Patriots Chung Fined $7,500 for Bush Helmet Tackle
By: Ian Logue

Patrick Chung was penalized on the field for grabbing Reggie Bush by his helmet and dragging him down, and on Friday the league has apparently penalized him again....

Well, as far as fines usually go, this one was kind of light.

Do they usually give fines for things other than helmet to helmet stuff?

They're giving fines for pretty much everything these days. It's quite ridiculous. I can't believe the NFLPA is letting it get even worse.

It's all part of the new NFL. They're changing up all the uniforms next year, too.

I didn't realize they were fining for more than helmet to helmet. That seems a bit too far to me.

Looks like Clay to me.

If I were Chung I'd see if I could put 30k down pre-tax like in a flexible spending account:D

It is pretty dangerous to tackle from the helmet hole, compared to say a horsecollar. You could really mess up someone's life.

I have zero problem with outlawing and fining for obvious, blatant infractions as in this case with my man Chung, even if inadvertant. Football is not worth spinal injury.

Where I think the NFL approaches flag football is with some of the touching the QB rules and zero tolerance interpretations.

The bold part is where I have an issue.

Lets assume a player is faced with the following hypothetical situation:

If I do nothing the player will run by me and score a TD or if I do X the player will not score a TD but there is a 1% chance the player will be paralyzed. Should the player do X?

I say with a resound NO. Not just "no", but "h.ell no."

So hypothetically speaking, Chung says to himself, "Hmm I either let him score or I do it and he doesn't score and there's a 99% chance he'll be fine." And you're saying he should let him score? I'm not sure I am following. Isn't there a 100% chance that anyone at anytime may be seriously injured?

More I am saying I agree with the new rules regarding safety. And outlawing the more dangerous ones with a net result of higher scoring games because some things defenders use to be able to do are now illegal.

Ahh, I see now. I would tend to agree with that, but probably because I am an offensive minded person. More points the better!

Man, there is a chance the player gets injured every time they touch the ball. You're being a little ridiculous here.

Judging inadvertent makes the call subjective with the result that each call/non-call can be attributed to ref favoritism. I hate arguing this point because in other aspects of life I don't like zero tolerance policies where experienced human interpretation is eliminated from consideration but sports is just entertainment.

The NFL is getting ridiculous with these fines. Their charging players the same fine for throwing punches for something so accidental.

And still no fine for the bull**** hit Stevie Johnson put on Berry. I feel bad for defenders.
