Is Del Rio just a sore loser, or are these comments more serious than that?

Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio took the matter one step further, suggesting on the website that Brady got what he deserved for not sliding in the first half, when defenders backed off because they thought he would slide.

"They should have speared him then," Del Rio said. "You go face-first and you're a runner."

So an NFL coach is advocating "spearing" as a way to punish quarterbacks who run? What's next, advocating full face mask twisting? How about clipping?

Should he be called out on this, or should it be ignored as a sore loser's comments in the heat of the moment?

By saying that publicly, shows what an absolute fool he is, can anyone imagine BB saying anything like this in a public forum?? Maybe he will pay the fine for him when it comes down from the NFL office??

Del Rio is another middle of the road HC, who will probably not be in Jacksonville too much longer.. there are tons of has beens just like him on the coaching staffs of teams like Washington, Minnesota and other mediocre teams.

That comment indicates total lack of class. There's no excuse to advocating an illegal play such as spearing which poses serious risk of injury to BOTH tackler and the tackled player.

Fine if Brady goes headfirst, then tackle him, he's an eligible runner. But play inside the rules. Del Rio should have to issue a public apology for that type of comment. Sorry but as a coach in the NFL you represent the league as well as your own team. Jack Del Rio should be ASHAMED of himself.

I don't agree with Del Rio saying they should have speared him...but he does have a point. Defenders will tend to back off if they think the QB will slide (ala Brian Urlacker) but when they don't, they are "fair game". Brady is not Vince Young or Michael Vick where he can outrun 9 of the 11 defenders on the field. Diving for the first down may be good "heads up" "hard nosed" football. But..is it worth losing our franchise QB over it?? IMO..no.

The protection of QBs has gone too far. It results in ridiculous plays like the Urlacher one where the defender is so afraid to draw a roughing penalty that a quarterback who chooses to run has an advantage.

That doesn't mean the guys deserve to be hit illegally when they do get hit though.

Del Rio is just frustrated that his team is out of the playoffs. He chooses to take out his frustration in a classless manner. Life goes on.

Del Rio was the star of the NFL Network show where they took the cameras behind the scenes of their training camp twoyears ago. I think it was called Jaguar Summer, or something like that.

2) Yes, the QB should hit if he runs and then slides, even it draws a penalty. I think that this is good defensive strategy, akin to hitting a receiver hard who comes over the middle. However, advocating spearing is out of line.

probably he is very very frustrated but you shoud really avoid such bad declarations...he is an head coach...

There is alot of frustration with the roughing the QB calls every week ... it seems they are untouchable ... when the QB runs, the defense expects they will slide, but when they don't it usually ends up as a 1st down. I agree with the premise that if a QB doesn't slide he is fair game ... to advocate spearing is another matter. Ingram knew exactly what he was doing and obviously he got some encouragement from his HC. It was Ingram who was called for the roughing call earlier in the game when he nailed Brady well after the throw was gone.

Del Rio should be fined and suspended for the last game of the season!

If in fact this is what Del Rio said, the NFL needs to come down on him. Suggesting that any player should be "speared" is a very serious comment.

Maybe he didnt say it and that he has picked up a heavy accent, being in Jax for a while, and he said, in reality. that he should be "spared" and it sounded like "speared."

He wrote it on the Teams website...I think it's fair to say the loser meant it!

I'll have to recheck the NFL Rule Book. But, I understand that "spearing " is illegal no mater if it's a QB, RB, TE, WR or any other player. It's using the helmet as a weapon.

Del Rio is a brain dead former defensive player. Not surprised he'd say these things. I wonder if Colvin speared Garrard if he would feel the same way.

Del Rio will be appropriately reprimanded with a 9:30am tee time at one of Jacksonville's finest golf clubs on January 2nd.

I felt bad that the Jags won't get in the playoffs but the Jets will, but this guy deserves a little more vacation time.

I totally agree...besides being a first class loser, the NFL should slap him a BIG fine..NO need to have a coach advocating such things..and warn him as well that if any of his players "spear"..the fine will be doubled!!! THAT is truly embarrassing! I also think maybe a suspension would do good...NEXT year's first game...NOT Sunday..make him pay a bit for the comments..

Tom Brady said he expects Clint Ingram to be fined for the Jaguars rookie linebacker’s crunching hit on Brady in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s game at Alltel Stadium. If Jack Del Rio had his way, Brady would be fined for not making a feet-first slide earlier in the game.

“They should’ve speared him then,” Del Rio said of a Brady head-first dive early in Sunday’s game, when Jaguars defenders backed off Brady because they thought he was going to slide feet-first. “You go face-first and you’re a runner,” Del Rio added.

Clearly Del Rio is reacting to the pressure of being washed out of the playoffs after a less than stellar season when the Jags were expected to be competitive with the league's elite teams. Which is no excuse for advocating an illegal play.

The QB protection rules are Tiny Testes rules that have gone too far creating a poor product on the field, we'll have to see if the Polian committee reacts to the complaints and clarifies things for the officials.

I expect both Ingram and Del Rio to be fined. I do not hold the spearing against the rookie yet, but I am now very curious to know if Del Rio gave some specific guidance to his defense in the event of another Brady scramble.

I'm simply amazed that Del Rio is a HC. Not because of his comments. That was one piss-poor job of coaching on Sunday.

He's angry because his team that stops the rush so well, had no answer for Brady's Patriots. Del Rio got beaten for several first downs by the slowest and most awkward rusher in the NFL. He couldn't pressure Brady, couldn't (hardly) sack him, couldn't intercept him and couldn't tackle him until he'd already hit the ground.
