I am soooo sick of the off-season Sox talk. I like and support the Sox because they are the hometown team but, really....this foolish fanfare over Dice-K, or whatever they are calling him, is making me ill. It is FOOTBALL season!!! I realize the Pats have come a LONG way in their footbal NE fanbase but it still bothers me. I understand the whole Sox history VS the Pats shorter history here and all that but really........Does anyone else get annoyed the way I do? I hope I'm reading this the wrong way.......I hope the region appreciates the Pats but sometimes I wonder. I apologize if this rant is repetitive. This topic has been bugging me since the dramatized "Winter Talks" began. I feel like I'm the only one who is sick of the Sox!!!

No, many of us feel as you do. But you have to stop reading the Globe, and listening to their whole journalistic tree. There's a HUGE conflict of interest there, and almost zero journalistic integrity left (with a few exceptions, so dont take offense Chris!).

I'm sure our perception is guided by the fact that the Globe and NESN and the Herald?? are all owned together? The Pats aren't lumped in there and really that does not give them the lime-light that even the Bruins and Celts get. It is very confusing how the Boston media works to me.........I am a transplant from Texas and have ALWAYS loved the Pats. (The whole 'Red, White and Blue thing got me as well as my father's devotion to the Pats.) Are you saying that there are many more rabid Pats fans out there and the media skews how we view our NE teams?

Yes. 10 spaces

Show some love to the hometown team. Don't have to hate. ;)

Many, many of us on here are diehard fans of both teams, and there's nothing wrong with that. Each team has their periods of excitement and depression.

(And the day Maroney was drafted, don't tell me the Sox game that day was first on the news, either)

What Red Sox?

Will you complain in the summer pre training camp when the media is almost 24/7 Patriots talk... get a clue. The media beats to death whatever story they get like Patriots training camp during baseball season and it was 24/7 Deion Branch.

Pardon me if this is skewing this OT, but this is my first adventure into the realms of Boston sports, so I have to ask a question.

Jeff Bagwell, a hero here in Houston, announced his retirement today. As I'm sure you all know, we got him for *cough* Larry Andersen in 1990 or '91 I believe, and he was from the Boston area and dreamed of playing for the Red Sox. Is this something that Sox fans kicked themselves over for a long time or was it not really that big of a deal since y'all had Mo Vaughn for a lot of that time?

I think this is relevant since Houston's home town hero, Vince Young, just single-handedly won a game against us last week. I'm wondering if this is something we'll be dreading for the next 10 years as well.

Well, this response should put this in the correct forum. It wasn't that we kicked ourselves over it, as the Red Sox continuoulsy gave fans something to rant about. Bagwell's name was always one of many that came up at trading deadline. Heck, I remember the Sox traded Cecil Cooper for George Scott. Clearly, the Texans could have done better with either Young, Bush, Leinart, or Cutler. Don't worry tho, you'll have another shot at it in this year's draft.

Speaking as someone who lived in Galveston for 7 years (Aug.'95 - June '02), I can tell you that the Bagwell trade is lamented as one of the worst ever in the history of the franchise, joining such giveaways as: Ruth, Earl Wilson, Ramirez/Sanchez, Sparky Lyle, etc. Bagwell could have played left field while Vaughn played first base.

Regarding your second paragraph, I would be more concerned about passing on Reggie Bush than on Vince Young. I would have chosen Matt Leinart if I were Tennessee; a qb with a Wonderlic of 6 will eventually be exposed as nothing more than another ath-a-lete playing out of position.

I'm with you 1,000 percent. On WEEI tonight, Mike Adams was on with some guy from Japan asking if they'd translated the words to "Sweet Caroline." Pure garbage. I'm not a fan of the Desperate Housewives (Boston's baseball team), but have been a Patriots season ticket holder since 1994. I get so sick of the baseball obsession I just turn the channel.

I'm not being a "hater" (Pats1)....if you read my first post you'd see that I said I support the hometown Sox! I am sick of the media carnival that revolves around every little whisper the Sox make. There's no way you're telling me that the Pats moves make as much noise around here as the Sox ones do. This whole Dice-K thing was way over-blown. I guess that is how it works here and I'll get used to it and move on. Thank god for sites like this and others though!

It's tough to 'overblow' a $103,111,111 transaction.

It's good for the 'EEI hosts to keep to baseball though. Mustard and Johnson started to complain this morning about how the Pats haven't played "exciting football" and I just turned it off.

Negativity sells newspapers and garner ratings for the talk shows. That is why you see and hear way too much of Borges. That is why you see so much Red Sox talk as they are a thrill a minute with all kinds of mostly negative fodder for the reader and listener.

The reason you heard so much Deion talk was because it was a way to stir everyone up with a negative story. Finally, they found a chink in the Patriot armor and exploited the heck out of it.

I enjoy all New England teams (I watched UMASS last night - nice effort) but Patriots are by far my #1 passion. I do feel the coverage is lacking for patriots - especially in view of their success this decade and the time of year.

I love the Pats. They are my favorite team.

That being said the Dice-K signing was big news considering the money invested (103M) and what it means for the team. Schilling is getting long in the tooth and Beckett wasn't exactly lights out the second half of the year. So a new baseball ace was needed to have a chance to beat the Evil Empire.

Anyways now that Dice-K is all signed up I expect that talk to dissipate and we can return to ruminating about how embarrassing a loss to the Texans would look this weekend!!

Be careful what you wish for. By contrast, would you like ZERO football talk during the spring/summer? I like the Sox and Pats and love offseason news/talk on both.

OK, I'm done with EEI today.

Larry Johnson: "I think the Pats should just intentionally lose in the playoffs because they're not going to win anyway...the Miami loss last week was the worst in the BB era...every time I sit down to watch this team I expect them to beat the snot out of their opponents but that hasn't been happening this year...I don't know what's wrong."

(Heh. Sounds like the manic-depressives on this board.)

I hate the Red Sox! It's the sneaky way they go about things...Lyndon Byers said on his radio show that Dice K rented a condo in Downtown Boston, 3 weeks ago. Yet they're telling everyone that he signed his contract on Thursday. Same with Lugo, he signed his contract a month ago. Why wait a month to announce it? It's all staged. It's a friggin joke.

I'm thinking of starting an anti-Red Sox club. It's because of girly-man shenanigans like these and all the drama queen crap down through the years (Pedro, Millar, Manny, Theo, etc.) that I have dubbed them the Desperate Housewives. They have no class, no integrity, and do not deserve the hype they get. But my biggest gripe of all is how they suck up the airwaves during football season. I could care less if Babe Ruth's ghost comes back or Fenway implodes. 'EEI could be talking about another potential Super Bowl run with the Patriots, but instead we get goofball Mike Adams trying to get "Sweet Caroline" translated to Japanese. I almost barfed but switched stations in the nick of time.
