To repeat, can we stop Jax running game with Wright starting NT.

I certainly think so...Tayler is injured and if he is in the game he may go out early..and that is OK. Drew is another thing...IF he has to carry the load, he will wear down and be less effective over time. He makes it as a change of pace back with Taylor carrying the load. I do think they can be slowed down and leave it to Garrard to make plays..THAt is not happening.

No, I repeat no if they stay in the 3-4. Ron Dayne picked up about 90 or so yards. If no vince and the Pats stay in the 3-4 I think they'll be shredded for 175+ yards rushing minimum.

to be honest , we have to win this game on offense, if we get some kinda lead even score fast first then it helps our D- sure it applies to all opponents but more so this week against a very good jax D , it really is an onus on our offense IMO. Defensively it may be like the miami game early on but really depends how well we run the off.

The easiest way to stop it would be to get a lead and then Jax would be forced to pass. Last week the Texans had some success running the ball but it didn't really matter because they were down so much. Regardless, I think the run defense will be OK. It won't be as good as when Vince is in there but I don't think they are going to get "shredded."

Getting the lead was old patriot football. this team has been unable to do that consistently. the old pats were known for their first drives and getting ahead.

ideally they would have gotten the lead in every game. i just don't see the offense exploding against a good team and putting up major points.

Perhaps...

No matter though, this appears to be the QB's game to win or lose (on paper)...

we will be fine...we will bend but not break on run D...vince is a big part but we still have way above average LB's no matter what ppl say..
its not like we are trying to play the 3-4 with NO NT, wright can at the very least will take up a block for the LB's to make the tackles....our run D is not based around one guy. keep in mind the people playing around big vince...jarvis, seymour, warren can more then hold their own...

in fact run defense is not what im worried about at all....its our offense turning the ball over and lack of production...our defense WILL and always keeps us in the game its up to brady and the offense to take advantage..:rocker:

one more note...people were complaining about not converting on 3rd & goal last week...i think the playcalling was pretty conservative...we didnt need the points..we should do better this week its been a strong point over the last few years

Good points and I agree about our offense being intentioanlly conserative last week.

The defense has played some games better than others but the bottom line is that in every game this year the defense has played well enough to win. The deciding factor is whether the offense can get it together and pull their weight, and this game will be no different.

Can we stop the running game next week with Vince? ;)

The Jags have Labrandon Toefield on the roster if Taylor can't go or if he's slowed at any point during the game. Toefield doesn't get a lot of action in spite of the fact that he's an effective backup in his own right.

They also have Derrick Wimbush, who can rotate between fullback and halfback as needed. He's more of a bruising type back that runs well between the tackles. He doesn't get a lot of touches because he's the starting FB.

You won't see much of a dropoff in the production from the running game with either guy in there.

Perhaps you're right Biggie, but then it may not be as bad as you think...

Houston: First Half first downs = 4, 1 from running, 3 from passing (not an impressive running statistic...)

Ron Dayne first half stats: 9 carries, 48 yds, 5.3 avg/carry, Longest 19* yds.
*accounts for the one first down
Lets look at that 19 yd scamper: 2nd Qtr 1-10-HOU10 (6:43) R.Dayne up the middle to HST 29 for 19 yards (A.Samuel, R.Colvin). [ur]http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/playbyplay/NFL_20061217_HOU@NE[/url]

Going to the tape I see Wright double-teamed by the C/RG and Warren double-teamed by the RT/TE. Colvin is setting the edge against the FB, while the LG pulls and turns Bruschi outside just enough to give Dayne a crease - Vrabel is playing the cutback lane in the LG's hole and is easily picked off, as he abandons the lane responsibilty, by the RG releasing off the double-team of Wright as Vrabel tries to come around the double-team pile and over the middle to help Tedy. A beautifully blocked play that put 4 OL and a TE at the point of attack. To make it even better, that big WR Johnson gets inside and blocks Hawkins as the first S to come up. Dayne gets another 9 or so yds because Colvin who caught him from behind is trying to strip the ball and not worry about bringing him down right away.

Now Dayne did indeed gain 94 yds in the game - but do you assume a Patriots' team who has a substantial lead is overly worried about the run? 1st and 10 at the Houston 10 with a 20 to 0 score, the Pats do not have 8 men in the box, they have the safeties playing deep...

Jacksonville will need to pass at some point, if only to keep the Pats honest. Wright may not have impressed Albert Breer, but for a first start he did quite well in the middle. Houston's 105 total yds in rushing are an empty statistic for predicting the result of the Jacksonville game.

I see no reason not to start the game in the 3-4, it is the Pats' strongest run stopping formation. Wright has consistently drawn double-teams when I see him on tape at NT. That means the offense has allocated two players to keep him out of the play. If the Offense wants to, they can use a heavy formation, like the one you don't like, to telegraph a run with 8-9 blockers working against the Pats front seven, except telegraphing also brings down Sanders and Hawkins. So anytime Wright draws a double-team there is a Patriot player who does not have a blocker assigned, which means someone should be able to find that runner and slow him down. Wright isn't the end of the Pats #4 ranked rush defense and 175 yds for Jacksonville sounds just a tad pessimistic.

Bring it on Jax, Go Pats!

You may be right, but I stand by my prediction and remember the size of Jacksonville's wr's.

175+ if wright is in the middle in the 3-4 the majority of the time.

Excellent, this should be an interesting post-game discussion.

It should, but the 3-4 needs to be utilized 80% of the time or more. I know we may not have clear numbers on this, but can kind of guess on observations. and we also have the rushing yardage also.

Discussing the parameters of the game afterwards is all part of the fun. :p

You do realise this isn't a Colts board right?

Seriously....175?

Thats an outrageous prediction - i look forward to you eating some humble pie sunday night.

A better question might be can the Pats stop the Jax running game without Wilfork or Wright? Seeing as how Wright has landed on the injury list as questionable with a shoulder injury.

Now I could be wrong, but I don't remember Wright being on the injury report last week? Obviously he's not the name that typically jumps out at you. But if both he and VW don't play, that scares me a little.

Wright and his shoulder were on the injury report before the Houston game - he'll be available.
