Bills | Fletcher-Baker nearing end with team?
Tue, 2 Jan 2007 11:08:23 -0800

Mark Gaughan, of the Buffalo News, reports Buffalo Bills LB London Fletcher-Baker, who is set to become a free agent this offseason, voiced his displeasure Monday, Jan. 1, over the team's refusal to award him a contract extension this season. "I wasn't happy about having to play this year without having a contract extension," Fletcher-Baker said. "I was not happy at all… I was not at all happy about having to be forced to play out my contract when my performance four years prior to that, three years prior to that, two years prior to that, should have merited an extension well before this. You've extended other guys, why not extend me?"

We should sign this guy!! He puts up huge numbers and i feel he is very underrated in the nfl..

On the DVD 21 Belichick spoke very, very highily of him, so maybe.

him or briggs in my opinion.

Here's what BB had to say during the Belistrator, before the Pats' Week 4 matchup against the Bills in 2004:

BB: "Well, we'll take a look at Buffalo's linebackers. This is really a good group.

:shot of Buffalo's defensive front:

BB: "Take a look at the whole front, the RE over here is Schobel, #94, he plays over here on our left side on Matt Light. Pat Williams and Sam Adams are the two tackles. In this case, this is Adams over here on the guard. And #90 Kelsay and #92 Denney play over here at the end spot."

BB: "But the linebackers are Spikes, who plays on the weakside, #51, and Fletcher, one of the best linebackers in the league, plays the middle spot, #59, and Posey, #96 plays over here on the strong side."

:video of Posey sacking Volek:

BB: "On this particular play, we're going to watch Posey blitz off the edge here, and come in here and make a play and sake Volek here. He strips it, and that's Sam Adams picking it up."

Lynch: "Speaking of guys being tough to wrap up..."

BB: "We had trouble with him last year on that interception too."

Lynch: "Yes, you did."

:side-angle shot of Buffalo's defense:

BB: "On this play against Jacksonville, here you get a look at them in coverage. And this is there sub defense, also called a dime package. Fletcher's here in the middle, this is Spikes up on top. What they're going to do is that they're going to play a zone defense which is what they like to do. And drop back here, and they do a real good job of reading the QB. This will be Spikes, you'll see him coming in and hit this crossing pattern coming in over here from the strong side. If we freeze it just before the catch, right here, you'll see that Spikes is getting ready to drive on the crosser, and this is Williams, Jacksonville's #1 draft choice, and there's a welcome to the NFL."

Lynch: "Whoa."

:video of a Radiers' rush:

BB: "This is a play at the end of the Oakland game. Oakland is ahead 10-3, there's a little over two minutes left in the game, and it Buffalo is trying to get the ball back. Fletcher, #59, is playing the MLB spot here, and again, I can't tell you how good of a player this guy is. In the last 5 years, Mike, this guy has over 900 tackles. Nine-hundred. More than Ray Lewis, more than Urlacher, more than everybody. So, here he comes to make a play over here on this running play. You can see how athletic he is, how quick he is, and really makes a solid tackle."

Lynch: "There's two tacklers now..."

BB: "And now, he's the first guy to jump up and signal for a timeout. You can see how aware and into the game he is. This guy is a very high-energy player and so productive. He's really the most productive player in the league over the last 5 years. It's incredible. He doesn't get nearly enough credit.

Lynch: "Rather than celebrating and doing a dance..."

BB: "He's into the game."

:video of Fletcher returning a kickoff:

BB: "Well, here we go. Freeze it there. This is Buffalo's kickoff return, and here he is right here, London Fletcher, #59."

:Lynch chuckles:

BB: "He's one of the deep safeties along with McGee. McGee is a very good returner here. You can see Oakland's trying to kick away from McGee, and kick it over here to Fletcher. Fletcher has no problem. This is actually a return that's designed to go to the left, but with the ball kicked over to the right, Fletcher makes a good decision, get the ball upfield, breaks a couple tackles, and runs hard. When was the last time you've seen a MLB return kickoffs, Mike?"

Lynch: "I can't imagine **** Butkus or Ray Nitschke running back and kicking the DB on a kickoff."

BB: "So, that gives you an idea of London's versatility back there to be able to...and what a team player he is. He's really a good football player and will do anything that's asked of him. From little John Carroll College in Cleveland."

Lynch: "Really? John Carroll college. Only player to come out of there?"

BB: "Well, don't forget about Josh McDaniels and Nick Caserio, they're in the organization. So, it's quite an alumni group there."

Lynch: "I know I wasn't going to stop you on that one. Now, has Ted Johnson seen this film here?"

:BB chuckles:

BB: "We're going to show that to Ted, and we're going to work on our ball handling."

Lynch: "Did he campaign to be back there running back kickoffs?"

BB: "Bruschi who wants to be back there."

Lynch: "Bruschi! Every time he touches the ball he scores. You might want to put him back there."

Lynch: "That's terrific, interesting coach. Good luck, first divisional game obviously, divisional games are very, very important and you're back in it now, got a routine going, playing every week."

BB: "Yeah, well this is a big one going on the road to Buffalo. We know what a challenge this is going to be and we're going to have to play better than we've played the first two weeks."

Good stuff Pats1. With the amount of resources you have and your inside information I'm pretty convinced you are on the Pats payroll.

Where do you get all this info?

I certainly wish I was, but no, I'm not.

That was just from the '21' DVD.

Guess I'll have to attribute it to a good memory. :D

I'm assuming that's the win streak one?

You can match up London's numbers against any MLB in the league and you wont be able to tell whos numbers are whos.

He's older but hes damn good.

Great stuff, at first I thought he was a little too small to play ILB in a 3-4, most of his career has been in a 4-3 with protection from some big tackles. But our DLine may be good enough to allow a slightly smaller player to play inside. Your transcript has opened up my mind... LBs are so important to BB's defense maybe we get older instead of younger, especially at ILB... BB has never been shy about using vets, I think this sets the Patriots apart from most organizations. Instead of drafting for potential and waiting 2-3 years to find out if a prospect can turn into a player, the Pats are great at getting a proven vet with a little less upside but more proven production.

What if our LBs for next year looked like:

ROLB - Colvin, TBC
RILB - Bruschi, Alexander, Mays
LILB - London-Fletcher, Seau
LOLB - Vrabel, Woods

Notes
  • maybe TBC walks and his spot becomes TBD, developmental draft pick
  • maybe Seau doesnt come back and his spot goes to Izzo or a draftee
  • I am a big fan of a rotation at LB, in 03 and 04 we had Colvin, McGinest, Vrabel outside and Bruschi, Johnson and Phifer inside. Each player had slightly different strengths and could be used situationally for maximum effectiveness

Great post, I am starting to like this idea, the other option had in mind is Napolean Harris from the Vikings. He is younger and has great measureables (6'2, 250, 4.58 speed) but may be more of an athelete than a football player, the opposite of Fletcher. I prefer the football player.

Pats1, you're a treasure!

My vote is for Patrick Willis.

Fletcher would be nice, but will be costly. Re-sign Seau, draft Willis. Bruschi and Seau will help groom this up and coming stud.

Willis is a wel grounded person, been thru tough times, leadership and hard work are his forte as well.

He has being a Pat written all over him.

Put me down for the most productive inside linebacker the past few years over some undersized, albeit "well grounded," rookie.

I would not rule out the possibility of Jason Taylor playing outside LB for us next year. Don't think for a minute that Junior Seau hasn't said a few words to Taylor and Zack Thomas about the Patriots organization.

There will always be top notch players with a year or two left in the tank, but no ring. Belichick has proven that he will find a role for these guys when they pop up.

Bills | Fletcher-Baker nearing end with team?

We should sign this guy!! He puts up huge numbers and i feel he is very underrated in the nfl..

I'll preface this by noting that London Fletcher was one on a list of three free agent LBs I wanted BB/SP to make a run at in the offseason. However, what he says above rubs me the wrong way a bit. True the Jills should have extended him earlier and I can understand his frustration and bitterness to an extent. Still, I wish he had said instead "I want to go to a team that has a chance of making the playoffs" or "show me the rings" rather than "show me the extension."

Seems like a BB kind of guy. I like him. Definitely worth a run at him.

Wonder if he likes winning SBs more than just padding personal stats??
