Wes Welker appreciation thread

TFB relaying BB's thought on Welker: "I'm sick of seeing Welker run seam routes."



Tonight Welker passed Gino Cappelletti and Terry Glenn for sixth all-time in yardage for the Patriots, and is just over 300 yards behind Jim Colclough for fifth.

He's already fourth in receptions, and 10th(!) in TDs.

Trade Welker? I say extend the beast. :rocker:

Welker showed off a bunch of new tricks tonight. In two WR sets in all of last season, Welker had 218 yards. This game alone he had somewhere between 99 and 160 (have not checked his other receptions, but 99er was 2WR). And then there's this:

THAT is why he was a bad fit for the 2WR/2TE offense last year but a pretty good fit for it this game. Apparently he's been working on those intermediate routes.

What I love about the 99-yarder is that it was on a schoolyard kind of play -- isolate your best receiver in an otherwise empty part of the field and toss him the ball.

The thought was that he was "getting older" and would be on the downside of his career etc, and that since he was a slot guy, just about anyone could step in and fill that role--particularly Edelman.

I think it's completely ridiculous, and sincerely hope that some of those posters have seen the light a little more.

It is my opinion (certainly arguable) that Welker is the 2nd most important player on the team. He is every single thing that we want on this team, and I believe he is a lot of what Belichick looks for as a player. I couldn't imagine why anyone would be so extremely short-sighted, but it isn't surprising with some of the thoughts around here.

It's clear now that those struggles were due to recovering from his injury, and not age. His speedy recovery was nothing short of miraculous, but it was impossible to expect him to be the same player he was less than a year after he got hurt. But he's back, and he looks ready for a huge season.

It's the 2 year lag theory. It's always the second year removed from a major injury that a truer reflection of a person's ability returns.

Nothing against Mankins contract BS aside, but they should have named Welker a captain on offense considering they allowed Moss to achieve that distinction more than once upon a time... Wes is the epitome of what Brady needs to play with, guys who never lose focus in the best or toughest of times and are both mentally and physically tough as nails. I love that when someone asked him to gush over the TE's last night he didn't take the bait. Rather he talked about how important it will continue to be to keep them focused and consistently productive and working hard to insure they don't have bad games.

Wes is the best and the Patriots need to re-sign this guy. He is very valuable to this team and has become to Tom Brady what Deion Branch used to be, his invaluable "go to" guy.

Brady has chemistry with Welker because of the tenacity they both bring to this offense. With the addition of Woodhead there is now a trio of guys with constant uphill battles and a chip for each shoulder.

A QB who can't move. No problem, if I read the defense well enough I won't have to.

A tiny RB. No problem, it is an advantage when used to hide. They think I'm a thigh pad!

A little WR. Little?? Did you not see that stiff arm?!?

This is the embodiment of the football spirit. When you hear announcers speak about the fact that the winning team will be the team that wants it more, they are talking about these 3 guys and whether or not their passion has permeated the team. They are the terriers that just won't let go of the toy even though you lifted them off the ground and shook it. They will fight you every step of the way no matter what you throw at them.

What they bring to the team is immeasurable.
