Charley Casserly, on the NFL Today, reports the Patriots were warned by the NFL earlier in the season after they dressed somebody in coaches' attire on the sidelines and had him tape the opposing QB's signals. Casserly said that is against the rules, but acquiring the special network audio is not.

I just caught that too on CBS. That's pretty damn funny.

He also mentioned how some team (he didn't say) had a D-Lineman wear a microphone to tape the Qbs audibles.

Yea as long as they pay for it its legal.
Leave it the nfl anyway, to make a buck

Re: Casserly: Pats attempted to tape QB signals

Well this might explain their "well we don't care, its not big deal" attitude when the pats were asked about Miami stealing signals

Re: Casserly: Pats attempted to tape QB signals

Why does this guy continue to run his mouth off?

Re: Casserly: Pats attempted to tape QB signals

Why does this guy continue to run his mouth off?
Because CBS pays him - which is more than any team with any sense would do after his tenure with the Texans was shown to be such stunning success! :D

The guy has a rep for being instrumental in the Gibbs' Dynasty of years past, but I'd say he defines the Peter Principal.

Re: Casserly: Pats attempted to tape QB signals

Dale Arnold reports Stacey James issued a statement saying this report was false and the incident never occurred.

BB responded today on these casserly comments

Asked about those remarks today, Belichick said the Patriots "haven't heard anything from the league." When asked if teams were allowed to have cameras on the sideline, Belichick responded by saying "why don't you go talk to Charley Casserly, he seems to have all the answers on everything."

Re: Casserly: Pats attempted to tape QB signals

you just know they dressed the decoy in a gray hoodie...now THAT is funny.

Re: Casserly: Pats attempted to tape QB signals

No I think he was dressed as a security guard...

Re: Casserly: Pats attempted to tape QB signals

Casserly used to have some credibility, but now has joined the rest of the crew who want ratings, integrity is not important... it is all about ratings and entertainment. Glad Stacy James and BB responded as readily as they did.

Ha! I knew I'd find this some day. The search archive omits most of December 06 because of a technical problem, but I searched this down.

A few excerpts from contemporary Reiss posts:

Bill's follow-up

FOXBOROUGH -- Bill Belichick held his Monday press conference (2:45 p.m.) and was asked about comments made by Charley Casserly on Sunday's CBS pre-game show.

The topic of discussion on the show was intelligence gathering in the NFL, and Casserly was talking about how the Dolphins studied audio tapes of Tom Brady's calls at the line of scrimmage in the days leading up to their 21-0 win on Dec. 10.

According to a transcript provided by CBS, Casserly said it wasn't an illegal move by the Dolphins, before adding the following: "The Patriots got caught doing something early in the year they weren't supposed to be doing. They had a man on their sideline dressed in coaching attire with a video camera who was presumably videotaping the other team's signals. You can't do that. They were warned. If it happens again, they're going to be disciplined."

Asked about those remarks today, Belichick said the Patriots "haven't heard anything from the league." When asked if teams were allowed to have cameras on the sideline, Belichick responded by saying "why don't you go talk to Charley Casserly, he seems to have all the answers on everything."

Bill's take

FOXBOROUGH -- Patriots coach Bill Belichick held his Wednesday press conference and noted the team is searching for a new punter after placing Ken Walter on injured reserve Tuesday.

...

"Again, that's one of those things that I don't have any control over -- do you want replay, do you not want replay? Pass interefernce at the point, or a 15-yard penalty? I would say go talk to the genuises who make the rules, because they are the ones who make it and they have all the answers. ... There are plenty of people on that committee and they love to talk about the rules they made and how great they are and all that. The Charley Casserly's of the world, who have all the answers to everything. Talk to them."

Re: Casserly: Pats attempted to tape QB signals

The way this is going, we're about 2 days away from having the Pats accused of masterminding 9-11 and shooting both Kennedys.

Who have you been talking to....I mean...I mean.....uh....Funny! Yeah, funny. To think the Patriots were involved in those events...ha....ha.....ha....you must be silenced. :)

Re: Casserly: Pats attempted to tape QB signals

If the NYDaily news is to be believed, it was Mangini who was already ratting out the Pats back then., probably to Casserly, or to the competition committee who told Casserly. Mean while, Mangini was stealing Patriot signals to beat them in week 10, and selling them to Miami later in the season (my own theory in a thread called "PsyOps" last season).
