Teams coming off the Bye Week are 1 and 5 this year.

Also, teams MUST have 4 straight days off during the bye week..

Are players "locked out" during those four days or can they come in for extra work if they want? Any idea?

This means absolutely nothing.

This, on the other hand, sort of takes away from the importance of the bye week.
Not really though. First it ensures rest, which is a big part of the bye week.
Seondly, if there were a game they would have a walk through on Friday (unnecessary if there is no game) Saturday pretty much off, play Sunday and Monday off. (I'm not exactly certain of the schedule so that may not be 100% correct) So 4 days off in a row incuding bye game day doesn't really take much away.

The Pats have traditionally given them at least 3 or 4 days off in the past so this isn't a big deal.

2 things......

1) BB has traditionally given 4 straight days off in the bye week.

2) Check BB's record of the bye week.

Nuff said.

Lucky for us we're playing the Steelers in week 8 then. ;)

Philidelphia @ Washington (PHI)

St. Louis @ Greenbay (GB)

Houston @ Baltimore (BAL)

Cleveland @ Oakland (OAK)

Dallas @ New England (NE)

Those are the teams that came off bye's.

I'm not trying to take away from the importance of the rest, but they lose the advantage of extra time to prepare (can they go to the facility and film study? Not sure about these rules.), although I'm sure Bill will still be game planning.

Looking at those games, the team that should have won actually won other than maybe the Eagles. The Rams suck going up against the best team in football. Houston is missing Andre Johnson and Mario Williams against arguably the best team in the AFC or second best. Cleveland is mediocre and Oakland has been decent. New England is the other team worthy of the best team in the AFC claim against an up and down Cowboys.

I don't know if you really can read too much into it. If there were some upsets in the bunch, then it might mean something.

Its still 2 weeks to prepare. All you are losing is walkthrough for a game that doesnt exist, game day and 2 normal days off.
Its 2 pretty much full 'workweeks'

Ahh, you're right. I just saw this weeks schedule. They will practice on Tuesday and Wednesday and start their "break" on Thursday. So, they're basically only missing one practice.

and there are zero rules aganst a player do extra film work on his own time and i would bet my life more then 10 players on this team do that

And if they are back on Monday (the 5th day) instead of Tuesday, as in a normal week, they gain an extra practice as well.

Two things are supposed to happen in bye week:

1. the players heal up, both injuries fatigued muscles
2. the coaches get time to do more in depth roster management and planning for upcoming opponents.

Everything else is gravy.

Too small a sample, especially when that sample includes StL, Miami, (both winless and witless) Dallas, Wash, clev and Balt. Those teams' combined record is 11-19.

Gruden was saying last night that he thinks this rule really hurt the Phins, because they had to put in a new QB and if he were the coach, he would have had a bunch more practices with the new QB.

I doubt that the 4 days off in a row hurts more than the limited practice in pads. I think that is what is really going to hamper the development of some younger guys.

You could give the Rams 2 years off and they were not going to beat the Packers.

I thought that the Cowboys pretty much played their best game and got 4 turnovers, shut down Welker and Gronkowski....and still LOST!!!

That is when you know you have a good team, when the other team pretty much does everything they wanted to, and you still beat them.....

I think this bye is coming about the right time for the Pats. they played easily thier best game of the year last year in Pittsburg. The bye will allow everyone to get healthy. I can only ASSuME that Mayo, Vollomer, Made of Glass, et al will be back. I think that they two roster cuts yesterday bode well for the PUP guys. It would be great to get Faulk back, it has been so long, I think we all forget how clutch that guy is.

And if they are back on Monday (the 5th day) instead of Tuesday, as in a normal week, they gain an extra practice as well.

The CBA rule that concerns me most are the limited number of practices in pads.. 11 can be held up to 1 November and after that only 3 practices in pads can occur.

That needs to be changed..

...

This, on the other hand, sort of takes away from the importance of the bye week.

I thought a big point of the Bye for the players was to get some rest and a break from an intense, beginning in pre season and training camp, six month routine. I have zero problem with players hitting the beach or the links for a few days of R&R with friends, girlfriends, whatever...
