Dan Wheldon, the 2011 Indianapolis 500 winner and one of the most popular drivers in open-wheel racing, died Sunday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in a horrific multi-car crash on Lap12 of the IndyCar Series season finale.

Officials decided to call the race, but the drivers did a five-lap tribute to Wheldon. IndyCar Series CEO Randy Bernard made the official announcement of Wheldon's death without further comment.

One of the most tragic days in sports history

That is terrible. Know nothing about the sport or their drivers, but it is always a tragedy when someone dies in a sporting event.

Saw this on Facebook.. Wheldon was one of the better drivers.. It is definitely a sad day..

RIP and prayers for his wife, kids and family through this tough time.

Thought I recognised the name - he's British. RIP Dan, my thoughts are with your family at this terrible time.

Out of a stupid sport, come stupid accidents.

RIP nonetheless.

Maybe instead of editing your post, you should have just deleted it.

Prayers to family, rest in peace.

Just a horrible and unfortunate tragedy. He was much liked here in the Indy area for obvious reasons. RIP Dan, my thoughts are with you and family.

Saw my first Indy race at Baltimore this year and it was quite exciting. Tragic news today. Thoughts and prayers to Wheldon's family.

The death of anyone during a sporting event is disconcerting and I had the misfortune of witnessing it live as I was flipping between games this afternoon even though I never watch indy car racing. Now it reminds me of Ayrton Senna. RIP both.

A sad turn of events for one of Britain's finest. God Speed, young man, God Speed.

For those that condemn his choice of sport, dare yourself to do something more daring and less rewarding than his. And kindly leave a kiss on each of his children's cheek's as you bravely insult their Father. Dan Weldon was a hell of a man. Thank You, Dan, for all of your efforts.

Sad news.

But with all due respect this does not belong in the main forum, even as OT, especially on game day.

Mods, please move.

Please don't move. It is certainly a relevant topic in sports today and something with an "OT" that should stay for a little bit.

Not a fan of nascar but, very sad. RIP.

RIP Dan Wheldon. Racing has come a long long way in terms of Safety which is why this was so shocking to me. Condolences to his family and loved ones.
