I heard on WEEI this morning that one of Meriweather's friends have been charged with rape for an incident that happened in Meriweather's house in July. This guy seems to be hanging with the wrong element and might have played a part in his getting shipped out of town.

All throughout the spring, I was campaigning for them to trade their "2-time Pro-Bowler" for a 2nd rounder. The Pats could have gotten that.

Instead, zilch.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA, a 2nd rounder for Meriweather?? What exactly have you smoked??

You think other team's GM's don't watch the games and just go by meaningless accolades like Pro-Bowl selections to measure the quality of a player?

I admit it's weird that they didn't get even a conditional pick for a guy who ended up scoring a $1 mil signing bonus. But I don't get the "could have gotten" talk.

A 2nd? This year? There were almost none of the usual player-for-pick camp trades, and FA safeties like Goldson and Page signed 1-year short money deals.

Interesting. Looks like a fatal combination of on- and off-field issues did him in. And, if the off-field stuff played an important part, it's good to know that the spirit of MHK lives on in how the Patriots fill their roster.

Obv we don't know all the details... but not surprising at all. Meriweather definitely seemed like a punk. From the U, felt it necessary to collaborate on a vulgar rap song (was that last year?), sounds as dumb as a brick (and his play reflects this). Good riddance.

Problem was we were not allowed to trade him during the spring because of the lock out.

No way would we have gotten a 2 but I think with no lock out we probably could have gotten a 4 at best but at least something.

Once the lockout was lifted teams were allowed up to 90 players and had a tiny window to get them into camp and trained I think teams were much more concerned with this than trades plus there were a lot of FAs still out there so why spend the money.

When it comes down to it the only chance we had to trade him was when there was a glut of talent being moved around the league not really a sellers market.

I have to say I dont generally say I am disapointed in a player as I feel we all hold these guys to insane standards. But a few training camps ago I watched Meriweather grow into a pro bowl player he was flying around and I kept coming home commenting on him.
Turns out he did make the pro bowl that year sure injuries helped as Reed and Polomalu were out but he earned it that year but then he never improved and regressed.
Which fine I could live with but then I learned how stupid he comes off as (big bang clock and all the quotes) and then the real stupid stuff began happening gun shots at parties and now this. Good ridance.

Glad he's gone...would have liked to get something, anything for him....but it was time to part ways.

All throughout the spring the league was in a lockout and no player could be traded... Believe me, Bill loves value and I guarantee you he shopped these guys before cutting them. There just wasn't a trade market for many guys given the # of them slated to be cut for one reason or another...

Couldn't trade in the Spring.

This along with a few other things like getting into a shoot out? did him in, it was the finale straw

Back on topic.

If the team knew about this at the time surely they'd have released him sooner if this were a reason behind him being released.

Before we hang the dude, shouldn't we wait for more details to come out?

Valid point.

Might you still hold on in hopes of some sort of trade compensation. Teams do funny things in search of talent. Us included (heck ecpecially us).

Re: New info surfaces on why Pats may have released Meriweather

We can certainly see why the Patriots were fed up with him.

GREAT Ray Lamontagne song!

Meriweather is never directly guilty for any stuff he's accused of, but he sure surrounds himself with alot of BullSh*t
