young adults but probably has less sway with hardened NFL veterans. I think Carroll is right where he belongs, in USC. I respect his ability but he is more suited for the college game. I don't believe the Pats would enjoy 3 superbowl wins had the Pats retained Carroll for 5 more years. Also Booby Grier HAD to GO!

Is it me, or are the old time sports announcers using the Boxer's approach to retirement? Meaning as long as anyone would pay them, they will show up?

Was their anything sadder then seeeing a diminshed **** Clark New Year's Eve?

What about Pat Summerall? He was the best in his day, but he was absolutely horrible in the Rose Bowl last year.

I remember running over Musberger in the Louisiana Superdome in 1987! This guy has been around forever.

Can't they find any "new" talent? I can't believe that ESPN does not put Jaworski in the booth, he is great!

I used to like Musberger, years ago. But now he has become a complete toad. He reads from a script always. Wouldn't be able to breathe without it.

Sad.

When are we going to get some real men and real women talking to us on the tube, instead of all these empty-headed pretty faces. Sheesh.

That's a nice list but you do realize that Carroll (and Bobby Grier) were fired before the 2000 draft? Or did you think Tom Brady was a Bobby McCombine pick?

I think Kraft did Pete Carroll a favor, I really believe Carroll would never have the success in the NFL as he is having in Collage. Carroll has two National Championships and if it wasn't for Vince Young he'd have a 3rd, put that in NFL terms and he'd be talked about like Belichick is now. Right now Carroll is king of collage, the only dumb thing he could do is think about going pro. I don't know about the rest of you, but I kind of enjoy seeing his success at USC, as long as he stay's there.
