Sunday afternoon I invited seven of my buddies from Patsfans over to watch the game. All excellent Predict-the-Score players, naturally.
With under 2 minutes to go, the Pats had the game won, which was exciting, but I got more excited when I realized I had a chance to win the Predict the Score contest. "All I need is for the Raiders to stop the Pats here on 4th and Goal from the 1, and then drive 99 yards down the field and score a TD in under a minute." Oddly enough, everyone sitting there with me agreed they too could win the contest if that happened. But they said I had obviously drunk way too much beer to even consider such a thing actually happening.
Well, I agreed with the beer part, so I went to the bathroom to take care of that. When I got back, I found what I had said had actually happened! Brady_to_Moss and Rob0729 were jumping up and down -- with the Janikowski extra point they would be winners at 31-20.
Except the Ghost of Al Davis had other ideas, and decided to go for 2. (Because something actually useful to him, like going for 12 to tie, wasn't allowed under NFL rules.) So then me and Bill B. and fumbrunner and LuthierJr and Raedwulf all stood up and started cheering the Raiders on, we had all predicted 31-21 and with a good 2 point conversion we would split the prize.
Unfortunately, the Raiders didn't sub in Kenny Stabler for the extra point, so Jason Campbell tried it himself and threw it incomplete. We groaned, our chances for victory in the contest shattered.
Then we noticed IndianPat sitting there quietly. "Well, I predicted 31-19" he said, "so I guess that means I won." At which time, being poor losers, we all threw the remainder of our snacks and empty bottles at him.
Congratulations to this week's Predict the Score winner, IndianPat, with a perfect score!
