Giants mull prying Pioli from Pats

Scott Pioli, one of the architects of the New England Patriots' dynasty, is emerging as a wild-card player in the Giants' search for a new general manager. But the Giants have not ruled out hiring an internal candidate, such as VP of player evaluation Chris Mara or director of player personnel Jerry Reese.

The 41-year-old Pioli, in his seventh season as the Pats' vice president of player personnel, is still under contract in New England, but according to two people familiar with the Giants' GM search, the Giant owners have discussed contacting him before they make a hire. According to several sources, Pioli - from Washingtonville, N.Y., about 60 miles north of Manhattan - has always coveted the Giants job.

If the Giants get serious about Pioli, they could only interview him after the Patriots are eliminated from the playoffs or in the week after the wild-card round. According to NFL rules, the Giants could hire him without having to compensate the Patriots if they give him "final say" over all personnel matters - something he does not have in New England.

However, according to league source, the Patriots could try to present a reasonably strong case to block Pioli from leaving, though it's hard to believe they would if he really wanted to go. The Giants also could offer the Patriots compensation, such as a lo

That's great news. ANOTHER key person will be leaving or at least considering leaving the Pats front office or coaching staff. As I mentioned before, how many assistants and FO personell left those 49, Steelers and Cowboy teams??
Not even getting into players. It gets tougher and tougher every season.

Does SP have any kids? Would he want to uproot his family after 7-years in NE??

Is is all about the money?? Couldn't Kraft offer him a raise if it comes down to it? This does not count under the cap obviously.

One interesting side note is, that as far as I can see, the Patriots do not technically have a 'GM'. Jonathon Kraft is President. Ray Sullivan is Chief Operating Officer, but I don't think we have ever heard that position, or any other top management positions, as having anything to do with the actual game operations.

That's where we have to hope Belichick is signed beyond 2006. If so he can't go or will require compensation.

You've got that right. But if, for whatever reason, Belichick has wandering eyes - better to have him under contract than not.

i think BB is far more valuable for us than pioli obviously.How Pioli's loss will effect us (if it happens) depends on how many of his scout people he takes with him.thats were i think the pats will get effected most. BB and pioli well together but pioli wont be able to get all the type of players we have and have them play same without BB.

I may be mistaken ... but I am 90% sure Pioli has a job title and duty that puts him above GM. He cannot be taken away from other teams with lacontract language issues ... like full control because he is officially a higher job title than that.

I'm pretty sure he would have to be named a VP or President to be considered an upward move ... time to do research on my memory of this.

No kidding...Not to mention the part of the sentence that precedes it:

Pioli is free to go to any club willing to give him full control. He turned that opportunity down in 2005 when Paul Allen offered him $15M to come save his franchise from the inept GM'ing of Mike Holmgren. Here that control ultimately lies with BB, but he gives Scott tremendous leeway in personnel matters. He has long said that he could not do Scott's job, nor could Scott do his. It's a partnership. The Giants toadies are merely flattering themselves by insinuating that somehow (while reversing authority) getting the rare opportunity to again work for the Mara's (albeit totally f'ed up) storied franchise would somehow trump building a dynasty together from scratch and then proving to the naysayers you can maintain it and your principles in the salary cap era.

Do any of you really buy this or are you just intent on finding something else to kvetch about for the new year?

every coach needs a QB to suceed. why would BB leave brady and go and coach for a manning..???
i can see this happening if BB had taken a few yrs off from the job like vermeil,parcells but right now he has brady, a system which works for him...why at this point would he tank this and try and coach up eli manning ?

If there was a job opening at a NYC McDonald's the New York media would write about how Bill Gates was on his way to interview. It's completely ******ed the way the NY media and idiot sports callers seem to think everyone's dream is to do their same job in NY.

The fact of the matter is that Pioli may very well leave but if he did he'd likely be doing it to stake out his own reputation and to build his own organization. So why the hell would he bring Bill Belichick along since we can safely assume that Belichick wouldn't leave the Patriots to take a job with lesser control in New York.
