It's easy, and only takes a few moments. There is alot of frustration with the roughing the QB calls every week ... it seems they are untouchable ... when the QB runs, the defense expects they will slide, but when they don't it usually ends up as a 1st down. I agree with the premise that if a QB doesn't slide he is fair game ... to advocate spearing is another matter. Ingram knew exactly what he was doing and obviously he got some encouragement from his HC. It was Ingram who was called for the roughing call earlier in the game when he nailed Brady well after the throw was gone.
Del Rio should be fined and suspended for the last game of the season!
Helmet to helmet calls may take place in the heat of battle and be made erroneously - there was a good replay on NFL Network's game replay showing daylight between the two helmets the entire time - as I recall the game, Sey was called for roughing the passer on a late hit, not helmet to helmet, and even if he was called for an H to H, the replays would prove there was no offense in that regard.Typically players get fined for helmet to helmet contact. I wonder if Seymour gets fined for his contact with Garrard. If so, and Ingrim and/or Del Rio do not get fined, there should be an investigation.
The spearing on the other hand, it's on the tape and Dul Rio is on the record, pay up dummies.
yeah and Mike Tice step up to HC of the JJI hate to be a repetitive poster, but given how I feel about spearing, and how scandelous Del Rios' remarks were, I have to chime in.
I can believe the response was out of frustration for a guy who sees his job slipping down the tubes, but that isn't an excuse. He should be fined, suspended, then FIRED, in that order. Fined and suspended for the comment, then fired for the piss poor job he's done in Jax.
It looked to me like Ingram went out of his way to blast Brady with his helmet. It's a lot easier and more natural for a defender to come in and lead with the shoulder on that type of play. The defender can also break his own neck spearing like that. When do fines come out?Spearing is a major infraction, however, it is something that happens, inadvertantly, during the course of many games. Defensive players are moving towards a ball carrier and begin to make a move directly for a hit.... and the helmet sometimes can make contact with the player. If it does, as in this case, it is, by the rules, spearing, but in most cases it is not intentional.
Just as roughing the passer, in most cases, is not intentional...it is just the momentum of a player that cant be stopped just because a whistle may hve blown.
However, for a coach to condone a major infraction is not within the rules and thereby a punishment to Del Rio must be handed out.
If he had said that the incident was unintentional, but regrets that it happened, that would be acceptable..but to condone it.... no way.
It is totally illegal. Ironically, a major part of the NFL rationale behind the rule is the safety of the person doing the spearing - it is extremely dangerous and can result in severe spinal injury.I'll have to recheck the NFL Rule Book. But, I understand that "spearing " is illegal no mater if it's a QB, RB, TE, WR or any other player. It's using the helmet as a weapon.
Late hit no, Tommy was going down in a head first dive and was fair game for a hit, the spear may or may not have been inadvertent, but was a dangerous play nontheless and should have been flagged and now hopefully fined. It is totally illegal. Not only that, but I thought it was border line to be called a late hit anyway. Brady was completely down and Ingram seemed to me to have time to avoid the hard hit. I'm surprised at the non-call on either issue in the game.
I must be the only one who agrees with Del Rio then. If a QB doesn't slide, he's fair game and you knock the crap out of him.
Coaches say things like this all the time on the sideline. I like that Del Rio didn't pull any punches. This is football for cryin' out loud!

The article in question

Clearly Del Rio is reacting to the pressure of being washed out of the playoffs after a less than stellar season when the Jags were expected to be competitive with the league's elite teams. Which is no excuse for advocating an illegal play.
The QB protection rules are Tiny Testes rules that have gone too far creating a poor product on the field, we'll have to see if the Polian committee reacts to the complaints and clarifies things for the officials.
I expect both Ingram and Del Rio to be fined. I do not hold the spearing against the rookie yet, but I am now very curious to know if Del Rio gave some specific guidance to his defense in the event of another Brady scramble.
With all due respect, Murph, Del Rio used the word "Spear". It wasn't just a slip of the tongue. It was WRITTEN on the Jaguars website.
In the play, Brady was indeed SPEARED by Ingram. No one is contending that it was "late" or that he should have been "softly tapped", etc. Leading with the crown of the helmet on ANY player is a penalty and a fine-able offense. For a HEAD COACH of the NFL to advocate it IN WRITING is off the map.
I read the article (it was written by Vic Ketchman by the way) - Del Rio's choice of words may not have been ideal, but they are hardly worth creating a buzz over. For the NFL to fine Del Rio only would only stand to reinforce the "prima donna" type attitude it has towards overprotecting the quarterback.
It's a hard hitting game. Fining Ingram for an illegal hit falls within the rules, fining Del Rio for saying Brady got what was coming to him is absurd.
I think we should be applauding Tom for an gutsy run and dive, not complaining about what some opposing coach said after the fact.
