Dear Bill Belichek

I am writing to you as a concerned Patriots fan. I have a few issues with the path we have taken this year and i would like to discuss them with you.

1 The 3-4 system is best when the bulk of your talent in your front seven is at linebacker. THIS IS NOT THE CASE ANYMORE WITH THE PATRIOTS.
Willie Mac =gone
Ted J=gone
Tedy B= starting to look old ( i still love him but facts are facts)
Junior Say Ow :) =gone

The talent in our front seven is in the Defensive line. You have won 3 Rings by being adaptable. I know you love the 3-4 but we dont have the personel to run it very well. Please consider swiching to a 4-3. You have a great football mind, you can find ways to disguise coverage in a 4-3 scheme. I think Seymour Wilfork Warren and Green on the field at the same time would be a nightmare for opposing offenses. Plus 3-4 personel are hard to find in the college ranks and more teams in the NFL who will be drafting before us run this same system.

2 The two gap system is great at stopping the run (if the players are disciplined) however it makes it very difficult to rush the passer. The league has recently evolved to a pass crazy legue with the no contact (patriots rule) . You might want to rethink that 2 gap philosophy and allow defenders to attack a single gap instead of having to overpower the opposing offensive linemen to get any pressure. We need more pass rush badly. This would help Asante and Ellis more than anything else.

3 You won 3 rings while having the best coaching staff in the legue. we essentially had 3 head coaches. I dont think either of your current coordinators will get any consideration for head coaching jobs this year. This should tell you something about them.
Were they the best guys available this year.?

4 Have you and Scott Pioli taken into account that the salary cap has risen significantly. Therefore the value of a any given player must also rise since you are slicing up a bigger pie 53 ways. I keep waiting for other teams to have to let go key players but we seem to be only team that faces this. There will not be any good FA this year. Any player that is any good will get PAID so dont think you willl be able to pick up scraps from someone elses table. Those day are done for a while. You should work really hard to keep your own FA because i dont think you will be getting anybody from other teams.

5 Please forward this to Tom Brady : dink and dunk , remember that, you seem to be believing the hype that you are the 'golden armed boy'. You are starting to look like Drew Bledsoe sitting in the pocket waiting for a reciever to come open way down the field and taking sacks. Get rid of the ball quickly and accurately and hope for some RAC. Please adjust that post route where you send Ben Watson down the middle and there are two safeties waiting to crack his spine. You are going to get the guy killed. Have him sit down int the void between the LBs and the safeties. I have seen it several times this year with bad results, ball tipped in the air or dropped, fumbles and most recently injury.

6 Three words screen screen screen. we seem to have only recently remembered this play.

7. This seems like the third of fourth year we have half the team is out due to injury. I have to believe that this cant be just bad luck. We are doing something different than other teams in the NFL. Maybe Strength and conditioning? too much? too little? Look into this.

8 Tell Tully that the spin move is not working. Tell Tedy B that his attempts to flip over blocking RBs when he is blitzing is counter productive. One day he is going to connect with the opposing QB in the knees and get a huge penalty. Tell Ellis to shut up/just play and turn around and look for the ball when the reciever does.

9 Does Marquise Hill have naked pics of you or something? I cant see why this guy continues to take up a roster spot. Has he ever stepped on the field.

10 Take all the plays with Corey Dillion running to the outside and throw them away. Corey is not going to outrun anybody to the outside. Corey you have 3 options. A:find hole inside B:make a hole inside or C:push a pile.

This defense is currently the #2 scoring defense in the league, allowing 13.8 ppg. Only the Ravens are allowing fewer points, at 13.4ppg. New England is a full point better than the #3 team, the Chicago Bears, who are allowing 14.9ppg. I'd say that the 3-4 is working quite well.

See comment above from point #1

Again, the defense is #2 in scoring, so I'm not exactly sure why you're lumping the two coordinators together. As for the O.C., while it's a topic that some here love to pummel, the fact is that he's new to the job, has had to deal with having no set receiving corps and a slew of injuries, yet the team is in the upper half of the league in offense. Teams may not beat down his door for a head coaching position this year, but you are apparently forgetting just how many years it took for Crennel and Weis to get the call, particularly Crennel.

4 Have you and Scott Pioli taken into account that the salary cap has risen significantly. Therefore the value of a any given player must also rise since you are slicing up a bigger pie 53 ways. You must have missed how the salary cap was handled by this team. It has signed players to contracts and still had enough money to re-sign Branch if he'd been willing to bargain, and to sign Law if he hadn't chosen Kansas City.

Watson's job is to go in the middle and take the hits. He needs to protect the ball better. That's not on Brady. The middle of the field is rough, and that's why you send your tight ends there instead of your 170lb receivers.

And the "Bledsoe" argument is ridiculous. Brady has only been sacked 24 times in 14 games.

6 Three words screen screen screen. we seem to have only recently remembered this play.
To take up where DI left off - Albert Breer writes in his tale of the tape that the screen was used often Sunday and didn't work very well after the first couple times. Anecdotally, I remember screens getting blown up by Houston, perhaps using it too often isn't the answer.

7. This seems like the third of fourth year we have half the team is out due to injury. I have to believe that this cant be just bad luck. We are doing something different than other teams in the NFL. Maybe Strength and conditioning? too much? too little? Look into this.
Yes, the Pats have had a lot of injuries, then again, they play a fairly competitive schedule, are recognized as the league's elite organization with the best won/loss record for the past six years. Isn't it odd that defending Champion Pittsburgh is a battered mess? How about defending AFC North Champion Cincinnati and their injuries? The Colts finally wound up with a big time injury list this season. Seattle, didn't they play in Detroit last February and aren't they suffering an injury bug? A Denver fan was just here yesterday complaining about their injuries. Welcome to the real world where lesser teams want to bring their "A" game and challenge the Three-Time World Champion New England Patriots and the other teams considered elite, just how is pre-season pundit favorite Carolina doing?

8 Tell Tully that the spin move is not working. Tell Tedy B that his attempts to flip over blocking RBs when he is blitzing is counter productive. One day he is going to connect with the opposing QB in the knees and get a huge penalty. Tell Ellis to shut up/just play and turn around and look for the ball when the reciever does.
Well, I'm glad to meet someone who knows more about the game than the professionals involved in it. Odd that TBC who hasn't started all that long is #3 in sacks, tied with Jarvis Green at 5.5 behind Colvin and Warren - spin moves must be doing something. Bruschi = Full Tilt Full Time, live with it. Ellis is getting praised by BB for working hard and playing through adversity, good thing you're a 30+ year NFL coaching veteran and can advise him on how to develop defensive players.

9 Does Marquise Hill have naked pics of you or something? I cant see why this guy continues to take up a roster spot. Has he ever stepped on the field.
He played the 4th quarter against Houston at RDE, it's there on the tape, guess BB doesn't mind a little blackmail.

10 Take all the plays with Corey Dillion running to the outside and throw them away. Corey is not going to outrun anybody to the outside. Corey you have 3 options. A:find hole inside B:make a hole inside or C:push a pile.
He gained 5 yards on a poorly blocked play by beating all those speedy LB and DB fellows from Houston to the corner and turning it up field. I would agree that he isn't a rocket anymore, but he's not dead if he does need to bounce it outside.

An enjoyable if badly misguided read.

Speaking of kool-aid, did you see the teamwork between Deus Irae and Box in posts 4 and 5? That's the kind of unselfish, do-whatever-it-takes attitude we look for here on a Pats messageboard. We get here early, leave late, and if someone goes down in mid-post, someone else steps up to take their place.

You might want to get some body armor...there are too many fans that think that everything is all right...get ready to duck...

As most teams are going to 3-4 we are going to move to 4-3 so we can face the problems which are making them do this.:rocker: awesome.

Do you realize that we are the top 4 in 32 teams which means we have the personal and with execution will win it all ?

I'm sure this is exactly the kind of thing Bill needs to turn the team around. He's been asking for fan advice, after all, who knows the game better than the coaches: the fans.

"7. This seems like the third of fourth year we have half the team is out due to injury. I have to believe that this cant be just bad luck. We are doing something different than other teams in the NFL. Maybe Strength and conditioning? too much? too little? Look into this."

Now lets see Junior Seau broken arm, Rodney Harrison broken clavicle, Ken Walter reportedly a broken bone in his foot are not conditioning related injuries. Three of the others Terbucky Jones, Don Davis and Barry Gardner have 9,11 and 8 years respectively in this league, they are older, more beat up and take longer to heal. I suspect the Garrett Mills, Matt Shelton and Gemmara Williams are being "red shirted" and on the list for that reason. I do not have the energy to research the other 6 folks on the list.

Heard before, and most recently Josh Miller who credits Mike Woicik with extending his career 5 years because of the methods and techniques he uses. Do you think that if this was a possibility BB would have ignored this issue?? I think not, stuff happens in this NFL and much of it is coincidental.

LMAO, I'm sure Bill will take your explanations of how best to play defense to heart. Now I've seen it all.

I do like some of the ideas here but this was a brave post. You're going to have issues with many of the "only kool aid" drinking posters here. :D
All these defense suggestions, you do realize we have the #2 scoring defense in the league right ? It's not Kool Aid, it's just not being a stupid moron. If someone doesn't like McDaniels that's one thing but to tell Belichick his concept of a 3-4 is bad is just hysterical.

Welcome to the board.

You have Flying Elvis ON you Buttocks. But it looks like your head is way UP your bottocks.

while some of these points have been thought of and discussed, its sure not the way to present them if you want people to reason to you. as for your defensive arguments though, they are just dumb.

All these defense suggestions, you do realize we have the #2 scoring defense in the league right ? It's not Kool Aid, it's just not being a stupid moron. If someone doesn't like McDaniels that's one thing but to tell Belichick his concept of a 3-4 is bad is just hysterical.

It's more of #7 and #9 that strike me as interesting. The injury bug has for years been more of a problem for the pats then other teams. Is there a relationship? I don't really know, but what I do know is it seems like we lose so many players each season, I'm beginning to wonder if there is a relationship with strength and conditioning exercises the team employs versus injuries. On Marquise Hill, I haven't seen him out on the field enough and don't really hear his name called out when he does play that I'm intrigued by what potential BB sees in him. I'm sure there is or he would have been outta here a long time ago. I just want to know what potential he may possess as a football player. We all know he is gifted in terms of size and speed, two factors that you are born with and that you can't coach, but when is he going to bloom and realize that potential?

I guess the comment I made on the Kool Aid part was more on how opinions are at times so stifled in this board. As soon as someone says something that even slightly questions BB, the automatic answer by so many on this board is almost always something like "why should i listen to you, BB has over 30 years of coaching experience".

I believe this site was created as a discussion board for people with differing opinions but the same love for the Pats. We all want to find out more about the team. Just because there are times when people may want to probe further on the team and its strategy and perhaps even question certain things, doesn't mean that others should shut down that kind of discussion so often. No one is perfect in this world, I'm sure we can all acknowledge that. Why then do so many people here treat him as infallible? For most fans here, questioning a tactic or strategy of BB does not equate to them wanting another coach. Most all of us revere him as someone who has helped change the fortunes and image of the New England Patriots from losers to perennial contenders. Just because we think that however shouldn't make us all so beholden to the point where we can never question any of his decisions.

It's more of #7 and #9 that strike me as interesting. The injury bug has for years been more of a problem for the pats then other teams . . . On Marquise Hill
The injury thing, I think, it just bogus. Most of the injuries are non preventable. Torn ACLs. Broken bones. Sure there's the occasional Chad Jackson who has a variety of lesser issues but I'm not sure those are more than average.

Marquise Hill, he's probably running out of time. But you know Belichick is hesitant to let go of a big man with talent. Remember Hill was young when he was drafted plus he had (presumably has) bi-polar which possibly could make his development a little slower (maybe they have to be a little more careful with him mentally, I don't know). But if our biggest problem is Marquis Hill taking up a roster spot we're OK.

But the lunacy of trying to tell Belichick that his 2 gap philosophy doesn't work anymore (especially while we're #2 in scoring defense in the league) just makes me shake my head.

I welcome you to this board with a 1-star rating on that post.

To paraphrase:

Dear BB,

Please stop being BB.

Dear BB,

Thanks for the rings, I truly enjoyed watching all those SuperBowl victories from my couch. But its been a year since we won, so here's what you have to do......

Our defense under BB has always been, and will always be, a combination 3-4/4-3.

Our defense has been REALLY good this season.

The only way we change, or even should, is if the numbers become so bad that it forces us to.

Why are we worried about the D??????
