OT: Look for the NFL to create rules to stop injuries on the sidelines

Some major injuries today and they weren't to players. Sean Payton broke his leg and tore his MCL on one play when a player was tackled into him and Jimmy Lake, defensive backs coach of the Bucs, tore his patella tendon in a more embarrassing way celebrating an INT.

It looks that it is more dangerous standing on the sidelines than on the field today.

We are talking about the reactionary NFL. Look for the field to be totally enclosed like they have in Hockey by next season.

It looks that it is more dangerous standing on the sidelines than on the field today.

I don't see any evidence that it is more dangerous these days than before. I remember in a Packers-Cowboys game about 15 years ago a coach got hit and fell backwards and hit his head HARD against a bench. He had to go to the hospital and it was a serious injury.

Wait! I'm being serious. One added benefit is that they might implement a penalty box and power play to the NFL. Five minutes for roughing the passer. Two minutes for pass interference. It would be awesome.

Really, I was being more sarcastic than anything. Of course the NFL is not going to enclose the field.

That said, the NFL is reactionary about isolated incidences like this and I wouldn't be shocked if they ended up implementing a a yard two buffer between the field and the sideline where no one can stand during a play.

Wasn't there a coach injured earlier in the day as well??? I thought that they said that not long after Payton was taken in to get x-rays done?

See, I was partly right! But, it would be dumb to change the game just because Sean Payton can't get out the way. He would probably agree.

I'm not disagreeing with you that it is dumb to change the rules because of one incident. It is also dumb to change the horse collar tackle rule because one player was injuring players because he was pulling ball carriers down by the collar (Now known as the Roy Williams Rule). It is also dumb to make taking off your helmet after a play while you are on the field a 15 yard penalty because one player did it after every play (Now known as the Emmitt Smith rule). The NFL does make a lot of stupid reactionary rules.

I don't think the league will overreact because of this, but their past history clearly shows that they very well might.
