Maroney has torn rib cartilage

FOXBORO - Patriots [team stats] running back Laurence Maroney [stats] has torn cartilage in his rib cage, leaving his status for tomorrow’s game against the Texans in doubt.

According to a source close to Maroney, the rookie wanted to play last week but wasn’t cleared by the training staff. He’s officially listed as questionable with a back injury, meaning he has a 50-50 chance of playing. He missed a portion of practice yesterday.

Maroney has expressed frustration at the varying accounts of his injury and yesterday he basically shot them all down.

“I don’t have broken ribs, I don’t have a concussion and I don’t have a back problem,” he said. “And I definitely didn’t have the wind knocked out of me.”

Maroney was injured in the first quarter of a 28-21 victory over the Lions when he was tackled by safety Terrence Holt after a short run. The jarring helmet-to-helmet hit, with Maroney twisting sideways, left him wincing as he left the field, and he appeared to be trying to catch his breath.

If Maroney misses his second straight game, veteran Corey Dillon [stats] will once again be asked to carry the load, as he did last week in a 21-0 loss to the Dolphins

...

(This is buried deep in the 'Maroney says' thread too)

Crap. Can you play with something like that? It sounds pretty painful and I can see where the coaching staff would want to be careful. What bad luck we are having this year. Could he wear some kind of protective vest?

Let him rest and recover this week

didnt someone on Jets have that couple years back or something? Actually a while back '98 i think?

Woo hoo, finally something I can speak to from experience.

I tore some rib cartilage in a pickup game, and can tell ya, from the POV of a mere mortal, I couldn't have done anything near playing again for at least a month. Now here are the differences - I was 30, Maroney is 22; Maroney is an athlete, I am a slob; and who knows how much tear I had vs. what he has.

Anyway it hurts like a summa*****. Yeah rest him.

McGahee played with busted ribs. I say sit him tomorrow and bring him back next week to get ready for a playoff run. I'd like to see him more of a receiving rb for the next couple weeks then give him more carries.

Agreed. We dont need him tomorrow, IMO. Dillon can carry the load with Faulk at his side.

We need to blow the Texans off the field with a concerted passing game, anyway...using Faulk as a slot receiver and Dillon inside.

I don't know how they are going to have good passing game. They'll probably have a functional one. I will be shocked if either Watson or Jackson plays, which leaves Gaffney, Brown, and Reche. I'm in agreement to put Faulk in the slot.

I will curious to see the matchup of Light versus Mario Williams.

Dave Thomas needs to at least give a couple fo receptions if Watson does not play.

I expect the offense to be like pulling teeth with sporadic rythm.

if Jackson cant go..here comes Bam and Kight

btw Kazcur will also have a piece of Mario because he plays both sides

I hope Bam does play, but wouldn't they activate him to the team from the practice squad today?

And on both tackles, it will be a good test, they both played subpar last week

Agree. We don't need him to get into the playoffs, and there isn't any way we are getting a bye no matter how well he runs. Rest him up and have him fully recovered for the playoffs.

We should do fine with the running game. We have Dillon, Faulk and Evans to carry the ball, and Patrick "Pitch-the-Pigskin" Pass is safely on IR.

I remember a couple years back when Travis Henry was on the Bills that he had this injury (not sure of the degree of each), but I know it kept Travis out for a bit of time.

As long as we make the playoffs, we're probably the #4 seed anyway so it's not a big deal to me. This will be 2 weeks since it happened, by the first playoff game it'll be 5 - now it's a big deal that he's better by then.

Re-reading, if Maroney wanted to play last week, he must not be feeling too bad . . .

He's a 22 year old male athelete suffering from severe testosterone poisoning.
Let the docs and BB make the call, not the kid.

I agree completely. All I meant was that if it hurt so much that he could barely get out of bed, he wouldn't have been trying to get on the field. It's a good indication that it's not THAT bad.

I don't blame Tomase at all - he's just doing his job, and doing it well - but how the F did Maroney's condition get out? It would be much better for that injury not to be disclosed. Unusual in N.E. If it's from an official source, my guess is he won't be playing anyway. Or that it's a lie.

Good point. Don't want to have opposing DL/LB hitting him high. Make him tentative and his effectiveness is lessened.

I know reporters live to report things no one else knows, but what is the point of telling this to the world? Other than garnering some envy points from other reporters, I mean.

They always talk about a right to know, and they have a right to expose, but when they do, you have to look at them as people who are deliberately doing something detrimental to the team. Just because it is their job doesn't make it right.

Tomase is not an employee of the NE Patriots. It is not his concern whether something is or is not detrimental to the team. As an employee of the Boston Herald, his responsibility is to help sell newspapers. Tomase is consistently out in front on type of stories that the Pats franchise tries to quash, and reporting like this helps make the Herald sports section must-read for many people.

Heck -- it got the Herald website a bunch of hits from this website, didn't it?

That's right, he's not the PR guy for them. He was right on the Bruschi injury so until he's proven to be wrong, I'm assuming he's right.
