Sauerbrun admitted that when he took an over-the-counter supplement, he was concerned it might contain the banned substance ephedra. He took the supplement anyway and to his surprise he had a random drug test the next morning. Sauerbrun failed his test, lost his appeal and will be suspended for the first four games of the season. "I made a dumb, dumb decision," Sauerbrun said. "I decided to do it thinking I could get away with it. I didn't."

Sauerbrun tested positive for the banned substance ephedra, which is an automatic four-game suspension. Broncos coach Mike Shanahan said he wouldn't comment on the situation until Sauerbrun's appeal is heard. "We will deal with that after the appeal goes through," Shanahan said. "At that time I'll address it." Sauerbrun's absence will hurt the Broncos. They could use Paul Ernster to fill in. Ernster was a seventh-round pick last year and began the season as the Broncos' kickoff specialist. He was also an effective punter in college. But Ernster struggled in his only NFL game, last year's season opener at Miami. And he missed most of the season and is still recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. Because Jason Elam hasn't kicked off in years, the team likely needs to replace Sauerbrun at punter and on kickoffs. Ernster could handle both roles. The team could also look for a veteran among the available free agents. "I think our upstairs management and the coaches have done enough to cover the bases as far as the guys we have out here and the best guy will probably win that job," linebacker and special teams captain Keith Burns said. "Whoever that is, we expect them to come in and do the job Todd would have done if he was here."

Todd Sauerbrun, the Panthers' often
brash and outspoken punter, was
arrested late Wednesday night on
drunk driving and speeding charges, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police. Sauerbrun, a three-time Pro Bowl selection, was charged with
driving while impaired, speeding, and driving without a license after being pulled over on Caldwell Street near South Boulevard in uptown Charlotte. It's unclear why Sauerbrun doesn't have a license. According to police, Sauerbrun blew .19 on a breath-alcohol test. The state legal limit is .08. He was also charged with driving 64 mph in a 35 mph zone. Panthers coach John Fox said Sauerbrun will play Saturday night against the Atlanta Falcons. Under NFL rules, the team has no grounds to suspend Sauerbrun. Sauerbrun participated in Thursday's walkthrough but declined to talk to reporters. "We're a microcosm of society," Fox said. "It happens to every other NFL team. It's something we take very seriously, but it's reality." Sauerbrun, 31, has been to the Pro Bowl in each of the last three seasons after leading the NFC in gross punting average, the first player to do since 1970. He could be headed toward a fourth Pro Bowl this year, leading the conference with a 44.4-yard gross average.

Broncos punter Todd Sauerbrun recently tested positive for the supplement ephedra and will be suspended for four games, a source close to the situation confirmed Thursday.
The suspension would be served in the first four regular-season games, if appeals don't cause a delay.
Before joining the Broncos in May 2005, Sauerbrun had had his troubles. He was
implicated in a Carolina Panthers' steroid scandal and was arrested in December 2004 for drunken driving.
