Patriots 53 Man Roster Projection 2.0
By: Steve Balestrieri

The New England Patriots have two pre-season games under their belts and while we must remind everyone that its only pre-season games, they’ve looked pretty impressive so far. A blow-out win over the woeful Jaguars was followed by another blowout over a much better Buccaneers team.

So with that in mind we bring you our Patriots 53 man roster projection 2.0. While there are still two pre-season games to go, but based on what we’ve seen to date, this is the team we’d field if the season started today....

I thought it was established that Mills still has PS eligibility because he hasn't been active enough games..... If that's the case, I think he gets sent to the PS as insurance for Hernandez. This time, without Chillly to be a DBag, he'll clear waivers....

Don't disagree with much of the rest, except I have a feeling Ihedigbo makes this team. Don't know if it's Sanders place he takes, but I just think he will. He is a real ST thumper.

Also, I think this is the end for Sammy. He'll be released and on the shadow roster if one of the other RB's goes down.

Did I read correctly?

Vereen practiced yesterday?

No reason to cut/IR Brace. He can go on regular season PUP for at least the first 6 weeks. Other than that, I agree for the most part. The only non-radical (not trading Welker) difference I have is Ihedigbo over Eric Moore.

You have Tate cut because he's not practiced. I read he's returned to the field along with Price so no advantage there. That said I agree that for KO de-emphasis and WR performance reasons Tate gets cut.

Are Spikes and Vareen back?

Ohrnberger and PS player as the backup OG/C's is pretty thin. Does Belichick really trust Ohrnberger as the priomary interior line backup?

Does it really matter? At 2 of 3 interior line spots, the team lacks NFL-caliber starters. Once again we'll be seeing TE's and backs bailing out the interior line against strong pass-rushing teams.

Which 2? Your suggestion being Koppen isn't an NFL caliber starter?

After listening to BB yesterday, he sounds none to pleased about phasing out this part of the game.. there will be few returns, but guys running up and down the field running into each other with full force.. there will still be injuries, usually for nothing.. it is an idiotic rule change.

I agree with his projections completely and only wonder about PUP for Brace and Wright. I also think Morris may well be gone and they go with 4 RB with Faulk on PUP, they can always bring in a FA RB whenever they need to. I doubt mills makes the team and think they are just kicking the tires in case they want to bring him back later. Koutivides may also beat out White with a good performance the next 2 weeks.

I thought Wright saw the field early on so if that's true, he cannot be PUPed.

As you indicate there is still plenty of time for the last 6-8 contending players to win or lose a roster spot. The only thing surprising would be if we're not surprised by a couple of the results.

I'm sure there will be some surprises as i am never right about the final 53, i just thought his take was abaout as close to mine as i have seen so far. This is the most difficult cutdown i have ever seen with this team, good players are going to be released and he will have to release picks he made, especially on the DL to make room for the veteran FA's he brought in, which is tough but necessary when they are clearly going for it this year. On the other hand it's not like guys like Deadrick and Richard can't be replaced by draftees next year, they definitely can, especially if he goes DL early in that draft.

Overall this is one of the best offseasons i have ever seen them have, they played the draft and free agency perfectly in my opinion. teams were going for defense in the draft and he went offense, getting high quality talent without having to use more picks to move up, and in free agency he was able to bring in a slew of quality DL at bargain prices and risked very little while upgrading the defensive line significantly. they really don't have any needs at this point from what i can tell and their final 53 should be as strong as any they have ever entered a season with.

I wondered about that, and if you are right then it is a problem, they will have to determine whether or not he can hold up with his concussion problems and cutting him would be a tough move to make.

Are Wright and Love the leading candidates for backing up Wilfork and Haynesworth in the 4-3? Is Warren ahead of both of them? Personally I like the idea of Wright in the 4-3, he always seems to be disrupting the O-line whenever he gets a chance to rush.

Though Warren is older, I'm pretty sure he had a 10 sack season in Oakland? Did he play the 4-3 DT there, anyone?

I feel like I'm forgetting someone.

I'm in the camp that truly believes Spikes is on the outs. I'm certainly not one to make a habit of relying on twitter but took a long based on some of the threads around here- he certainly does not seem pleased with his current situation and all indications point to the fact that he has been told to stay away from the team.

I'm in a Cassandra mood today and fear you may be right. I don't read any blogs but hopefully Reiss et. al. have picked up on this development and can at the very least let us know if he's even AT Gillette. Anybody?

I think spikes will be here for another year anyway......he is cheap and he's pretty solid out there......he is exactly someone the jets really need......cutting him would come back to haunt the pats.

Morris is very good on ST's and is decent at blitz pick-up (Brady's torn knee aside...lol) ....do you trust Riddley or Vareen with protecting Brady? Nope? Me either. BJGE is getting better at it and for the life of me, I do not know about Woodhead's skills sets in that area but I would imagine they leave a bit to be desired. The best at picking up the blitz is Faulk.

They keep BJGE, Vareen, Riddley, Morris and Faulk starts the season on PUP. I'm pretty sure that once Faulk is off of Pup, Morris will be on it....so it's all good. LOL!

I feel the same way!

Although you should never rely on Twitter, I find it perplexing that he is the only Pats player on Twitter who does not introduce himself as a Patriot. His profile pics are usually of him in Florida gear and his background is of him playing cards.

Personally, I think he's slow, immature and a bit of an arse. I'm not sure he's needed except for depth. Highly over-rated by homers. I say buh-bye.
