Eli continues to insist he is in same QB class as Tom Brady

Brady has been compared to Montana numerous times and he always deflects the comparison away when quizzed about it.

Things Eli Manning said:

"I believe I'm in the class of elite QBs, like Tom Brady."

Things Eli Manning didn't say:

"I am Tom Brady."

It doesn't make any sense to argue about things Eli never said. I'm starting to get the feeling that most of the animosity towards Eli has to do with the fact that he beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl. That loss hurts just as much as ever, but I can't fathom holding it personally against Eli. Is he really such a hate-able guy?

Not neccassirily.

I could care less what Eli and the Giants do, the only team I hate is the Jets. We are all just accessing this information differently and applying it in different terms.

We know that Eli didnt say he was Tom Brady. We just feel they shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath. Forget what he said or what the article reads, do you personally think that Eli Manning is on Tom Brady's level?

Honestly?

I can name atleast 6-7 QBs I like much better than him.

To me, it's not about whether or not I believe Eli is on Tom's level.

Eli believes he is, and that's his opinion. He's entitled to it. A reporter asked him for his opinion, and he gave it.

In this day and age of "it is what it is" and "the Dolphins are a great team, really, they do a lot of things well", I can't find it in me to get upset at an athlete just because they say what they believe. I want to hear what they really think. What is the point of reading interviews with people who say nothing?

Eli obviously thinks he's got what it takes to be a great quarterback. Good for him. If I were a Giants' fan, I wouldn't want him to say anything else.

I recall when Elisha was coming out in in the draft he was touted as possibly the most talented Manning... I have a feeling his whole life has been about comparisons and he likely has the all too common third child insecurities as a result. So he can't bring himself to say, I wish, or that's what I'm striving for...

If not for the greatest helmet catch in NFL history and one hell of a defensive game plan coupled with that pedigree, he might not even be a Giant these days. He's never been a leader, Strahan of all people had to rally the troops around him and Generalisimo Coughlin in 2007 or they wouldn't have even made the playoffs. Mara was questioning whether Eli could ever lead a team to a championship...

As franchise QB's go he's about as close to the antithesis of Tom Brady as you can get. They've all got talent or they'd never get a shot in the NFL. At least guys like Romo have the charisma if not the focus and discipline to lead...albeit in fits and starts. Eli has nothing going for him beyond his maddeningly inconsistent performances on the field and dumb luck.

Amassed all sorts of college accolades. Not so many at the next level. Thirty years old, his career half over, one Pro Bowl nod. A SB MVP courtesy of David Tyree and Mike Carey swallowing his whistle... Never an all pro, not even second team... Closest he's ever come to a league MVP trophy is when he visits Peyton's house...

But other than that...nearly a mirror image of Brady's eliteness...:bricks:

That sounds a bit petty. Eli earned that MVP not only with great play during the entire playoffs, but with one of the most clutch 2 minute drives in SB history. The helmet catch can't be made if he doesn't escape pressure & make a great throw.

I disagree w/ some of the responses on the thread that he's saying he's "as good" as Brady. He's just saying he's in the same class, meaning he's one of the top QB's in the game today.

Eli Manning is a 2nd Tier QB IMO....hes not an elite QB like Brady, his brother, rodgers, brees(?).....but hes better than the flaccos/sanchez's and is in that 2nd tier of QB's who are good, can manage a game and make passes and win for their team like Roethlisberger, Romo etc.

And just like in any case on this message board, we're all entitled to disagree with his opinion as vehemently as we choose to particularly since the facts don't remotely back up his assertion.

If someone asked Tom Brady if he was in Montana's class and he said "hell, yes", his assertation would be well within reason...but I'd be disappointed that he felt it necessary to even make it. Difference is Tom is not insecure and as a result he would never feel the need to make that kind of assertation. Eli has to because he's not only insecure, he knows on some level his employers and Giants fans share his insecurity.

Manning compared himself TO Tom Brady. He was asked a direct question and gave a direct answer.

The New York Giants quarterback didn't shy away when, as a Tuesday guest on "The Michael Kay Show" on ESPN New York 1050, he was asked if he is in the same class as three-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady

"I consider myself in that class," said Manning,

You don't earn the SB MVP for great play during the entire playoffs or Peyton wouldn't have one, and Eli did nothing against GB in the NFCC, and the helmet catch can't be made if Mike Carey doesn't admittedly choke on his whistle when Eli was clearly in the grasp... He's not one of the top QB's in the game today. He's in the mix of the top ten by default, but the top 5 are the elite QB's and those are Brady, the other Manning when healthy, Rodgers, Brees and Roethlisberger by virtue of his two rings including one won when he flat out sucked although he literally got them there that post season...

Eli's career completion % remains well under 60% in the regular season and the playoffs. Absent 5 games this season his career passer rating in the regular season and playoffs is an abyssmal 78%. His TD to INT ratio is well above 2-1...while his TD to Fumble ratio IS NOT. And that **** kills the Giants because they have consistently fielded a pretty damn good defense...and are perennial pre season favorites in the overhyped perportedly uber talented NFCE.

Eh; we disagree about Eli. He made some unbelievable plays in that CG against GB, in one of the coldest games in history, so I'm not sure what you're referring to there. For the SB, Mike Carey's crew is one of the least penalizing in the NFL, and they called that game consistently. It could have been Ron Winter's crew, in which case they would have called in the grasp, as well as throwing about 15 other flags for various offenses and non-offenses.

As for the "if" game, any fan can play that all day, with any QB. With Brady, there are plenty - if not for the tuck rule, if his D didn't shut down the greatest show on turf, if not for the botched kickoff against Carolina, if McNabb hadn't been sick, etc.

If it weren't for a fluke 4 game run by his team Eli wouldn't be close to considered a top 10 qb right now. Very mediocre #'s for someone who's had pretty quality talent around him.

Based on their respective performances this season ONLY, I don't think the gap between the two is that severe.

Only a fool would base the comparison on their respective performances in one season, not to mention Eli initially made the assertion in August, before this season started...when Brady was coming off his otherworldly MVP season and Eli was coming off his career worst 25 INT season...

Jeez...all poor Eli had going for him in that NFCC game - the second to last playoff game he's won in his illustrious career - was his opponents QB... And his PK eventually shaking off the yips...
