Did anyone notice the terrible nocalls from the refs? Blantant Holding on almost every steelers snap on our d-lineman. The horsecolar tackle on grok. Polamolu tackling welker by the neck. Polomolu swatting the ball at the end right in front of the ref. The pats played a poor game and deserved to lose. But they seemed to get a lot of help. (Sorry in advance for my poor spelling.)

STOP IT! please ******* stop it.

Re: ok the patriots lost. i accept that, but....

Stop what? Im just stating my opinion. Unless of course you think that was a legal hit on welker.

Poor officiating has pretty much been the story of the 2011 season across the NFL. Is it a kick in the pants that there was a penalty or two that should of been called that might of helped with a possible comeback? Yes. At this point, I'd love to see a blatantly bad or non-call be made that costs a team an important game, like a playoff one for there to be a real change with officiating in the NFL.

EDIT-I think the pic used here in the article summed yesterday up pretty well:

I'm with you 100% on the bad refs. There was way too much crap allowed and BTW, if the Hairboy knocks the ball into the endzone and the Steelers player fails to secure the ball while he is still in play, why the hell is it a safety?

I don't expect the refs to catch everything and wouldn't want to watch a game with calls all the time, but if you call the blatant holds and facemasks at the start of the game, you are 90% of the way towards calling a decent game.

Re: ok the patriots lost. i accept that, but....

As soon as I saw that Carey was the ref I knew it would be a long day for our D line. I don't know if he does it with everyone but he never seems to call holding when our D line is getting choked, see Superbowl 42.

Re: ok the patriots lost. i accept that, but....

There were bad calls and non-calls, but you can say that about most games. I will not blame a loss on bad calls. That is the Jets fans' mentality. If the Pats played good enough yesterday, they would have overcome any bad calls.

I have to say the Carey crew is the worst. I am pretty sure they called the Jets/Chargers game last week and that game was an unmitigated disaster from an officiating standpoint.

I think the Pats benefitted from some bad calls/non-calls as they were definitely on the bad side of those bad calls/non-calls. So I don't blame the officiating crew for the loss, but this crew is just painful to watch.

Absolutely. Not the reason we lost at all, I just hate the sight of Carey because of SB 42 between the free timeout for the Giants and the non holding calls on the Tyree play. I'll never consider him a good ref after that.

Whatever, the officiating didn't cost us the game. It was pretty bad though.

Re: OK the Patriots lost; I accept that, but did anyone notice the terrible non-calls

losers blame the refs.

Re: OK the Patriots lost; I accept that, but did anyone notice the terrible non-calls

I don't think the OP or anybody else blamed the refs for the loss. (I thought the OP went out of the way to state the Pats lost b/c they played poorly.)

Re: OK the Patriots lost; I accept that, but did anyone notice the terrible non-calls

Holding calls non holdings calls, they happen, this crew was playing with a wide strike zone, letting the Steelers be physical, BB has to know this and tell his defense, hey this is the game you can hold for a bit more, clutch a but more, etc. That is on the Pats coaches, not to adjust to the refs.

The call that upset me was the Gronk non TD, since you replay all scoring drives, you would think that the refs would call it a TD if they were unsure, and than have replay tell if Gronk did not get in. For them, to call an immediate non TD, seemed very strange, since it took another minute and half to score from the 1, that played killed the pats.

Re: ok the patriots lost. i accept that, but....

if the Hairboy knocks the ball into the endzone and the Steelers player fails to secure the ball while he is still in play, why the hell is it a safety?

Because the last team that had possession was NE.

The only possible outcomes of that play once the ball was in the endzone were:
  • safety - if NE recovers it or it goes through the endzone
  • touchdown if PIT recovers it in the endzone
  • illegal batting penalty on PIT - play is nullified

The one thing it couldn't possibly be was a touchback.

Hairboy illegally batted the ball. Officials should have flagged it. But since they didn't and since the illegal bat penalty can't be assessed on replay, the safety had to stand even though it was bogus.

Re: OK the Patriots lost; I accept that, but did anyone notice the terrible non-calls

The call that upset me was the Gronk non TD, since you replay all scoring drives, you would think that the refs would call it a TD if they were unsure,

As I've said elsewhere, I totally disagree with that line of thinking. That will result in a bias toward awarding TDs on plays where no TDs were called since the call on the field establishes a presumption of correctness than can only be overturned by "indisputable evidence".

What they need to do is what some other poster has said -- extend the auto-review to any play where the ball is marked down inside the 1 as well as scoring plays.

Absolute gold for draftniks on page 2 of that link in the paragraphs under the heading "Book Review".

No more blaming of McDaniels for the offensive busts.

It was an ass kicking, and the game wasn't nearly as close as the score indicated. The Patriots almost got lucky enough to catch up despite the whooping, but come on. You don't blame the refs when you suffer this kind of beat down.

Re: OK the Patriots lost; I accept that, but did anyone notice the terrible non-calls

Officials will be inconsistent with holding calls, they will also mess up pass interference, but what I found astounding about yesterday's officiating crew is that they screwed up in spotting the ball quite a few times. That's unforgivable. That's basic refereeing. AND, they allowed the Steelers to be in the neutral zone for a majority of the game..

It was like the line of scrimmage didn't even count in this game. It reminded me of playing football in my backyard as a kid. Simms was like, whoa, they are several yards off on that spot! And the refs nor the teams noticed.

If you watch the final minute, you will see the timekeeper reeling off 6 or 7 seconds after the official's whistle as well, and the clock never resets. Watch the refs blow the whistle at :44 seconds, and the clock winds down to :38. Then they blew the whistle at :24 and it wound down to :19.

If the refs can't spot the ball, nor keep time, then they are incompetent.

Inconsistent holding calls and pass interference, I can understand.

Spotting and time is basic to football however.

Actually, I think they wound up with the right spot on the one Simms noticed, or possibly it was still a half yard off after they tried to correct it.

I agree, though, with the point re spots. The ones at the end of the game were judgment, but I thought they were off not only after the Gronk reception but also on Faulk's. again, those are judgment calls, though.

(Same thing happened during the USC/Stanford game on the wrong spot-- not judgment calls on a play, but simply putting it back in the wrong place after a penalty, I think. Seems to happen a surprising amount in college games.)

The only thing that killed me w/the no-calls on holds were how blatant a couple of them were. Usually if an O-lineman is beaten and is pulling the D-lineman from another direction, it gets called.

What I really don't want to see is the NFL becoming like the NBA, where I simply have no idea what fouls really are because of how inconsistent the officiating is.
