I agree the injuries, very likely, would have meant a short lived playoff run. However, getting in the playoffs -- even with a very near collapse of epic proportions -- would have made this nothing more than an unremarkable season/a banal season of missed opportunity soon forgotten. And what did they need to do to make the playoffs? I think play .275 winning percentage baseball for the month of September. So they were so injured they couldn't win just barely more than 1 out of every 4 games? Seriously? This deservedly goes into the Choke record book and Hall of Shame. Think about it, the absolute worst team in the league played at a .360 winning percentage. This team had plenty of uninjured talent to win more games than they did in September.
This was a glaring example of a pre-2004 Red Sox team that would choke. When they needed the hit when it counted, they'd hit into a double play. When they needed the ace to throw a good game, he'd get lambasted. When they needed the reliable reliever to close it out? He all of a sudden couldn't strike out a drunk bum off the street.
It is what it is, no need to make excuses. It was an epic choke. Fortunately the demons had been exercised in 2004.......otherwise this would be another and particularly brutal chapter of the Curse of the Babe that would affect the team in upcoming seasons.

Bob....I am a diehard Pats fan, but also a pretty strong Red Sox fan. This collapse was abysmal......one of the lowest moments in red sox history. I think despite the injuries....it all starts at the top. Heck, Terry had MORE injuries last year....but was able to make it to playoffs. I think both Francona and Theo get the axe. Terry is a nice guy...a players manager. that works well for alot of ball clubs but NOT when you have NO LEADERS among the players. Francona LOST this team this year. What a shame.....

Used to be a die hard red sox fan grew up listening to curt gowdy on my transistor radio, but have morphed to more of a casual fan.. the game is way too slow, too technical and has lost a lot of its overall enjoyment.

This collapse is probably the worse of all time.. the question is how do you fix it, you are on the hook for big salaries for a lot of these dudes and cannot just terminate their contracts...

Who do you blame, Theo?? Tito?? or the Players??.. I put this on the shoulders of Theo, he chose the talent.. after the Renteria's, JD Drew's, Bobby Jenks and Carl Crawford acquisitions need to change the shopper of the groceries and use different criteria...

Losing 2 out of 3 to Baltimore in a pivotal series is incredibly pathetic.

The Sox didn't make it to the playoffs last year, either. That's part of the problem. Last year it was clear after Pedroia and Youkilis went down that they weren't going to make it in.

This year was just a slow-moving trainwreck unfold—kind of like the second half of Sunday's game, just over the span of a month instead of a few hours. There were a lot of injuries to important players; Youkilis, Buchholz, Drew, Matsuzaka, and even Gonzalez. But there was still enough talent to make a serious run at it. They just got completely shell-shocked at the end. It was almost like it was a different way to lose every night—a missed ball turns into an inside-the-park HR, a normally reliable reliever blows up, starters come up lame against teams they've historically owned, and so on.

But ultimately, this train wreck is on the pitching staff more than anybody else, and the heads that should roll are on the conditioning staff and the pitching coach.

Please stop with the "curse" BS. Leave that to Shank Shaughnessy. Fact: the RS weren't good enough. They didn't deserve it. As I mentioned on the Red Sox board, I believe that the NY/TB game was the first confirmed instance of a major league team "throwing" a game since the 1919 Black Sox. Not that it would have made a difference down the road.

No, I disagree, the Red Sox were plenty good enough even with the injuries. Look at it this way - last year's team of plug in players/pitchers the last 3 months because of much more crushing injuries won 89 games. One fewer than this year's team.

I don't care who was hurt, they still had plenty of talent to win the 2 more games that would have put them in the playoffs. They had nearly the worst record in the AL in September! Even crappy teams that were mailing it played better. This was a choke job pure and simple, a psychological collapse. And ding dong Tito did nothing to help them. He might have won two WS but right now Francona is not in the same league with Joe Maddon, not even close.
