Well from early indications it appears Belichick has once again proven he can pick the right player from 2 players who were highly regarded and one of which was expected to protect Brady for several years.

Danny Watkins was projected by many to be a sure fire star on the OL but when Solder was chosen at #17 some thought it was the wrong choice and Watkins was the better player.

Now the Eagles who took Watkins in the early 1st round have benched him in favor of a scrub fresh off the waiver wire and coming from a decently run organization like the Eagles to bench a guy that was that highly heralded must mean he really stinks.

For a player to say he is 'overwhelmed' by the NFL level as a rookie tells me he is a bit confused and possibly can't handle the job or the playbook ect:.

I think Solder has shown flashes of being a good player for the near future....I wouldn't bet the same on Watkins.

Re: For those who thought BB should have chosen Danny Watkins instead of Nate Solder.

Because of his age people figured Watkins would be an NFL ready player quite early... Seems like the Dream Team might have OL problems.

Re: For those who thought BB should have chosen Danny Watkins instead of Nate Solder.

The Eagles have problems on the OL as it is, so him not being able to start is really an indictment of his current ability.

Let's not anoint Solder as anything special until we actually see him do something meaningful though.

They just picked up a guy (DeVan) who wasn't good enough to make the Colts OL and he's starting ahead of Watkins at guard, so yeah I'd say they have OL problems.

Maybe Andy Reid figures that Vick runs around so much that it doesn't matter if his OL is great.

I was one of many who considered Watkins a top target for pick #33, but I don't remember ANYONE suggesting he should have been the choice at #17. Even #23 where the Eagles took him (not the early 1st!) seemed pretty early.

That said, it's surprising that a guy whose big calling card was supposed to be "maturity and readiness" is struggling so badly.

Eagles bench Watkins for recent signee DeVan

Let's just ignore that DeVan had extensive time (31 games and 21 starts) playing for Mudd when Mudd was the OC for Indy. This was the driving force behind the decision for the Eagles to sign DeVan.

Now, about Watkins, its definitely not a good sign for him. Especially considering he's 26 and guard is a much easier position to learn than OT at the pro-level.

However, as Patchick said, most people were saying for the Pats to pick Watkins at 33, not 17.

Based off ESPN's Depth Chart or other news sources.

Tyron Smith - Cowboys - Starting RT
Mike Pouncey - Dolphins - Starting C
Nate Solder - Patriots - Swing Tackle
Anthony Costanzo - Colts - Starting LT
Danny Watkins - Eagles - Reserve Guard
James Carpenter - Seahawks - Starting RT
Gabe Carimi - Bears - Starting RT
Derek Sherrod - Packers - Reserve Guard/OT

I've not seen any of the others play, yet. Being that we'll see the Packers on Thursday, we'll see if Sherrod gets any time. We'll get a 1st hand look at Pouncey on Monday.

Sometimes you get the dog, sometimes the dog gets you........skipping on a chance on clay Matthews sounds more stupid by the moment......butler and brace instead...... It is genius I tell you

Judging by how often this is repeated, I've come to the conclusion that Clay Matthews is the only good player the Patriots have ever failed to draft, and that the Patriots were the only team not to draft him. Pretty amazing stat, that!

I generally agree with your point, but I'd take Jon Beason over Brandon Meriweather.

Oh, there are plenty I'm sure BB would like to do over! It's just weird to me how fixated people seem to be on Clay Matthews.

Kind of funny, too, that at the time opinions were wildly divided about which of half a dozen OLBs was the right choice, but now that Matthews is the ONLY one to have panned out, everybody knew all along he was a stud. :)

Re: For those who thought BB should have chosen Danny Watkins instead of Nate Solder.

Some draft picks hit, while obviously some do not.

I see no reason for some to keep harping about it, it's a game of chance.

I didn't care for Watkins as a spent 1st rounder all that much, and felt that it was already a decent gamble by taking someone who was 4-5 yrs older right off the bat.

Although it's early yet, so you cannot properly judge his talent for a while.

Actually I am more upset,at least back then, over the move up and trade for Chad Jackson who we seemed to have a hard on for instead of sitting Pat and grabbing Greg Jennings, but who knew?

Yeah, fan opinion was mixed on that at the time. So were psyched for Jackson, some were rightly skeptical. But it wasn't as bad as the time they wasted a 1st on a special teamer who wouldn't have a chance of cracking their CB lineup. Now THAT was a move fans knew for sure was a blunder. ;)

Re: For those who thought BB should have chosen Danny Watkins instead of Nate Solder.

I was not a fan. He's an older rookie at 26, with short arms. While I think he will eventually be successful, he wasn't on my radar.

Except that it wasn't Butler and Brace they drafted with the picks that they got from trading down.

I'm pretty sure that Patchick has mentioned the 4 players we got instead of Matthews.. Patchick, could you repeat those 4 again????
