Patriots Release CB Leigh Bodden
By: Ian Logue

A big surprise was announced on Friday morning, with*Monique Walker of the Boston Globe reporting that the Patriots have decided to release veteran defensive back Leigh Bodden....

Back to the original subject matter ... Ian Rapoport is suggesting that the crux of the decision was that Bodden had been surpassed by Arrington in terms of performance, and was not embracing the role as the team's third cornerback.

BostonHerald.com - Blogs: Rap Sheet»» Explaining why the Patriots released veteran CB Leigh Bodden…

Bodden didn’t totally embrace the move to the “star” — or slot corner — position, and his lukewarm response was telling. He did it, he didn’t cause trouble, but it was clear he didn’t embrace it. And when that happened, when it was clear Bodden wasn’t thrilled with what he was asked to do, coach Bill Belichick doesn’t embrace when guys don’t embrace what they do. So, if Bodden was going to sit on the bench and not play in the slot, that’s a bad locker room move.

You can’t have a veteran, making a ton of money, sitting on the bench. It runs the risk he’ll complain and be a divisive force. So, Bodden was released to go to a team who may use him differently.

And now, the Patriots move on.

Here are some of Greg Bedard's thoughts; though he also mentions Bodden not being thrilled with his role, he thinks it was more about performance and the roster spot being better utilized on another player.

Analysis of Bodden release - Extra Points - Boston.com

  • Bodden didn’t play special teams. If you're not one of the top two CBs on the team, that's an issue.

  • Bodden clearly wasn’t thrilled with his role on this team, but I have no evidence he was a problem.

  • The first thought that came to mind when I heard of Bodden’s release was when I saw him in the locker room yesterday, he wasn’t walking well. I think health has been an issue for him and it has affected his play. Whether he wanted to sit and the team thought he should play or vice versa, I don’t know. I find it curious that his agent, Alvin Keels, put out a statement that said Bodden was healthy. Obviously it's an issue.

  • If Bodden isn't injured, then he's on the downside of his career. He was not effective.

  • The bottom line is this: Bodden was not the same player he had been even early in training camp, whether that was because of injury or some other factor, we don’t know. But the fact of the matter was he had lost a step. When Ras-I Dowling is healthy, the pecking order would be: Arrington, McCourty, Dowling and then Bodden or Molden.

There's much more to the article but those are some of his key points.

You need to learn how to curate better. In this most places this would be considered spam.
Just as a matter of interest, what do you think "curate" means?

Billy boy must have this thing all figured out. We have no talent in the secondary. Of course this is backed up by poor DL play and poor LB play. THis is going to be a long season that ends up prematurely.

This coming from a guy who doesn't really watch the games. The D-line actually played well. The LBers, not so much. Spikes out there on passing downs is always a mistake.

BTW, Chung and McCourty are talented. Both played very well today. The problem is the rest of the secondary. Ihedigbo, Brown, Barrett, and Molden are special teamers who should not be playing full time. Adams looked half decent out there in the 2nd half.

BTW, why did you post in this thread and not the post game one?

molden was awful, he shouldn't even be on the field

Many LOLS will be had if its the Giants who claim him off waivers and start him next week.

Molden is a disaster thus far, in the early going this move looks mad sketchy.

Let's see what the plan is going forward in the secondary.

So we cut a declining Bodden, who we have already paid for, in order to play Molden and Adams?

Bodden has now cleared waivers. Nobody claimed him and so the Patriots are on the hook for his salary.

He is free to sign anywhere he wants, now.

Where ever he ends up, I expect him to play well. Not a smart move by BB
IMO.

If any team wanted him to be a starting corner, they would've claimed him. Now he's stuck in a situation where he doesn't want to be a backup and isn't good enough to be a starter. Soulds like Adalius Thomas all over again.

He's really stuck. He will get backup money for being a backup PLUS the money from the patriots for being a starter.

He doesn't want to be a backup though. That's apparently a big reason he wanted out.
