Forbes Magazine: Patriots ranked 3rd most valuable franchise

The top 5 has 3 teams from the NFCE and 2 teams from the AFCE. I call east coast bias!

I remember we were around 1.2 billion at some point. so we increased by 200 million. all we need is one more Lombardy trophy to propel us to the first place. Hope this happens this year :rocker:

As investments go Bob Kraft hit it out of the park with his purchase of the Patriots.

I feel like in large part sports franchises are heavily valued by short term performance.

Like Imagine we never got BB / Brady, but were still an annual playoff hopeful (like the pats from 96 to 00), where would we rank? Probably above average cause NE is a relative big market, but I dont think we'd be third.

And the BB / Brady combo only has a few years left, so if I were (enough enough to be) a potential buyer I wouldn't be buying the Pats now.

For example Indy at #11. Its quite possible that if Manning's career is over, their revenue will shrink dramatically as will this value estimate.

Heh heh. I'm as much of a Homer as anyone and frequently find myself using terms like "we" and "us" when referring to the Patriots when I talk about the team's performance, like "We really had a great/lousy game yesterday" or "I think we have a real shot at the SB this year."

But, I find using those terms to refer to the economic value of the team really humorous. Unless you own shares, the only "we" associated with that $1.4b is the Kraft family and maybe a couple of minority partners of whom I am unaware.

They have sure done well for themselves and "we" have put a lot of that money in their pockets by spending "our" money to attend games and buy merchandise, by taking "our" time to watch "their" team on TV and by helping "them" build "their" brand by posting on sites like this.

They, of course, reciprocate by turning out a competitive team of which we can be proud both on and off the field. They also give back to the community in numerous ways through their charitable activities.

But the Krafts ain't throwing any cash from the Duck Boats when we celebrate "our" SB wins.

;)

I think it's all about brand and brand building. The Cowboys haven't lit up many scoreboards in nearly 20 years and the Redskins have been perennially disappointing under the Snyder reign of errors. But, both teams still have brands that transcend not only individual seasons but even decades of mediocrity.

And I truly disagree on the prospects for the Patriots' valuation. I think that Kraft has built a brand here that will endure long after Belichick and Brady are playing golf on Sunday mornings in the Fall. I think his management instincts and the management team will keep things rolling, value wise, just nicely thank you.

As for Indy, Manning has been with the team long enough to build the Indianapolis version of the Colts into a powerful brand, which I think will endure, assuming good coaching and good management. Only time will tell in that regard, as I don't have the same confidence in current Colts' ownership.

I think he hit it out of the Park with how he managed the investment after the purchase and, like all mega rich folks, got just a little bit lucky too...in this case with a sixth round draft pick at QB who turned out to be pretty good.

The real growth for the Krafts in the future will come from developing those parking lots across Route 1 into a mini biotech city.

It's very impressive what they have done with Patriot Place and they are in the 2nd inning of it all.
