Thoughts on James Ihedigbo

I thought it would be pertinent to have a discussion about S James Ihedigbo who had his first career start this afternoon against his former team.

What did everybody think of his performance today? Just considering the pass defense today which let up only 166 yards through the air, it's encouraging, but that doesn't give us the whole picture. I remember after watching a few Jets games last year that I thought he was an effective blitzer, and we saw a little today.

I hope he didn't just start because it was against the Jets. I doubt BB would do something like that.

Barrett and Brown being terrible may have had something to do with it. Aside from looking awful on the Holmes TD I don't remember seeing him do much.

Seemed to be in position and delivered hits. Overall nice effort I thought. Hard to really evaluate him since Sanchez really isn't a "threaten the safeties" kind of guy. Unless "safeties" is slang for "17 year old high school girls". Then Sanchez would definitely be a threat.

Next week is a much bigger challenge defending the deep ball. Lets see if Ihedigbo has earned regular snaps against the 'Boys.

No big mistake? He failed to cover as a safety against Holmes but it was also Kyle's fault too.
I think he is decent and a work in progress. I think i do prefer him over Barrett.

I thought his coverage on the Holmes TD was terrible, and he didn't stick out at any other time. That might be a good thing; it might not be.

Me too, although I think we'll have a better gauge on what he can and can't do after the Cowboys game.

Josh Barrett was a ghost out there most of the time. The times that you did see him, he was usually trailing a receiver (with the ball in his hand) by about 5+ yards. Ihedigbo is someone you would ideally want as a back-up at this point, but he was certainly better than Barrett and Brown have looked.

The only negaive play I can think of is the Holmes TD (that was just terrible btw). While I still don't feel completely comfortable with him starting, it's better than Barrett.

Ihedigbo is someone you would ideally want as a back-up at this point, but he was certainly better than Barrett and Brown have looked.

Is SS his more natural position? Seems like he should be backing up Chung ideally, but I'm not really sure to be honest.

I know we're five weeks into the season, but I still wouldn't be surprised to see one of our cornerbacks slide over to FS (a la Eugene Wilson) before the season is over -- perhaps after the bye week as our secondary gradually returns to health.

I don't know who you saw, but Josh Barrett was inactive today, so it wasn't him.

James (so thats his first name) did not have amazingly negative plays like the other two guys had throughout the season...

however, he had two bad plays, one was the one mentioned before about holmes, the other was when he was faked out by Sanchez on the TD to the no name WR dude, if he had not balked at the pump fake, he would have sacked sanchez, instead of having him throw for a TD.....


but only two plays, and they were marginally bad, so i also prefer him over the other two at this point

As a UMass alum, I'm biased towards him. He's definitely a special teams asset. I think he looked ok at safety today. Definitely no worse than Brown or Barrett.

LaRon Landry and Michael Griffin are the big name free agents. Then there is also Tyvon Branch from the Raiders (he did a decent job against Gronkowski) and Dashon Goldson who had a workout with the Patriots prior to resigning with the 49ers. Here is a list of safeties who are currently set to become free agents next year.

I thought Ihedigbo had an okay game, but then again at this point my standards for safety play are very low.

On a different note, as bad as Brown and Barrett have been, Jarrard Page has been so much worse for the Eagles. At least there's 1 former Pats safety that I'm not missing.
