There has been no hiding the fact that I have an unhealthy infatuation (in a football sense, not a gay sense, "not that there's anything wrong with that") with Georgia Tech WR Calvin Johsnon, but watching him in today's Bowl game, all I have to say is WOW. This guy is going to be a game breaker ! 6'5" 230, 4.35 speed, great hands and strength, great route running, excellent character, etc. I've already seen some mock drafts where Johnson get's picked in the top 2 overall (Brady Quinn #1 and Johnson #2). Seriously, I know we have needs elsewhere, but I would trade both #1 picks, and a #2 to the Raiders to get the #1 pick overall and draft this guy. I haven't been this impressed with a college WR in quite some time.

Calvin Johnson would definately put us over the edge, our offense would be incredible. There are other WR's I'd love to see on the Pats, and we may wind up with one, but this guy is above and beyond anything I've seen in years. I know college success doesn't always translate to pro success, but I think this kid is a can't miss.

No.

Next please.

Detroit bound! How can Millen pass him up?

The kid is great and there is no doubting that, but the Patriots do not value that position very highly and to give up 2 1st and 1 2nd for just one player is not the Patriot way. 1st round picks on the Pats have almost assuredly been starters, 2 will always be greater then 1.

I posted this before about a trade for him and was shouted down like a hungry bulldog off the back of a meat trunk

Great, thought out response and rebuttal. Brilliantly researched as well.

Calvin Johnson would not make this offense "incredible." Any player that does not have the last name "Brady" doesn't make a team incredible.

To me, this Johnson person you speak of is worthless until he proves himself in the NFL.

It would take more than the two first round picks, and you'd still get better overall value with a 21 or so and a 32. May I remind you of some of the #2 picks in the last 5 years?

Typical NCAA player h-y-p-e.

Your first sentence explains it all.

(Did he play in one of those silly little bowl games today?)

Nobody is going to give him up for 2 picks in the 20s. And the Pats are old enough at some positions (LB) and shaky enough at others (secondary esp w/ Samuel a FA) that they really can't give up more, but for the 2 first round picks, in a heartbeat.

So with 3 picks in the first 2 rounds in a deep defensive draft, instead of restocking the defensive side of the ball and ensuring another 5 years of dominance, we should trade all those picks for the privilege of paying a ridiculous sum of money to roll the dice on a receiver of all things? Picking at the top of the NFL draft is a total crapshoot, that usually ends badly for the team because they are unlikely to get a decent return on their investment. This just reeks of desperation, but this team is not in a desperate situation. We aren't the Bengals hoping to get lucky with Carson Palmer so we have a franchise guy, we've got that guy, a great cap situation and a solid team. This draft should be all about building quality depth and youth that will be ready to step in for veterans in a few years.

you get better value with 2 first rounders later in the draft as pats1 stated. plus the essense of the patriots is to build overall depth and not sink all their stock into one player.

they don't beat you because they have 1 or 2(top players at their position) of the 11 def or off players they put on the field.

they beat you because player 5-11 are better than your 5-11 on the field.

plus the two players you draft you have for cheap money for 5 years. just ask wilfork, maroney, watson, mankins.

they beat you because

I don't think it's desperation at all. You're filling one of your biggest needs. And if you don't think WR is a need, well I disagree. You fill a need with a player every scout says is one of the best players in years. It depends what you think of the player. If you think he's can't miss, it's worth it. And remember, the best FA available at the position is Drew Bennett, who I would sign not anticpating a draft trade. This is not an elite WR group on the roster right now. There is still an opportunity to stock the defensive depth in free agency and with the rest of the draft picks, but if this guy is a stud, and all indications say he is, there's nothing wrong w/ being the agressor. That said nobody is giving him up, especially, again, in a weak WR FA year.

CJ is the best player in college football and should have won the Heisman trophy. He will be the best player in the draft this year, and is the one player at the top of my wish list for the Pats, though unattainable. No way I trade multiple #1s for any single player. Still, I don't believe he has 4.35 speed. My guess is 4.50, a bit faster than Larry Fitzgerald. His speed really isn't that improtant. His hands, savvy, size, attitude make him unstoppable.

It would take the two #1s this year and next year's #1, two low #1s aren't going to get him.

Move on.

TO/Andre Johnson clone imo minus attitude. Class guy

His speed might not be 4.35..but hes very fast for his size. I would say 4.42. Hes got great leap..hands..size..combo of speed/size/strength.

i would trade up if he SOMEHOW slipped to like #10 or something and give our 2nd instead of 2 firsts.

It's not a need, it's a weaker area on the team. 12-4 teams don't have needs, 4-12 teams do (and that need is usually quarterback). And there is no such thing as a can't miss player. One popped ACL, and guess what? You missed. There is everything wrong with "being the aggressor" as you describe it - in your "aggression", you're trading multiple valuable assets for a single asset that is almost certainly not going to match the value of what you gave up, let alone exceed it. And you're paying more money in the process. It's a bad, bad idea, as years of draft results have shown, and it's not the Patriot way.

We aren't going to trade #22 or whatever and our #2 to get to #10 - not that Johnson will be there. I would love him as much as anyone but this is ******ed. It would take both #1s and something to get to #10 - and Johnson wouldn't be there anyway.

Nearly every year there is a can't miss WR at the top of the draft. It is amazing how many of them miss.

Johnson looks like he has star potential but there is no chance he will be a Patriot.

Maybe we'll get lucky and he'll pop for 'roids or dope or something at the combine...;)

I was saying the same thing about Charles Rogers back in the '03 draft. Wonder what happened to him?
