Saturday night after he made the team and before he didnt there was a poster on JI saying that Rex Ryan and Maybin were going to revolutionize the OLB position.
Perhaps they are working on a way to hit the QB from the waiver wire.

With that front 7, if Maybin had any ability to rush the passer (or play for that matter), then they would have retained him.

Do they have any depth at OLB? Or even ILB for that matter? Must be a big drop off after the ones.

Maybin's career is roughly in as good shape as Jeff Gillooly's so that may be exactly what they have in mind.

... unfortunately the rest of his game doesn't measure up to the same level ... and he doesn't project to solid special teams skills either ...

This ties in to one of my pet arguments. People say BB doesn't care about OLB's and decries BB for not drafting any the past few years. BB's largest two FA signings as Pats GM were both OLB's. The wretched drafting results on guys taken in the top 40 picks each year over the past 5 years at OLB (3-4 OLB's in college and 4-3 DE -> OLB conversions in the pros) gives BB ample reason why he has not.

Part of the changes in our personnel/style of D could be due to this frustration.

In any event I want to thank the Jets for walking headlong into this trap twice. Hats off...

That is a bunch of crap, no matter how many times you post it.

I was hoping the Jets retain him and give him a longer evaluation period, there is no question the kid has pass rushing ability and very good speed off the edge, it's the rest of his football acumen that is lacking, but at 23 years old, that can be developed when the ability and willingness is there, and I felt he had that. I didn't agree with the Jets giving him only a 2 week evaluation.

Joe Paterno must be surprised by how some of his LBs looked so good when playing for him only to fall flat on thier face when the NFL comes calling.

Poluzsny has not done much at this point either.

I do agree with that and if Haynesworth proves the same here then it would be similar.....both Maybin and Haynesworth are gambles to the highest degree in different ways.

Haynesworth has a boatload of talent but seems to lack enthusiasm in games and Maybin has enthusiasm from what I have seen but does not have NFL talent.

On what part of his zero sacks in two seasons resumé are you basing his supposed 'pass rushing ability'?

Maybin was a low risk and apparently low reward type of acquistion. I don't think it was a mistake for the Jets to bring him in and get a shot.

The guy is fast, but he had a slow first step in Buffalo, is limited in his moves, and is too light. He just isn't an OLB at this level.

I wouldn't mind if the Pats added him to the practice squad and try to convert him to a safety. Otherwise, he isn't going to make it at this level.

Signing Maybin wasn't a mistake by the Jets. He was one spot out of 70- they get him a chance to prove himself, and, like the Bills, they concluded that he wasn't good enough. They're no worse off nw than they would be if they hadn't brought him in in the first place.

has anyone else pointed out this is a reason not to pick players like maybin and clay mathews. players who suddenly change their body type come draft time. Mathews has turned into a superstar, maybin has gone back to what he was.
