In his first public comments since being released, the enigmatic Todd Sauerbrun expressed surprising feelings toward the team that cut him last week.

The former Pro Bowl punter is not mad at the Broncos for their decision to cut him in favor of Paul Ernster, who punted in the first four games after Sauerbrun was suspended by the NFL for using a banned dietary substance.

"I'm not upset at all with the team. I love the Broncos," Sauerbrun said. "I miss being a Bronco already. The hardest part of this is not not having a job, but having to leave the Broncos. It's feels like my guts are being pulled out. It hurts so bad."

Sauerbrun's heart is so deeply attached to Denver, he said, it is his goal to become the Broncos punter once again.

"That's all I think about," Sauerbrun said. "I want to be a Bronco again. That's the reason why I want to get into the league again. I want to prove to the Broncos that I can stay out of trouble and play well. I want to be a Bronco and I'll do what it takes."

Sauerbrun hopes to hear from other NFL teams soon.

His agent, David Canter, said last week he thought Sauerbrun wasn't getting any calls because teams were focusing on Sauerbrun's off-field issues rather than his punting. Sauerbrun said he agrees with his agent's assessment.

Denver cut Sauerbrun when his four-game suspension ended Tuesday. The NFL suspension was handed down in July, and Ernster performed well in Sauerbrun's absence.

Sauerbrun said he was surprised that he was cut and he was saddened when talking to head coach Mike Shanahan and general manager Ted Sundquist.

"I wanted to hug those guys when I left," Sauerbrun said. "Anywhere else and I would have probably been glad. But it's like I'm leaving family. ... Hopefully I'll be coming back sometime, though."

Wasn't posting the link to this in the signing thread enough? We get your angry, get over it. Nobody's thrilled with it having to come to this, but it is what it is. Who knows, he could be gone in a week if either of the PS players has any real potential. Bill is just trying to win one more game this week to clinch the division. Give him a break.

Well, BB trusts him enough to sign him and he (BB) knows more about football and how it relates to character than I can fathom from my little world so I'll just have to go with it no matter how little I think of the player.

Maybe it could work the other way around too - if anyone caught the Broncos/Pats playoff "Game of the Week" on NFL Network, there was a clip of Denver's defensive coaches asking David Terrell what Brady's hand-signals meant. Yes, the same David Terrell who was in camp with us for a good amount of time in 2005.

If we have to sign this guy, hopefully he stays til February

As I said on the other thread, he's punting for his career and for a contract with someone next year - he's not going to shank one on purpose against Denver or anyone else.

He's the Punter. He's not going to be able to help Denver "prepare" for us. Besides, Miller and Walter are gone - Sauerbrun should be on the Patriots until the end of the year.

In retrospect it is funny to think that Denver would need any extra help in preparing for the Pats.

There is or more accurately WAS no question that Todd Sauerbrun was the most talented Punter available. You could even make the case that he is the most talented Punter, employed or unemployed.

The concern about him is with his character. If you have a DUI that is not good. But as far as I know he has not had multiple DUI's like Eric Warfield did, and the Pats signed him.

Taking ephedra in a supplement is a hell of a difference from smoking crack, or injecting Heroin. It is also a lot different from taking REAL steroids, like HGH or the injected steroids that many athletes used to do, or were given Olympic athletes from the Red Block routinely, or surreptitiously elsewhere.

There is little tolerance for steroids in the NFL, nor should there be. But he paid the price, and got a suspension. It had to be a sobering experience.

Facing the prospect of being out of football had to be an earthshaking experience, also. After almost a season out of football, he may be shaken enough to be reformed. We don't know what BB and Pioli saw in the interviews; a wise ass or a guy genuinely remorseful and looking for a second chance.

If he were the unreformed wise ass I don't think they take a chance, IMHO.
I could see him straightening out and flying right.

You seem to have missed the part where he was proven to be in possession of real steriods for weeks before SB XXXVIII along with a half dozen of his Panthers teamates. In the aftermath of that prescription scandal, none of them actually got caught using the steriods they possessed that season heading into that game AGAINST US. Probably because none of them got tested. Apparently the chances they would have were less than 13%. The NFL program is not nearly as good as fans choose to believe it is. It's just that having had one in place in a league where records are not revered as in baseball has allowed them to continue flying under the radar comparatively speaking.

And that's why steriods aren't perceived as a problem in the NFL, because of attitudes like yours. We don't like it, but at the end of the day football fans just want to win. Kinda like SF Giants fans I guess...
