Is Del Rio just a sore loser, or are these comments more serious than that?

I wonder why this is not in the national news, ie, espn, etc.
doesn't seem to be getting any press

There is alot of frustration with the roughing the QB calls every week ... it seems they are untouchable ... when the QB runs, the defense expects they will slide, but when they don't it usually ends up as a 1st down. I agree with the premise that if a QB doesn't slide he is fair game ... to advocate spearing is another matter. Ingram knew exactly what he was doing and obviously he got some encouragement from his HC. It was Ingram who was called for the roughing call earlier in the game when he nailed Brady well after the throw was gone.

Del Rio should be fined and suspended for the last game of the season!

Ingram was the guy who was called for a late, but ticky tack, hit on Brady. I must agree with Jax that that call was bogus. I would have been furious if it was called against the Pats. HOWEVER, you do not repay a stupid call by the officials with an illegal hit intended to hurt Brady. It seems obvious from the comments afterwards that Ingram had a green light to take a shot if he got his chance, and he didn't waste it. Both player and coach should be fined and suspended for the final game for their illegal shenanigans. I couldn't believe the trash that came out of Del Rio's mouth; this is an NFL coach?

Typically players get fined for helmet to helmet contact. I wonder if Seymour gets fined for his contact with Garrard. If so, and Ingrim and/or Del Rio do not get fined, there should be an investigation.

Just because Ingram's hit was not hard does not disqualify it as unnecessary roughing the passer. He took MULTIPLE steps toward the passer after the pass was thrown and initiated contact, shoving the passer.

Aside from that, there is a problem with all the protect the QB rules in the game. I don't have the magic solution though.

I was shocked at Del Rio's classless and stupid rant but then I remembered Freddie Smerlas' words to Steve DeOssie pre-game, "He's (Del Rio) just a stupid linebacker".

Helmet to helmet calls may take place in the heat of battle and be made erroneously - there was a good replay on NFL Network's game replay showing daylight between the two helmets the entire time - as I recall the game, Sey was called for roughing the passer on a late hit, not helmet to helmet, and even if he was called for an H to H, the replays would prove there was no offense in that regard.

The spearing on the other hand, it's on the tape and Dul Rio is on the record, pay up dummies.

Were I Ingram, I'd ask Del Rio to pay my fine for me after his big mouth attracted league officials necessitating action.

Then, I'd get cut. :)

I lost all respect for that guys coaching ability back in 2003 I think when the Pats needed the Jags to beat the Steelers in order to help their playoff seeding. He totally mismanaged the clock and the game resulting in a Steelers win.

I had mentioned that the coaching matchup last weekend was heavily in the Pats favor and that was clearly the case.

These comments just reinforce this fact.

I hate to be a repetitive poster, but given how I feel about spearing, and how scandelous Del Rios' remarks were, I have to chime in.

I can believe the response was out of frustration for a guy who sees his job slipping down the tubes, but that isn't an excuse. He should be fined, suspended, then FIRED, in that order. Fined and suspended for the comment, then fired for the piss poor job he's done in Jax. He has had some of the best talent in the league over the last few years and has done less with that talent than most anyone could have. (maybe with the exception of Denny Green) BTW- Kudos to the Jags GM who has done His part in getting Del Rio the talent.

yeah and Mike Tice step up to HC of the JJ

Spearing is a major infraction, however, it is something that happens, inadvertantly, during the course of many games. Defensive players are moving towards a ball carrier and begin to make a move directly for a hit.... and the helmet sometimes can make contact with the player. If it does, as in this case, it is, by the rules, spearing, but in most cases it is not intentional.

Just as roughing the passer, in most cases, is not intentional...it is just the momentum of a player that cant be stopped just because a whistle may hve blown.

However, for a coach to condone a major infraction is not within the rules and thereby a punishment to Del Rio must be handed out.

If he had said that the incident was unintentional, but regrets that it happened, that would be acceptable..but to condone it.... no way.
It looked to me like Ingram went out of his way to blast Brady with his helmet. It's a lot easier and more natural for a defender to come in and lead with the shoulder on that type of play. The defender can also break his own neck spearing like that. When do fines come out?

I'll have to recheck the NFL Rule Book. But, I understand that "spearing " is illegal no mater if it's a QB, RB, TE, WR or any other player. It's using the helmet as a weapon.
It is totally illegal. Ironically, a major part of the NFL rationale behind the rule is the safety of the person doing the spearing - it is extremely dangerous and can result in severe spinal injury.

Not only that, but I thought it was border line to be called a late hit anyway. Brady was completely down and Ingram seemed to me to have time to avoid the hard hit. I'm surprised at the non-call on either issue in the game.

this why BB is BB and del rio is just another coach...BB never talks about calls and non-calls and he once mentioned this season on WEEI that it has been yrs since he sent any plays after the game to league to review disputed calls like polian does...he takes them for what it is ..offers no comment and moves on...

Late hit no, Tommy was going down in a head first dive and was fair game for a hit, the spear may or may not have been inadvertent, but was a dangerous play nontheless and should have been flagged and now hopefully fined.

I must be the only one who agrees with Del Rio then. If a QB doesn't slide, he's fair game and you knock the crap out of him.

Coaches say things like this all the time on the sideline. I like that Del Rio didn't pull any punches. This is football for cryin' out loud!

Did you read any other posts before you wrote what you did.??????

No one here is against knocking the crap out of the quarterback,LEGALLY, as in a hard tackle, but when the tackler leads with the top of the helmet, that is SPEARING, and is ILLEGAL,

And when a coach condones and openly suggests illegal tactics then that coach should be fined

With all due respect, Murph, Del Rio used the word "Spear". It wasn't just a slip of the tongue. It was WRITTEN on the Jaguars website.

In the play, Brady was indeed SPEARED by Ingram. No one is contending that it was "late" or that he should have been "softly tapped", etc. Leading with the crown of the helmet on ANY player is a penalty and a fine-able offense. For a HEAD COACH of the NFL to advocate it IN WRITING is off the map.

He did the same thing two years ago (2005) when they missed the playoffs. I couldn't find the quote but to paraphrase (with license) "Those Colts are so lucky they don't have to play us, we are big and strong no one can beat us. Did I mention we are big and strong?"

This is his best quote "“A chance to finish with a winning record for the third year in a row. It would be good to accomplish that,” Del Rio said"

One playoff game in three years and a 28-3 loss to show for it, and that is something to be proud of? Crazy...

The article in question

Clearly Del Rio is reacting to the pressure of being washed out of the playoffs after a less than stellar season when the Jags were expected to be competitive with the league's elite teams. Which is no excuse for advocating an illegal play.

The QB protection rules are Tiny Testes rules that have gone too far creating a poor product on the field, we'll have to see if the Polian committee reacts to the complaints and clarifies things for the officials.

I expect both Ingram and Del Rio to be fined. I do not hold the spearing against the rookie yet, but I am now very curious to know if Del Rio gave some specific guidance to his defense in the event of another Brady scramble.

I read the article (it was written by Vic Ketchman by the way) - Del Rio's choice of words may not have been ideal, but they are hardly worth creating a buzz over. For the NFL to fine Del Rio only would only stand to reinforce the "prima donna" type attitude it has towards overprotecting the quarterback.

It's a hard hitting game. Fining Ingram for an illegal hit falls within the rules, fining Del Rio for saying Brady got what was coming to him is absurd.

I think we should be applauding Tom for an gutsy run and dive, not complaining about what some opposing coach said after the fact.

So teaching his players to use an illegal technique (spearing) that could:

a) paralyze the tackler
and
b) severely hurt or paralyze the player (I don't care if it's a QB or a DT - -the position doesn't matter)

is OK?

"After the fact"? Hey, J'ville plays again this Sunday. His players now have heard him advocating "spearing". What message does that send out to them for the next game?

Murph, you're one of my favorite posters here and I love your webcast show (and one of these days WILL make sure to get down to the pub in Alexandria), but I really don't get this.
