Belichick defends cornerbacks performance

If cornerback play wasn't one of the top issues coming out of that game, then I'd hate to see what was.

You know your secondary sucks when you have to come out and say they don't suck, just saying...

I'm leery of anything BB says to the press. He's not going to break down exactly where his team's weaknesses are, it's just not his way.

That said, though the corners didn't play well at all, the majority of the damage seemed to be happening over the middle of the field (early on it was Heath Miller doing it all), which isn't (or isn't usually) the assignment of a corner. Safety play was probably a bigger factor in coverage, alongside mismatches against our linebackers.

Belichick rarely if ever throws his players under the bus to the media. If he really thinks they suck, he isn't going to say it.

Good comedy by Belichick....

This isn't the first time Belichick has talked up terrible players.

Waiting for the Belichick ball washers to agree with him. This defense is just brutal, I'm a diehard fan so piss off if you don't want to hear that.

Its like all the Sanchez propaganda.

Not much he could say, he threw them to the lions. Curran asked good questions and BB answered more than usual. what are you going to do? There's going to be some intense coaching up of that unit, or the few CBs that have bounced on and off the P squad.

I'm encouraged by the front seven prospects, but it won't mean much if we don't patch the leak behind. Chung, McCourty and Arrington will need to come up huge in leadership.

That was a tepid defense of his CBs at best. He deflected attention away from them by asking Curran to point out plays the CBs were poor, then tried to steer attention to the D in the middle of the field. At no point did he come out and say they played well.

Regards,
Chris

The fact that the defense played poorly does not mean that the corners were necessarily the heart of the problem.
It is certainly correct that the majority of the completed passes were inside the numbers and underneath the secondary.
A defense that forces one punt is a defense that played awfully. That doesn't mean that it is incorrect to state that one area was less of a problem than another.

Belichick would never publicly state which part of the defense was the worst or most to blame for the horrid performance against the Steelers. Coach better, rush better, cover better, tackle better etc. Your point is valid that their team defense sucked - they all need to do better.

IMO the fact that Molden was pulled spoke volumes. He wasn't competitive. I also think that McCourty is quietly getting stronger. His tackling against the Cowboys left a lot to be desired though - we'll see. I'm just hopeful that the guy has things worked out a bit better.

Right. Belichick is spot on with is analysis - they didn't give up big plays and did okay on the outside. The corners executed the designed gameplan; a gameplan designed for corners that should be executed.

I rewatchd the 1st quarter and a half of the game today. And I didn't think the CBs were the problem with the defense at all. Last time I checked CBs don't cover Heath Miller. McCourty in particular played pretty decently. One thing I did notice though was the safeties were so damn far back. Definitely were afraid of getting beat over the top.

Well, if the corners weren't the problem then it's the coaching, something that Rodney Harrison suggested similarly in his brutally honest piece.

I still believe the Patriots out-coached themselves against the Steelers.

Safeties and linebackers. Most of the damage was done down the middle of the field.

Safeties and linebackers. Most of the damage was done down the middle of the field because the game plan called for the safeties and linebackers to drop back about 10-15 yards deeper than normal in order to protect the corners and safeties from the speed of Wallace..

Fixed that for you...

I hate to be a pessimist but I need to vent.

We have big problems and we've made some horrible decisions with personnel-specifically in the secondary. We've opted for quicker players...but it seems they lack the aggressiveness of (last 10 yrs)-Otis Smith Tebucky Jones, Ty Law, Wilson, Samuels etc....etc......list goes on

I'm really disappointed and angry at the Bodden move. That was stupid.

I'm not a coach and I don't see the practices daily either-so I don't know what's best for the team to win.

Buffalo looks great right now....

Love BB but...

Bumble B. is not a good DB coach.

Who did he have come in to help a couple of yrs. ago? Dom Capers?

We drafted :

1.Butler CB (2nd round)-gone.
2.Merriweather S (1st)-gone!
3.Wilhite CB (4th)-gone
4. Wheatley CB (2nd)-gone
5.McGowan S (CHI)-gone
6. Sanders S -gone!
7. Bodden (DET(- gone!
8. McCourty CB (1)- ACTIVE
9. Dowling CB (Top 2nd)- OUT
10. Chung S (2nd)- ACTIVE (gotta stay healthy or we're done!)

The issue is developing our DB's...better coaching.
Bill needs help
