NFL orders clubs: Show fantasy stats at stadiums this year

"Previously, it was up to individual clubs to decide if they wanted to show player stats from out-of-town games on their scoreboards rather than focusing on their own. Not any more.."

In before a bunch of people with an irrational hate for fantasy football claim that this is ruining the game. And also claim that people who play it somehow aren't real football fans.

I am not a fan of fantasy football, I prefer to root for team goals over individual stats.

The only thing it impacts negatively is when you're arguing with someone who's using fantasy stats to try to prove real life football worth. "I'm in an individual defensive player league, and Vince Wilfork only ranks 46th among defensive lineman. How can you say he's one of the best?"

Ugh. Other than that, I LOVE fantasy football, and have no problem with its inclusion.

fantasy football is so goddamn stupid, its ruining the game. You aren't a real football fan if you play that crap.

Every year I vow I'm not playing fantasy football but end up filling in for someone in a league.

I hate it in that it makes me care about something other than just the game itself.

On the flip side, I appreciate that it'll get me to watch a Rams-Cardinals game that I otherwise wouldn't. It does provide some entertainment.

Fantasy football is like anything - probably OK in moderation.

I wouldn't go quite as far, but yeah. I simply don't understand the appeal. Oh well.

As to the NFL mandating these FF stats, I believe that it's a damned slippery slope they've set themselves upon. There are FF leagues that have money involved and that puts this very much into a twilight zone area of gambling, which the NFL frowns upon.

How much longer, then, before the Commish decides that all teams must post the Vegas lines before & during each game?

If folks want to play FF, then go ahead. I don't get why, but that's their call. However, the NFL ought NOT to be involved in it, just as it needs to place a very bright and solid line between the NFL & gambling.

respects,

The league loves ff because it gives people a "rooting" interest in a ton of different games. So I can see why they'd want to promote it in the stadiums on gameday (and make no mistake, this is a PROMOTIONAL mandate, to make those who don't play fantasy feel like they're missing out on something important.)

Personally I don't play, in large part because I don't want to be in the position of so many fans I hear saying things like "sorry, gotta root for the Jets this week because I'm starting Holmes." I like my fandom pure. Nothing against ff in principle, though, sounds like fun.

I hope you're being sarcastic. Fantasy football is actually good for the game because of how much more attention is now paid to games. Without fantasy football, a lot of people wouldn't be as into the NFL, or getting the Sunday ticket, etc. Fantasy football is great for the NFL. All of the blowhards who despise fantasy football and think that people who play fantasy football aren't real football fans are full of ignorance. Not talking about you or anyone, but people in general.

I still think you're being sarcastic though.. :)

Trying to make stadiums a larger, uncomfortable, overpriced and less convenient version of peoples' homes is not the way to ensure the long term viability of the current financial model.

I don't have an irrational hate of it. I have a rational one.

Primarily because I watch a lot of games in a football party-setting and the last ******* thing i want to hear about is whether or not that latest score for the San Fran game might mean that Frank Gore got a touch down which means you need Drew Brees to get 2 TDs on the MNF game at least.

Conversation about a made up team that exists only in your head and doesn't involve anyone else gets old really, really fast when I am trying to watch the goddamn game.

Sure if you play and talk about it during a commercial, halftime or post-game show I got no problems with that cause I'm not a jerk but seriously shut up about Fantasy Football when the game is on.:mad::mad:

FWIW, it's allegedly the opposite: they're afraid that by not showing FF stats at games, FF players won't come to watch the games.

This is obviously another anti-Pats, pro-Jets move by Goodell.

I really don't understand the hate for Fantasy Football. It is nothing but good for the game, as an example I will use my work league. We have 12 'owners' in our league, I would say MAYBE 5 of them (myself included) are huge NFL and team specific fans. The rest? Probably could not tell you who Devin McCourty or Darrelle Revis are, let alone the teams they play for...

This makes them watch the games, generate hits on NFL specific sites and generally pay attention to the NFL. If the NFL makes more money from people that generally would not pay attention...then good for them, AND FOR US as true fans. It helps support NFL radio chatter, NFL Network, NFL sites, Magazines, Commercials, etc..without increasing fanbase, therefore revenue....the NFL would not gain anything and possibly lose teams, fanbase, etc.

Keep your thoughts about Fantasy Football to yourselves if you hate it, don't play and don't worry about it, in the end it is HELPING the NFL.

[shakes pseudo-Luddite fist in impotent rage] :D

Oh, for the days when the TV crawl would just give me the scores, and I could see if the Jets were losing without scurrying off to some other source...

At least they know what is really important. Screw the Super Bowl the Lions are Fantasy Champs.
