I was only able to watch a few games this weekend including PIT/BAL NYG/WASH parts of OAK/DEN and of course NE/MIA. While watching these games I just felt like the officials were being far more lenient than they were in years past. (where they seemed to throw a flag if a DB farted too close to a receiver) Maybe it was just me but I really think they were being a little lax and it was clear in all games not just the Pats game. Although I was most upset with the calls in that game naturally lol. Anyone else feel the same way or am I just being crazy? (which is a very realistic possibility)

Peyton is done and thus Polian is done as well so the Colt rules are over.

The Jets are Herr Kommissioner's boys and if they called games the way they do against Colt receivers their corners would lead the league in penalties.

The only points of emphasis are:

1. What is good for Peyton?

2. What is good for the Jets?

Not necessarily in that order.

Hopefully it goes back to being that way; I'm sick of WRs running around untouched all game.

I feel they are being more lenient as well. There was a stint between 2005-2007 where you couldn't even touch the WR past 5 yards without getting a PI. It changed a lot of games for us (especially against the colts).

One thing I did notice was 85 was taking a beating out there and not getting any calls. I wonder if there was leftover animosity against Chad and the refs during his time with the Bengals.

The NY Jets were not flagged for ONE defensive penalty in the Dallas game. If the game re-airs on NFLN, watch Cromartie...at least 75% of the Dallas passing plays he's committing PI...most of it overt....never mind that Revis has his own set of Jordan rules...but now Cromartie?

Personally, I would rather have it this way. In previous years, too many big yardage penalties were awarded on tick-tack or phantom pass interference calls. With this being a spot foul, they really shouldn't call it unless it is obvious on intermediate and deep passes or passes in the endzone. Games have been won and lost on tick-tack calls.

However they want to call it is fine with me. Just be consistent for both teams that's all I ask for.

We need that NFL ref toady to clarify the "point of emphasis" or perhaps de-emphasis this season. All said & done, it is important for refs to be consistent in what they do or don't call. That way coaches like BB can properly prepare their CBs for the game. Otherwise it's chaos and fans like us will be wicked pissed.

Agree with this wholeheartedly, there's always outrage if fans feel a team was favored and if it were to be blatant things would get very ugly. Great points from all. I think if there is a healthy middle ground between years past and the way they've started this year, and that the refs are consistent with calls, then things should be just fine. If this happens then the NFL should be even more enjoyable.

And yes I also thought 85 was Getting interfered with a little much. Maybe that's just the homer in me tho hehe

Id rather let them play too but grabbing the recievers jersey (happened to 85) is going too far, those should get called.
Maybe BB knew they were going to get more lax with the PI rule and could explain why he opted for bigger corners.

I am fine any time the Refs keep there flags in there pockets, didn't seem to slow down the passing game at all any way.

Yeah for the most part although I really wanted 85 get in the game a little more and I honestly think he lost out on a couple of catches due to interference. I think he would be a little more confident if he had a couple more catches. Lord knows the hammer has been coming down on him these past couple of days. People have been pretty hard on him and he's only played one single game as a member of this team.

I don't really care that much either way, as long as they are consistent, and ACCURATE (I'm looking at you afccg 2006). I think looser rules could potentially benefit us, due to our quick receivers and reliance on our tight ends and running backs, and also because I think our corners are tough enough to take advantage.

OTOH, I think it's still we go as the offense goes, so I want the offense going as much as possible.

I'm the same way. My least favorite thing about the NFL is the refs do make calls against good teams that they wouldn't against the bad teams, and I will do the analysis of the 2007 Patriots vs the 2007 Lions to prove this.
