Re: Former player says Belichick paid him to start fights in practice

Rex Ryan basically did this on Hard Knocks. I'm sure Belichick will take 100x more crap for it.

Meh. I don't see anything coming of this.

Re: Former player says Belichick paid him to start fights in practice

Belichick mentioned that it was done to him when he was starting out, a coach would "tip" him gas money for a ride. He in turn did this as he got higher up the coaching chain, helping young assistants and staff personnel.

Re: Former player says Belichick paid him to start fights in practice

Slow news day or what--Come on write some interesting articles, do they realize the Patriots are in the middle of the 2011 season why write crap from YEARS ago.

Re: Former player says Belichick paid him to start fights in practice

This is actually not too surprising, especially from that time. Lots of teams had bounties and such. This was all widely known. Good stuff though. Eaton was a mad man. I didn't realize he was even on the Browns.

Re: Former player says Belichick paid him to start fights in practice

Eventhough this a non-story, it isn't even a Patriots story. From the sound of the report it was when Eaton was a scrub in Cleveland before he followed Belichick here in 1996.

I'm sure all the Belichick haters will turn this into a huge deal, but if any team is tarnished by this story it is the Ravens who were the Browns when this happened. Even then, I don't see how it tarnishes anyone. It isn't technically legal, but it isn't a huge offense. If Belichick was paying players to hurt players on other teams, then it would be a real story.

Re: Former player says Belichick paid him to start fights in practice

Id pay for somebody to start a fight with Ocho in hopes of lighting a fire under his 6 million dollar keester.

Would anybody else like to chip in a few bucks?

Re: Former player says Belichick paid him to start fights in practice

Happens with every team, but say Belichick did and it becomes evil and sinister. At least that's the intention, anyone with half a brain knows the drill by now.

Re: Former player says Belichick paid him to start fights in practice

Isn't this a very old story?

Re: Former player says Belichick paid him to start fights in practice

The "spygate" idiots are all responding to the post.

-'ooh the cheater is busting the salary cap. once a cheater ... always'

These guys are such morons. The salary cap only counts the top 45. And certainly not to a PS player.

maybe there is a tax evasion charge but that would be on the receiver of the cash not the payer.

Its been going on in the NFL for decades.

Come on now, no point in letting facts get in the way of the village townfolks across the nation gathering with their pitchforks and torches.

It only happened 16 or so years ago. Very topical! :D

No, I mean this particular story reported somewhere at least five years ago. Maybe in one of the Patriots books.

Maybe a different player actually.

One thing brought up in the comments on PFT that I didn't think of is that if Eaton was a practice squad player, Belichick did absolutely nothing wrong. There are no rules about how much you can pay a practice squad player other than a minimum. His salary didn't count against the cap either. It might have violated the spirit of the rules in some way, but the actually rules pretty much doesn't prohibit it as far as I can tell.

I think Goodell should strip Cleveland of their 1st round pick. Forgot to add. That would be The Baltimore Ravens franchise now.

There are a few in gathering in this town as well.

Re: Former player says Belichick paid him to start fights in practice

There goes a #1 pick (only mild sarcasm intended).

Re: Former player says Belichick paid him to start fights in practice

Considering that nobody cared when it was revealed that actual bounties were being placed on players in actual games, I don't foresee anyone caring too much about this.
