Sauerbrun workout

The Patriots continue to explore all options as they search for a new punter, and today they are scheduled to work out free agent Todd Sauerbrun.

Sauerbrun has punted for the Bears (1995-99), Chiefs (2000), Panthers (2001-2004) and Broncos (2005).

The Patriots also worked out veteran Sean Landeta at Gillette Stadium on Tuesday. Danny Baugher and Tom Malone, both of whom are on the team's practice squad, are also options.

Sauerbrun and Landeta are two of the veteran punters available in free agency, a group that also includes Tom Rouen.

Jul 31 2006 - P Todd Sauerbrun admitted that when he took an over-the-counter supplement, he was concerned it might contain the banned substance ephedra. He took the supplement anyway and to his surprise he had a random drug test the next morning. Sauerbrun failed his test, lost his appeal and will be suspended for the first four games of the season. "I made a dumb, dumb decision," Sauerbrun said. "I decided to do it thinking I could get away with it. I didn't."

Jul 7 2006 - P Todd Sauerbrun will be suspended for the first four games of the NFL season. A source with knowledge of the situation said Sauerbrun tested positive for the banned substance ephedra, which is an automatic four-game suspension. Broncos coach Mike Shanahan said he wouldn't comment on the situation until Sauerbrun's appeal is heard. "We will deal with that after the appeal goes through," Shanahan said. "At that time I'll address it." Sauerbrun's absence will hurt the Broncos. They could use Paul Ernster to fill in. Ernster was a seventh-round pick last year and began the season as the Broncos' kickoff specialist. He was also an effective punter in college. But Ernster struggled in his only NFL game, last year's season opener at Miami. And he missed most of the season and is still recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. Because Jason Elam hasn't kicked off in years, the team likely needs to replace Sauerbrun at punter and on kickoffs. Ernster could handle both roles. The team could also look for a veteran among the available free agents. "I think our upstairs management and the coaches have done enough to cover the bases as far as the guys we have out here and the best guy will probably win that job," linebacker and special teams captain Keith Burns said. "Whoever that is, we expect them to come in and do the job Todd would have done if he was here."

...

Dec 16 2004 - P Todd Sauerbrun, the Panthers' often brash and outspoken punter, was arrested late Wednesday night on drunk driving and speeding charges, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police. Sauerbrun, a three-time Pro Bowl selection, was charged with driving while impaired, speeding, and driving without a license after being pulled over on Caldwell Street near South Boulevard in uptown Charlotte. It's unclear why Sauerbrun doesn't have a license. According to police, Sauerbrun blew .19 on a breath-alcohol test. The state legal limit is .08. He was also charged with driving 64 mph in a 35 mph zone. Panthers coach John Fox said Sauerbrun will play Saturday night against the Atlanta Falcons. Under NFL rules, the team has no grounds to suspend Sauerbrun. Sauerbrun participated in Thursday's walkthrough but declined to talk to reporters. "We're a microcosm of society," Fox said. "It happens to every other NFL team. It's something we take very seriously, but it's reality." Sauerbrun, 31, has been to the Pro Bowl in each of the last three seasons after leading the NFC in gross punting average, the first player to do since 1970. He could be headed toward a fourth Pro Bowl this year, leading the conference with a 44.4-yard gross average.

Broncos punter Todd Sauerbrun recently tested positive for the supplement ephedra and will be suspended for four games, a source close to the situation confirmed Thursday.

The suspension would be served in the first four regular-season games, if appeals don't cause a delay.

Before joining the Broncos in May 2005, Sauerbrun had had his troubles. He was implicated in a Carolina Panthers' steroid scandal and was arrested in December 2004 for drunken driving.

Before I saw Pats1's post I thought, "Steroid Man?" NNNOOOO! Geez, how desperate are we? They should train Cassel to hold for the Ghost and just put one of the rookies out there. Can they really be that much worse than Ken Walter?

If the Pats sign Sauerbrun, I might just become a Colts fan.

Nothing could be that desperate! Wouldn't Bob Kraft put the kaibash on this anyway?

I don't care if Sauerbrun took ephedra or not. Whatever. It shouldn't even be banned. I just want a good punter.

Come on, where's the holiday spirit? Come on, everyone deserves a 4th and 5th chance....this is America. Come on, we're desparate.

That's it...outta my system. If they sign him, I'm only rooting for the Giants (relatives) the rest of this season. I'm with Pats Deb. I'd rather skip the kicking game altogether. Some guys you just have to say, 'thanks, but no thanks.'

If he's now de-roided, maybe he won't make a good showing at his workout anyway lol.

Ugh,remember this? "Jan 15 2006 - P Todd Sauerbrun made one of the most important hits of the year for the Broncos. On a kickoff, Sauerbrun hit Patriots returner Ellis Hobbs and forced a fumble."

It shouldn't even be banned.

Tell that to Steve Bechler's family.

T.O. is a "good" receiver too, if you ignore all the problems he causes.

The Patriots will take the first step to becoming the Bengals by signing Sauerbrun.

There's a lot of things that are dangerous if taken in large doses. Ephedra is fine if taken at appropriate doses.

It is really odd...Suaerbrun??? Wasn't he the one who caused a fumble?

That's debatable.

And why would you want a player on your team who knowingly took a banned substance?

(Who was also "smart" enough to drink and drive)

. I just want a good punter.

And there's that. We ARE desperate; the ? is HOW desperate. Thinking playoffs,I'd prefer a vereran over a rookie, and preferably a veteran without "issues" of course. But looking at the article,it sounds like Denver let him walk because their replacement turned out to be just as good,so why put up with Roid-baggage when you have a more than adequate baggage-free replacement. But if they didn't have that option available, would they have still let him go? Maybe not.
He's quoted as saying "I made a dumb decision". So if the BS is behind him and he has the best workout of the bunch,I dunno? Hopefully one of the others will have an excellent performance,in which case this will all be moot.

Wasn't he the Carolina punter who kicked the ball out of bounds at the 40 in SB 38 giving the Pats great field position to start that final drive?

So he's a steriod user, a drunk driver and he suffers from brain farts in key situations. This is good.

No, that was their place kicker, John Kasay. On the kickoff before the winning drive.

Yeah he's a druggie! He got suspended! Belichick wouldn't want him!

Who's one of his closest player-friends again? (#56).

And did everyone really believe Ty Law's "Cousin" story?

C'mpn people, toughen up. We'd become the Bengals? You make it sound like he murdered someone.

He doesnt seem like a Patriots type player to me and I wouldnt think that the Pats organization wants someone with a history like him on the team..

But, we do need a veteran punter and he was in the top 10 of all punters from 2003-2005( based on the punting stats on NFL.com)

So its either go with one of the PS punters or close our eyes and sign Sauerbrun.

What about Tom Rouen?? Wasnt he a capable punter w/o a history or problems off the field??

Denver let him walk because their replacement turned out to be just as good

Of course anyone on this board could kick 50 yard punts in that stadium. "Unfairest-home-field-advantage-in-history-cut-blocking goons-refs-who-kiss-their-asses-scumbags"

Then why don't we all just apply for the job lol ;) One of us might get a walk-on cameo appearance? How about one of the Rockettes?

1) Who's #56?

2) I didn't.

3) That would actually be the Ravens.
