I guess Rex was right.

Bears give up on Gholston
Posted by Mike Florio on August 29, 2011, 1:21 PM EDT

Defensive end Vernon Gholston, the sixth overall pick in the 2008 draft, got three years to prove himself in New York. He failed.

Gholston got roughly three weeks to prove himself in Chicago.

He failed.

The Bears have announced that Gholston has been waived. If/when he clears waivers, he’ll become a free agent.

The Bears also have waived center J.C. Brignone, defensive tackle Tank Tyler, and quarterback Trevor Vittatoe.

It remains to be seen whether anyone else gives Gholston a chance. Eith
er way, he’ll go down as one of the all-time great draft busts, a workout warrior who parlayed a chiseled physique and a dominating performance against Michigan’s Jake Long into the kind of oversized contract that top-10 draft picks no longer will get.

Sign the beast .. :bricks:

The Jets should re-sign him, if anyone can turn him into an all pro Ryan can. he and Maybin would be fearsome.

I am sure it was Rapoport who said that Jets should resign him, and make a new reality program involving him and Maybin on who gets the first sack!

I'm thinking the Pats could sign him, maybe BB and Scar could make a guard out of him.:)

Vernon Gholston has the size and physical talent to become the first player to ever enter the Hall of Fame as a long snapper.

I just wish some team would give this guy a fair chance, rather than giving him all of these unfair chances.

Can he rush the passer?

Ok can he rush the passer and get there before the end of the game?

Guy has no instincts, but yea he can get to where the QB was, just not to where he is.

If this kid could of played up to his draft position the Jets D would of been scary. Not that Jet D is not top 5 as it is.

Might I ask how you were banned at Gang Green? You never come off as a malcontent.

As a guard, hat wold be his best bet to get a sack...too bad it'd be against his own team :p

Because he isn't delusional like the others, and they don't like the 'normal' sort! Well as normal as a Jest fan can be!

I don't know and it has always bothered me because it was the first message board I ever joined.

My guess is that I did not post enough and about 6 years ago they purged there system of folks that were inactive?

If I had Gholston on my team, I would make him a DT in sub packages in obvious passing situations. 3rd and long, 2nd and real long, 2 minute drill, and when ahead and the other team has to throw.
He does have some level of skill and he could get some inside push against Gs.
Trouble is most teams look at a guy like him, and try to define his position within their base, rather than realizing you have a guy who may be a decent addition for about 150 snaps a season.
Could be wrong, but thats what I would try. Don't think I'd go out of my way to acquire him to try it though.

He was the "name". Mayo was the "semi no-name". Glad we chose the right one. Holy.

Vern Gholston - 0 career sacks, sacked twice in his career

I don't think that even those of us who thought he'd be a bust thought he'd be this bad.

If I had Vernon Gholston on my team I would purge my front office.

I'm a Buckeye fan and I even laugh at him. He was an odd character off the field at Ohio State. Rarely hung out with fellow football players.
