I'd like to just how good the "league source" is?

Re: Bedard: Haynesworth,Ellis,Tate,Dowling,Vereen DOUBTFUL against Lions

Interesting, Bedard and Reiss have a markedly different outlook on the likelihood of several players appearing in the game against the Lions. I guess we'll find out Saturday which is more reliable: Bedard's league source, or Reiss' logic based on who did or did not practice this week.

Those unlikely to play vs. Lions - New England Patriots Blog - ESPN Boston

Reiss lists Haynesworth, Ellis, Dowling and Vereen in the 'reasonable chance' based on practices, while Bedard lists each of them as doubtful per his source.

On the other hand Reiss lists Bodden, Cunningham, and several others as unlikely to play but Bedard does not mention them. Interestingly Reiss has Vereen and Woodhead as 'reasonable chance' and Ridley as 'highly unlikely', which presumably means BJGE will be the primary RB, and Morris and Medlin should get plenty of snpas too.

Well, Bedard does subscribe to the theory that Belichick is going to pull a Moss on Haynesworth and hide him until the start of the season.

I gotta think Cunningham will not play because I can't remember him practicing this week, but I could be wrong.

The obsession with Haynesworth continues, nothing matters until week 1.. these guys were not signed for our preseason entertainment.

I don't really care if Haynesworth plays, but I definitely want to see Vereen and Dowling

I guess my 1st question would be for Bedard: Do you actually cover the Pats? To me thats embarrassing that a beat reporter has no clue whats going on with the team and he is quoting from league sources like who 'the bleacher report". The same goes for Chris Gasper I know BB runs a tight ship but this is ridiculous.

Of all the guys it's Tate who most needs to play and show that he can contribute. Serious bubble for Tate unless Price lays an egg.

If BB doesnt play Haynesworth tonight, then I definitely think he's saving him for Miami.

The media still makes tons of money off of the NFL preseason.

Not denying it, but the underlying theme that BB erred on Haynesworth all the while he has not played a down is overblown, it makes great discussion for the sports yakkers .. all I care about is what happens week 1 to week 19 or is it week 20.

Bedard apparently knows someone in the league, while Reiss knows a number of people on or about the specific team.

I'm guessing if you used Reiss as your source, you'd know quite a bit more than any league source, whatever that means.

In fairness, just because Reiss believes there is a reasonable chance of a player playing doesn't mean they aren't already ruled out. I think Reiss is speculating.

I think jmt nailed it when he said:

Reiss is just making a calculated assumption.

I am dying to see them play too but I would rather have them get back to 100% than having nagging injuries the whole season.

Kid Vereen (http://www.jrinla.com/movie-reviews/cat-ballou/kid-shelleen1.jpg) has a hammy...right? Parcells hated it when guys got hammies...blaming it on improper warmups by the player but in this day and age I have to assume that the staff would not let these guys practice until fully warmed up and stretched.

Nor does Beddards speculation mean they are out.

I have it from a reliable source =

I GOT NOTHIN JERRY ......

It isn't speculation if Bedard has a source. Doesn't mean he's automatically right, but it isn't speculation if Bedard just reports what one of sources told him.

In any case, I think Reiss was way too optimisitic when he suggested some of these guys might play this week. They've only practiced for a few days after missing weeks of training camp. Knowing Belichick, it's more likely he'll let them sit another week than risk having them play unprepared.

I don't know if it mirrors the rest of the league, but it seems the Patriots every pre season have a bunch of guys whom "everyone" wants to see play, and they never play a down in practice games and often end up on IR....or cut in the case of veterans

Dowling and Vereen didn't travel with the team. Safe to say they're not playing.
