Just wanted to give a heads up in appreciation of a guy who looks like a special player. Everything I saw pre-draft shone through tonight. Heavy, heavy hands, a good compliment of counter moves, highly stout against the run. Watt looked very special against the Jets' one's tonight.

....and yeah, Barwin stood out as well. Damn Texans taking perfect Patriots!!!

I guess will never know if BB would have taken him if he had the chance, but i doubt it. Watt was my main binky and i would have loved to draft him.

Ah, Justin "Dynomite" Watt!! :D

Nate "Universal" Solder will surely ease the pain, over the next many years...

But, MAN, wouldn't it have been AWESOME to get that guy!! :rocker:

Re: OT: Watt Looked Unreal Tonight

Brook Reed didn't look too shabby. Unlike Watt who was long gone before the Pats picked, Reed was available in the second round. Looks like Clay Matthews 2. Interesting to compare him to Ras-I Dowling and Vereen.

I was going to post this actually. Texans are a good case for our draft board as they seem to have alot of players people on this board wanted BB to take. Barwin, Watt, Other outside LB with long hair.

Should be interesting to see how they go

Re: OT: Watt Looked Unreal Tonight

blame Oakland for having a better season than Houston. he could have been ours!

Yeah Oakland chose a lousy time to become mediocre rather than lousy! Oh well, that's how the cookie crumbles. Though in a reversal of fortune we did end up with the #1 pick of the 2nd round due to Carolina being even worse than expected. Imagine if that had been their 1st round pick instead? I wonder who the Pats would have taken, it certainly wouldn't have been a QB.

Loved Watt as a prospect leading up to the draft. He was the guy I wanted in the 1st round. I"m not surprised that he has showed flashes of brilliance in the preseason already.

Obviously it's impossible to say absolutely, but I like to think I understand what they're looking for at least conceptually. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if Watt was in their top five. Multitasker. Psychotic work ethic. Completely brainwashed into the football mentality. I thought he was the best 34 prospect within striking range since Seymour (neglecting Suh, as Suh was clearly going 2 and is the best talent since White), and so far he looks every bit the part. Houston's going to be legit very soon.

Re: OT: Watt Looked Unreal Tonight

Based on how Houston's defense has been the last few years, if these guys are remotely close to their expectations that team could easily replace the Colts as the annual playoff team from the AFCS. They have a good offense but their defense has been abysmal.

Re: OT: Watt Looked Unreal Tonight

And Bam Childress looked like our new #1 receiver a few preseasons ago

Some of you really need perspective on grading a player as special after 1 game....albeit a preseason game at that.

Let's see what Watt does in September and onward before we rip Bill for passing on him.

This kid was one of my projections to be a bust in the early draft and I still stick to that.

Reread the OP.

Nobody's hating on Coach Bill.

And Brother Jay provided us all with an exquisite BreakDown of Watt's game, back before the Draft. Forgive me for pointing it out, but it carried a LOT more weight than your flaming.

and how many players we wanted here looked great in an early preseason game on another team and then little afterwards?.....more than you might think

If Watt continues like he did tonight then we might have missed out....then again maybe BB knew what he was doing when he decided Watt was not worth a move to get him.

Not every player we were expecting to get drafted here and pass on early will turn out like Clay Matthews.

Precisely. Not every will become a heinously overhyped piss-poor scheme fit.

...and I know I'm going to sound like a jerk by saying this but I don't think you have a leg to stand on as an evaluator of talent. Anyone can provide a cursory comparison that makes no sense and try to provide an argument. In full candor, the fact that you cited Clay Matthews actually devalues your argument. There is a lot of complexity, strategy, and beauty in football. I invite you to look at the players games and cross reference that with schematic requirement. Football is given too much credit for it's complexity while in reality it is quite simple. Check out the patscast podcast, gain the tools needed for an evaluation before making one. I'm all for a differing take, I'd just want some depth to the argument.

You must be one of those fans who think the only good players are the ones who the patriots draft. You know belichick is the only one who knows football.

He knows more football than most of the other coaches in the league....it's been proven time and time again, sure sometime he drafts guys like Chad Jackson that don't work out but for every bum we draft there are 2 or more great picks we add on to the team.

The only coach I would say was better at the all around skills of football and how to form the pieces of a championship team was Bill Walsh.

Should we start erecting his statue in Canton? (Watt, that is. We all know BB is a slam dunk HOF)

I liked the kid and the texans...i hope he does well.

I don't get the move of Mario Williams to linebacker...he wasn't all that spectacular last night. Williams looks like he has the size(has the frame to add even more) to play DE in a 3 man front.
