This is way OT (out there), but has an NFL team ever forfeited for refusing to take the field? With the way the Raiders are playing and talking, it wouldn't surprise me if some players stopped showing up for the last few weeks. What happens if they can't get 11 to put on the field?

I don't know about any other refusal in the NFL except for Buffalo refusing to come back onto the field for a PAT attempt after NE scored a game winning TD with no time left aided by a questionable PI call.

Hey, dont they play the Jets on the final Sunday? We may need them to, at least, show up.
Maybe they'll field the Oakland High School varsity team instead, give the Jets a challenge.

Interesting, was there a fine or anything from the NFL?

What about the time where the "field" at Philadelphia's Veteran Stadium was so bad that the team they were playing refused to play on it after warming up on it and seeing how terrible it was. I believe the game was cancelled.

pre-season

The Patriots forfitted the last preseason game in 1975. They went on strike, the only team in the league to do so. They almost struck the first game but was talked out it at the last minute. Ruined the season they when 3-11 after a good 1974 season but made up for it the fallowing season(1976) though.

Players are paid per game, so if they didn't play they wouldn't get their check. Now imagine what these checks are actully for, each check is 1/16th of thier salary. So if you make 2 million a year, Each game check is @$135,000, I don't know about you, but I don't care how much my team sucks, I'm going out on that field.

And I thought you were a man of principle. :cool3:

I wasn't aware that when a defender doesn't look at the ball and blatantly pushes the wide receiver a half second before the ball gets there it's questionable PI?

What was questionable (or not) was that the Pats drive should have ended because Shawn Jefferson made a catch on fourth down when he was clearly out of bounds. So the hail Mary should never have happened.

But what Buffalo revisionists will fail to remember, is that on the drive that put them in the lead, they had three seperate penalties on third downs that continued the drive. Of the three, only one was legit.

So when I say that Patriots drive should have ended, I also believe Buffalo should have never had the lead.

And the PI was obvious, Hail Mary or not.

In the song "American Pie", the halftime marching band refused to leave the field. Can't document that game at NFL.com, however.

Good point.

Interesting thread topic! My question would be: what conditions would make the NFL agree with a team refusing the take the field? Someone said poor field conditions got a game cancelled. I wonder what else they'd allow?

That is the first thing I thought of, when I read this post..

Now the half-time air was sweet perfume
While the sergeants played a marching tune.
We all got up to dance,
Oh, but we never got the chance!
`cause the players tried to take the field;
The marching band refused to yield.
Do you recall what was revealed
The day the music died?
