3 Plays I Simply Cannot Understand- I need an Explanation

3. Losing our 2nd timeout when BB was speaking with the referee


My Comments

1. I have no explanation. Kyle Love was running full speed and hit Fitzpatrick cleanly. It was a perfect form tackle and for the 2nd straight week our player was flagged incorrectly on a clean hit

2. The referee/umpire or whoever threw the flag (very, very late i might add) should be fined/suspended. It was very, very obvious that the Bills player grabbed Sergio Brown, and not the other way around. It was the play of the game as we were up 24-17 and shouldve had the ball at the Bills 20 yard line. Instead the Bills scored TDs on the next two plays and essentially win the game.

3. I have no explanation. I did not see BB the entire conversation but I did not see him signal for a timeout at all during the communication with the referee. If he did, unacceptable. A coach simply must understand the game and not blow a time out when doing so ends the game. If he did not call the timeout, I dont understand how a referee can arbitrarily call a timeout on a team. I do not know a rule that calls for that. My understanding, although maybe limited in some fashion, would be that an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty would be called on the patriots and the bills would be given the ball halfway the distance to the goalline. I am interested to find out an explanation for this post game

These two calls were complete bs......absolute S**T!!!!

I hate to blame a game on the refs (and I'm really not) but that drive was possibly the most important of the game.

Let me explain, refs calls are part of the game and shouldn't matter if you are clearly the better team on the field. What needs explaining is, blowing a 21 point lead against a cut and dried, plain as day less talented team.

Once the TD was called back, Belichick called the time out. He did so because if he had not, the clock would have started to run as soon as the umpire placed the ball on the field for ready to play.

Once the TD was called back, they treat it like a completed catch. Since it was in bounds, the clock would begin once the reply overrule happens.

Belichick called the time out to keep the clock from starting. He was hoping that the Bills would be stupid and try to score on the next play, preserving 1:40 for the Patriots. If he hadn't called time out, the refs would have placed the ball, winded the clock, and it would have ticked down to 1:10 or so.

The reason Belichick was going crazy was that the clock operator had run off a lot of time after the TD call, which was true but ultimately irrelevant.

"Clearly?" There ARE close games. We played like absolute crap and were still the better team. I hate the, "blame it on the refs" mentality too, but #1 looked clean, he may have had a finger on Fitzpatrick's neck.. #2 there was NO DOUBT it was a BS call that allowed the Bills a chance... and #3 looked like the refs just wanted to penalize the Pats (which would mean they had a motive), which I refuse to believe could take place in any professional sports league. But it did fit all the criteria.

Eh whatever, considering the aforementioned stuff, our injuries, some balls bouncing the Bills' way and Brady's inconsistency, I'm not too worried. And I refuse to be like a fan of the other AFC East teams' fans and act like this was the SB.

There are definitely times when this is true, but it sure looked like there was a a bit of contact and then the receiver held onto Brown. Brown had his arms up to try and show he wasn't the one making contact, but he still gets called for PI. :bricks:

We can't blame the game on the officials, our guys most certainly lost the game, but there were definitely some weird calls.

Yup. If the play had occurred outside the final 2 minutes, or if they didn't have the new rule where every TD is reviewed, I'm sure BB never would have challenged.

It was one of those unusual situations where the team hoping for a reversal was the team awarded the TD.

Yep, he got a serious tap on the face mask as Love brought his arm up to tackle him. I think they should do everything they can for player safety, but its getting ridiculous.

The problems I have with this are:

1) The clock was NOT properly reset. It should have been reset to 1:47 because, as you stated, the time keeper let 4 seconds roll off. 1:47. That was the time that the first official called the TD. And, that should have been done as part of the review since the Referee went under the hood. It wasn't done. THAT is why BB was ballistic, in my honest opinion. But he's not going to call out the refs in the media.

2) After a review, teams are supposed to be given a chance to get players on the field without the clock starting, but with the :40 second clock starting. Especially when the clock is supposed to have been reset.

He definitely "hit" Fitzpatrick's face mask, but it was such a minor thing I can't believe they actually called it. There was clearly no intent to hit him in the head and Fitzpatrick was not hurt at all. You can barely see the offense unless you watch it from the right angle in slow motion.

Compare that call to Brady's knee nearly being destroyed last week with no flag and the officiating in the NFL can be a bit mind boggling.

I replayed it twice. Love's arm does not hit Fitzpatrick in the facemask. It hits him across the shoulders.

Also, the rule was changed this year that incidental face masks are NOT supposed to be called.

1. He did hit him in the face mask, when watching the replay the helmet jerks, you can tell there was a blow to the helmet. Replay was a poor angle of his right arm.

2. It was pass interference... he was not playing the ball, he was all over him, whether or not he knew it was underthrown, that was pass interference if I ever saw it.

3. We didn't lose the Timeout, we called it to stop the clock, else the clock would have started immediately.
