The best quarterback in football would plainly assert himself and win a crucial late season game against a dubious opponent. If Brady still is the best, as many here claim on a regular basis, then he has no more time to develop, improve, or refine anything; now is the moment Brady must excel. Brady didn't play well last year in Denver and since then he has not looked anything like the best QB in football in the Pat's big games except for the tilt in Cincy.

This is Brady's time to restate his dominance to the league and his team. At some point a superstar needs to put on his cape and drag everyone around him to a higher level. Brady hasn't had the skill he's used to on the outside, and he has seemed at odds with his OC, but Brady isn't getting paid $17million/yr to be an accomplice in mediocrity. He is being paid to be better than anyone around him.

The truth is that if the Pat's lose this game the players will worry this team isn't headed for another SB, too many doubts will have remained unaswered for that kind of confidence to be instilled. But Brady is the lone player on our squad who has the distinct ability to rise above any supposed limitations and play at a level no one else on the field can match. He's done it before, now is the time to do it again.

He's already done this how many times now...football is a team game buttboy, and while he carried them on his back through the 2005 season, even in the midst of a sports hernia, he was like the boy with his finger in the dike and he couldn't stop Faulk from fumbling because Dillon's injuries forced his overuse, he couldn't stop Saurbrun from spearing the ball on Hobbs ensuing return, he couldn't make Adam's kick for him, couldn't save Troy from bungling a fair catch following that ill advised decision to rush 11...he got picked once in that game (after somebody missed his assignment and let a defender chase him into an ill advised throw Bailey was sitting on). Tell me this, which QB in the league is better and exactly what have they done to prove that to your satisfaction?

You're half right - he isn't getting paid $17M, you must have him confused with Manning. There is nothing wrong with Brady's skills that a decent group of WR's wouldn't fix. He's given no indication he's at odds with his OC, or even the HC who let the WR's he raised from pups walk, and then saddled him with this flotsum and jetsum receiving corps. At times he's appeared a little less than happy with his offense, but that's because they fail to execute - at times to the point they are nearly getting him killed.

He had a better performing supporting cast in 2001, 2003 and 2004, in case you weren't paying attention back then. Sounds more like you're projecting your own impatience or insecurities onto the team, and you will worry and lose confidence (or patience). And frankly that's the mark of a bandwaggon fan. Someone whose interest wanes when his team isn't winning all the time.

Will Josh McDaniels get his head out of his butt and do something different, for a change, and win this game for the Pats. The defense has done their part, now it's time for Josh to step up. Will he? I hope so.

I admire your consistency even though it is getting old and extremely tiring, Pats need to play error free to win this game.. maybe 1 turnover at the most.. minimal penalties. Then the playing field evens and we should win this game easily. As far as Brady goes, he is what he is, the best qb in the league.. when everyone on the offense gets on the same page, the results will be fine. Belichick and McDaniels can design and call the best game plan, however it means little if balls are dropped, penalties are called and turnovers happen.

Sounds like your fully defensive of Brady and fully willing to cast all blame on Belichick and Brady's teammates. Brady can do no wrong? You're fully prepared to blame Belichick, whitewash Brady, exonerate Branch, elevate Givens and deride Caldwell and the rest of his teammates?

Comes across like Brady hero worship to me.

Brady is not having a great year, whatever the reason. As Box points out, his accuracy seems a little off. Something is bothering him, and the fall off in his WR corps may not account for all of it. No doubt his WR's are not as strong bunch this year, no one except a Patriots fanboy is going to confuse either Givens or Branch with an all-pro wide receiver. By any objective measure, Caldwell is an adequate replacement for Givens. So they lost Branch. Branch was often hurt while he was here, Brady always compensated in the past. Branch is the 3rd best receiver in the Seattle group, hardly a bunch of world beaters. Givens was putrid with Tenn before he got hurt. Patten has been nothing since he left here.

In the past, Brady was able to elevate everyone around him, and he's again doing that with Caldwell, but he doesn't seem to have all the magic this year. Maybe that's why the coaches and players didn't concur with the fans that Brady is an all-pro this year. Maybe he really is hurt. Maybe he has off-field distractions we don't know about. Maybe he's depressed. Maybe it's just bad luck.

It's quite possible none of this is Brady's fault, but the attitude that Brady gets all the credit for success and is insulated from blame for failure is not reasonable. Just based on past accomplishment, Brady's going to the Hall of Fame. So is Belichick. You're quite rightly willing to blame Belichick, as HC/GM he is his fully accountable for the failures and success of the program. But Brady is not immune to criticism either.

I didn't like ButtBoy's tone any more than you did -- he may even be a troll -- but it isn't unreasonable to ask if something has been wrong with Brady. More importantly, if Brady has been sub par, we have reason for hope. The season is hardly lost, and Brady has many times demonstrated that he can lift his game and carry the team to greatness like few if any QB's in NFL history.

If we're lucky, the Hall of Fame Brady may yet emerge this season, and carry this team to it's greatest success ever.

Unfortutely, Brady can't throw the ball to himself, and at the moment he is throwing to arguably the worst receiving core in the league.

Actually, Brady made a nice catch in Miami that was called back by penalty.

P S Tom will be fine. But he needs to be great for a return trip to Miami in February.

I was waiting for the Brady Bashing Thread...it has been a couple of weeks. He only has 22 TD's and he has a ton of picks - 12. He does have nearly enough yards and he has only led the team to 10-4 this year. Sure he lost Givens and Branch and even Vinateri, but he does have Gaffney, Caldwell, Watson, Gabriel (oh wait...)...and Maroney -amazing weapons at his disposal. In 2006 he FINALLY emerged as the flash in the pan that so many predicted he would be, but in the end we did get 3 SB's out of a 6 rounder who I still think owes us nothing and he still might be a HOFer....

Even in an off year with crappy receivers, Brady is still one of the 4 or 5 best quarterbacks in football. Let's see how this team does in the playoffs, with Tom Brady under center they have a chance no matter what. There's still no one I'd rather have as a QB in the playoffs.

Back in 2004 we had clearly the best coaching staff in the league. Now we have one that is pretty good, not clearly the best though - we have been vulnerable against teams and coaches that know us best. I feel better about our chances against San Diego or Baltimore than Denver or Indy in the playoffs, specifically for that reason.

Our games against the Bengals and Bears showed we can outcoach some other pretty good squads. The Jags are more like them than the Jets or Fins. We'll be ok on Sunday, and McDaniels will keep his job for another week.

Jags have a good secondary. I think they will beat down the Pats pretty good.

I could see Jones Drew carving them up like a Christmas turkey.

Brady will be helpless. Especially with pass protection from the likes of "the turnstile" Matt light. The traffic cone. God he sucks.

Thanks for leaving out our shoddy Special Teams and our crappy coaching in your post.

You must be in a holiday mood, mcbee. :bricks:

Three rings worth Kasmir.

I simply think the reason is as plain as the nose on your face, and people who can't accept it and spend hours assessing body language and facial expressions and arm angles are just unable or unwilling to acknowledge it. Box is a great guy, but his analysis of network game tape without benefit of full view of the field or any hint at what players were expected to do is just in depth amatuer assessment. I know you love your outsider stats, but they did also prove that we have the worst WR unit in Brady's career. And while Caldwell may have replaced Givens production in 2005, that was not the team we were looking to reprise. In Branch's absence in 2004 Givens did what Caldwell can't - he replaced #1 production for several weeks including 4 100+ yard games. Brady wasn't the only one who compensated, and that is what we are lacking this season - others to step up on offense. I reminded someone in another thread today what BB always says about evaluating players - it doesn't matter what they do on another team, it's what they can do in this system. In this system Branch, Givens and even Patten produced exceptionally well. Brady doesn't need all pro weapons, just weapons who can function at a high level in the system.

He still has the magic, it's merely wasted when you don't have players around you with the capacity to elevate to your level. Caldwell is knocking himself out, and I give him credit for that effort, but that it takes that much effort on his part after a full TC and 14 weeks into a season and in his 5th year in the league doesn't necessarily bode well long term. It's mentally exhausting, just like being a HOF QB who has to drag his piecemeal offense along becomes mentally as well as physically exhausting. Brady admitted to being both at the end of the 2005 season. I fear 2006 will just bring more of the same.

As Tom says, he gets no say in player personnel decisions. Tommy isn't perfect - we all have 4 INT days every now and then, and he always has. But this year he's being asked AGAIN to work his magic with one hand tied behind his back. Last year it was no viable running game due to injuries. This year it's no consistent offense due to lack of WR's, inconsistent TE performance or availability, inconsistent Oline play and a RB split that is far from seamless because one is a rookie who likes to dance and the other is a bruiser whose in game stamina is again somewhat sketchy.

I didn't like ButtBoy's tone any more than you did -- he may even be a troll -- but it isn't unreasonable to ask if something has been wrong with Brady. I think you hit the nail on the head though that it's more comforting for some of you to see Brady as part of the problem because it does give you hope that he will just straighten it all out. Unfortunately HIS problem may not be one he can. He can't run their routes for them (although he tries to show them how to in practice), catch balls for them, will them to make the right adjustments. They are fortunate he's as good as he is, and as disinclined to throw underperforming weapons and FO's under the bus. He always has their backs, but the don't always have his.

But that's OK cause I do. :D

I agree that Tommy hasnt had the season he has had in the past, and is without a doubt our team leader, and if anyone is going to rally this team its going to be him.You goto look whats around him. Like someone said we have the worst wide receiving group in the leauge. I dont think its the worst but its pretty bad. Reche Caldwell to me isnt a number one reciever and be suprised if hes even here next year, Troy Brown is old, and rest of the recievers cant even get open. We are 10-4 and thats a respectable record considering. This Patriots team is a running team, and i think big games from Maroney and Dillion are more important if we are going to win, than Brady throwing for 350 yards and three TD's. With that, and Brady throwing no picks and the rest of the team holdidng on to the ball, i think we can do this.

SEE THE RANT IN POST #12 (Yes, I know you've all read it here several thousand times before)

Too many of you are psyched that you believe we have "crappy OCs."

We lost Branch and Givens. Givens was a good #2 receiver in our system respected and appreciated by Brady. Branch was a solid #1 receiver for this team, but far from being super star status.

Only one, Givens, has been adequately replaced by Caldwell. Our backups are roughly equivalent to the backups of the past, perhaps with more upside yet unrealized. Troy Brown remains a factor, but he's even older and his play shows it.

This fact that our receives are bottom echelon NFL, etc..is a core problem.
Amateur night solutions like "change the ridiculous routes they are using use some play action, some deception, stay out of that damned shotgun formation with no back in the backfield, which telegraphs a pass play, and start using the inside of the field more often, where a cutting receiver can have an advantage" would not improve the lack of talent situation.

BB has not lost HIS mind with age - the coaching is decent; the play calling and the routes are adequate; the WR talent needs improvement. Despite trying, we did not replace our #1 wideout.

Still might be a HOF'er? Dude.....you're kidding here right? He's already in....they might as well start carving up that bust now........;)

Will you get your Butt out of your BungHole and realize there are 11 players on offense...the most crucial being the offensive line. Then again, your not really a Patriots fan and I believe you already knew that. Have a very lousy Xmas ... may you get the flu.

Sorry, man, but a QB can't just decide to win a game. I am fully confident that Brady will play as well tomorrow as any QB could given whatever he's dealt tomorrow, whether good or bad, but he can't just "assert" himself and decide to win. It would be nice if he could but it doesn't work that way.
