Sauerbrun must have been ordered to angle his punt out of bounds and away from Pac Man Jones at the end of yesterday's first half. After his booming 55 yd punt is returned for TD by Pac Man Jones, BB seeks out the punter on the sidelines. BB to Sauerbrun:..." what happened? What f..kin happened?." (the words that follow by BB is the gist of my best lip reading interpretation):.."you should be off the f...king team for that."

I don't think he was being reamed out for just missing a saving tackle on the elusive Jones.

“Yeah, obviously we had trouble with him. I’d just say, in general, I feel like I didn’t do a good job coaching today. There were a lot of errors out there, and quite a few of them were my fault. I’ll take the blame on most of those. I know I got upset at [Todd] Sauerbrun after the punt, but that probably is more my fault than his, too. We just have to do a better job against some of the unique players these guys have. I have to do a better job. I take most of the responsibility on a lot of the bad plays we had today – Henry’s runs … if we get a little better coaching, maybe we can play more competitively.”

That's from Reiss's blog.

Hmmmm will they dump him??

He just outkicked the coverage trying to boost his punting average.

BB let him know that the net is more important than the gross.

Saurbrun is a known meathead that probably responds well to loud and obscene coaching methods.

I believe coach and player are on the same page now.:)

He just kicked like he always does, deep and long.

BB should have told him to kick it higher but not so much difference. Don't be too hard on BB, though. After a few games of 30-yard-Walter, BB forgot that he had a punter who could kick it twice as far. It's a cinch he never told Walter to make sure he didn't out-kick the coverage.

Besides, when is kicking too far a problem? Drive the PR back with a deep kick and then tackle him. The issue isn't that Sauerbron kicked it deep. The problem is that our open field tackling sucked.

BB doesnt criticize players in public . thats why he came back in the press conf and took the blame...people always wonder why players play hard for someone like BB who is perceived as a dull non parcells like person..one of the main reasons...he doesnt criticize his players publicly...the sauerbrun incident was out of character a bit for BB

Next time, smack him up side of the head before he kicks and tell him not to out-kick the coverage. Walter never had this problem because of his 5 sec. hang time, not his short kicks.

I don't believe he truly out-kicked the coverage because within half a second after Jones got the ball, there were 4 Pats players standing around flat-footed, watching Jones go by them.

On the TD return, no one was within 15 yds of him when he caught the ball.

Nah, there was plenty of coverage but no-one got Jones.

Personally next weekend against the Jets I think they should angle the kicks to the sidelines and don't allow Justin Miller to return any punts.

that's a great point. i live in NYC and Giants fans are getting sick and effing tired of Tom Coughlin's histrionics on the sidelines. BB usually stands in stark contrast to this and he was a class act taking the hit at his press conference.

BB is amazing, the guy is like a robot in front of the microphone. He has all pre-programmed answers. He must rehearse the stuff as he never seems to get emotional and every answer has a certain reaction meant.

Could, could Belichick be a Cylon?!?

I think that BB ordered him to kick away from Jones before the game. Otherwise why would he go off on the guy? He would have gone off on the entire unit.

I don't think that the punter will disobey another one of BB orders.:D

Plenty of coverage forced outside of its coverage plan is about as effective as no coverage. Seeley's units have consistently had gunners hemming in returners before they get the ball this season. John nailed it when he said no one was near Pacman on the deep kick - unless you think BB's immediate reaction on the sideline was just a delayed reaction from last week's game?

Look, I watched the replay too - there was plenty of coverage. Belichick, IMO, was upset because he wanted it out of bounds as Jones can beat coverage if he gets a step or two to make a move.

It was a great return. It seemed like he paused with the ball for 2 or 3 seconds after the ball was fielded and actually waited for the opening instead of just taking off with it. This was all Jones who had the athletism and vision to make it happen.

Our special teams is not the indestructible machine it was 2 years ago but I think it is still one of the best out there. I think this is the 2nd or 3rd st's td given up by us this season. Hopefully we've got it worked out by next week.

I totally agree with that. Well said...punt the damn ball deep and put the wood to the returner. Unless, like Walter, you cant kick it deep...then angle it to corners.

Our STs have scared me a bit as of late.

I would say outkicking the coverage and giving up a TD would be one instance.

I believe BB agrees.
