Pats fans like to complain about Rex Ryan being a guy that loves to be in front of a camera, loves to bring attention to himself, is full of himself, and any other innuendo you can think off to mock the Jets head coach.

Being a Jets fan, and despite being obviously biased, I honestly don't know why so many fans hate Rex. Some take what he says and make it into a bigger deal than what it is, I've always been of the mindset that Rex has an MO with everything he does, and that he has taken one of the many great attributes that made Buddy Ryan a great coach, Rex also likes to create a bunker environment with his team, his "us against the world" mantra works IMO, he gets the most out of his players because he creates a culture that motivates a player to back up everything he says, but it's even more than that IMO, its Rex' genuine passion for the game, for winning, the man loves football, and his players will go through a wall for him. That is the biggest objective for any coach, after all, isn't it? The best coaches in the game are the coaches whose players buy into their program and what they are all about. You can hate Rex all you want, but you can't deny he gets the most out of his team, and there are a lot of good that Rex does for the league because of the "way" he is. I think deep down, some of you would even have to admit, despite having one of the very best coaches in the history of the game leading your team, that you could find yourself rooting hard for Rex and enjoying the culture he creates for his teams...

Which brings me to the point of this thread, not too far on that end of the spectrum is Chad Ochocinco, for all the whining you guys probably do about Rex, how is Ocho any different? Is he not a guy that loves to be in front of a camera? Is he not a diva? Is he not a player that at one point in time during his career violated every "what it means to be a Patriot" rule ever written, or still being written? This guy loves to talk, he's arrogant, if not over confident, he's pretty much everything Rex is as a player. I also believe he is a guy that wants to win, and quite frankly, I don't really have a problem with the "way" Ocho is, I've always found a lot of his "stuff" hilarious, some of it extreme, and I know he can wear on players and locker rooms, which is a risk in itself for the Pats, leopards don't change their colors, Ocho may be putting on a nice face, but the guy is ready to burst, in some ways, he has, and it can make a fan just shake his head in befuddlement. Again, I used to like Chad a lot, I don't think he is the same player he once was anymore, not by a long shot, he looks like a player who has slowed down quite a bit, and has been eliminated in big games in the last couple of years quite easily, irregardless of who was on the opposite side of the field.

My point is, how is Ocho different, for those that hate Rex, do you like Ocho, if so, why, what is the difference?

Waits for Joker to come into the thread......

I don't have a problem with Rex. He's a fine coach and doing his job in the saturated NY media making the Jets relevant by sprouting anything that will keep them in the headlines.

I've actually grown to like Sexy Rexy and I'm glad he's in our division but it's far different for a player to be the class clown than for the head coach.

Why, what is Joker going to do?

It's a serious question, I'm interested in Pats fans responses to the comparison, I think it makes for an interesting discussion.

Here are a couple differences:

* Ocho does not have an eating disorder.
* Ocho does not pimp his women out to strangers on alt/fetish websites.

I've actually grown to like Sexy Rexy and I'm glad he's in our division but it's far different for a player to be the class clown than for the head coach.

I don't get the "class clown" reference. Do you think his players would respect him the way they do if he was a "class clown" as you suggest?

I get it that he rubs off opposing fans the wrong way, the guy is confident, and he's pretty darn serious with everything he says, but he's genuine, and I think he doesn't care what people think. I think his players love that, and as a fan of the team, it sure is fun as hell to be a fan of the team with him as a head coach.

I find the fact that Belichick has so much respect for him, and despite what you interpret through his comments publicly, Rex has a great deal of respect for Belichick in return, it's very mutual, that in itself should make people wonder about some of the things he says...

I don't hate Rex. I think he's a good coach. I think some of the stuff he says, ala "soon to be champs", is pretty stupid, but that's it. I think you'd be hard-pressed to find someone here who wouldn't acknowledge that Ryan is a good coach.

As far as the difference between him and Ochocinco, there's something to be said for head coaches setting the culture of a team. WRs don't. For better or worse, Ryan has set a very unique culture for the Jets. Don't really care enough to debate whether that's a good thing or a bad thing.

That said, when the entire premise that you're starting a thread on is that we won't stop "whining" (your words) about Rex, I hope you don't expect to get such diplomatic responses from others. If you want to have a civilized debate, don't start it off with an insult.

Hmmm, ok, I was looking for an adult conversation on the subject, I guess kids need to play too...

That's fair.

To compare the two is silly. Rex Ryan is a joke because all he does is worry about what the Patriots are doing. All he knows how to do is talk smack about other teams, and talk about the Patriots. Chad Ochocinco NEVER talks bad about another player or anyone for that matter. 85 has a lighthearted approach to the game where everything is just about having fun. Rex Ryan is pretty much the opposite. The ONLY thing they have in common is that they like to be in front of the camera, I will give you that one...but THAT'S IT.

Of course he's the class clown. Predicting they'll win the SB every year, "let's get a f*cking snack", he's a clown. The players "respect" him because they like him and they're winning. But he's a clown and it will work just fine as long as they win. When they don't it will get ugly, not predicting that will come soon as I don't know.

That's where you're likely wrong...

The fact that Rex Ryan CONSISTENTLY goes out of his way to bring up topics regarding the Patriots (while in front of the camera), or put down the opposition (in front of the camera) proves his insecurities. He's insecure, therefor looking for approval from the media, fans, and his peers. He DOES care what people think. People that put on the act that they don't care what people think, usually DO. Rex Ryan is very insecure and he does care what people think, you would be naive to think otherwise, man.

Rex Ryan = puts down opposition, guarantees victories, serious in what he says, makes excuses when he loses, etc.

85 = lighthearted in everything he says, never puts down an opponent, gives props to opposing players ALL THE TIME

There are not many similarities at all...This thread is funny.

This...

Here's my opinion of Rex Ryan..I think he's a great football mind. He sure as hell knows what he's doing from a defensive scheme standpoint, and getting his players to play for him.

To be honest though, I would be EMBARRASSED if I were a Jets fan, or if he were coaching the team I root for. Every time he opens his mouth with his garbage, guaranteeing SB, etc is pathetic. And you know that his peers, NFL fans, and intelligent Jets fans are just rolling their eyes every time he speaks.

Insecure? LOL, I don't see it that way at all. I often think that way of Patriot fans, and probably more so Red Sox fans, but Rex, insecure? No way...

You're also wrong about Ocho, he went through a stretch during the peak of his career where he made his opposing CB the week of the game the butt of his jokes all week long, there was nothing "nice" about some of the things he was saying, but it was all in good fun or for gamesmanship purposes, I see a lot of similarities in this with Rex.

Embarrassed? No, there isn't a single Jets fan that would characterize Rex as embarrassing.

Let me ask you, were you embarrassed as a fan of Belichick through the whole videogate scandal?

Why is everyone waiting for Joker?

Is he some kind of messiah around here?

Here's a hint, I know Joker a lot better than MANY of you on this board, but it is funny how some of you circle the wagons like toy solders and bow to his message board prowess...

I thought the discussion topic was on point and a good topic for debate, considering both have "loud" personalities.

I don't hate Rex. I agree with you that he gets the most out of his players and he's had a lot of success in a short period of time. He's a good fit for NY/NJ. Not all fans have the same views. While I didn't and don't like the Chad trade, from a media stand point he's been fairly quiet.

I just find his anti Jets comments hilarious and he is our residential Jets basher.
I could care less of Rex Ryan. He is a good coach, great defensive coach but I can't stand his big mouth.
Know why people in the 80's and 90's hated the University of Miami? Because they were a bunch of thugs and trash talkers who acted like a bunch of idiots. But the difference between the Jets now and the U from back in the day is that they won National Titles.

Also, why is Rex Ryan so damn obsessed with the Pats? If he doesn't win the SB this year, will he just shut the **** up?

Joker is good people, I've known him since about 1997, we've met and have engaged on a number of fan related events. He used to hate the Dolphins a lot more than he does now the Jets, but I take that as a complement. Nothing will ever change the hilarity of the days we've had as we used to engage phin fans. Me personally, nothing will ever, ever trump my hatred of the phins and their fans. Joker went down hill with the whole Mangini era, sometimes I don't think he realizes that Mangini is no longer the Jets coach.

I don't think Ryan is at all obsessed with anything, if anything, you should take what he does say about the Pats as respect. The fact that Belichick and Ryan respect each other so much should tell you that.
